Why Mori? The dude is 81 years old. The geezers in this country just don't want to give up an inch..

Why Coates?

"Coates has been virtually a fixture at the Summer Olympics for more than 30 years," (Wikipedia)

He has been in sports administration since the 70's. The sort of person that the Olympics ask when they want to know what to do. Sorry to be pedantic.

Japan would never admit they lacked understanding :(

I love how in Japan you can get people with no connection to something, but they put themselves forward or are promoted by somebody else to become a leader. It seems that this is what is going on here with the Olympics. Hey, you placed 12th in ski jumping in the Sapporo Olympics, you can become the chairman of the fencing committee!

Of course, if they used people who were actually INTERESTED in sports to begin with, this wouldn't be necessary. I mean, nobody who had a clue about anything would suggest holding a marathon in Tokyo. With the air pollution levels and the sweltering heat and humidity of August, it's going to be a total waste of time.

Instead of do-less oyajis and LDP friends and relations, just put together a group of people interested in and experienced in sports - regardless of whether they graduated Todai or say nice things about Abe.

They don't need to be foreigners. They do need to know what they are dealing with.

It's the same old story, old men with no relevance trying to maintain revelance. If they are so smart why are they still working? Accept it you are beyond doing any good. And it's not 1960..

I can only imagine these two geezers hitting the surf. I'd like to hear how they can contribute to this sport, along with skateboarding and BMX. Maybe they can show us some "wheelies" before being qualified experts.

Why Coates? The dude is 68 years old. beacase he has about 40yrs expertise in sports administration, about 40yrs more than Mori, I mean the dude is leading one of the worlds biggest international sporting events and he cant even speak English that such a position demands.

They need help to move the whole event to October.

John Coates said the majority of the concerns raised in spring have now been addressed.

I expect he went for a swim in Tokyo Bay to test the waters. Because that's where the marathon swimmers and others will be competing during the Games.

MarkX: " love how in Japan you can get people with no connection to something, but they put themselves forward or are promoted by somebody else to become a leader."

Don't tell me you're just figuring that out. Don't you follow the game of musical chairs that is politics here? I think Aso has been like the head of five different ministries, and they are pretty much second to the US under Trump for just hiring cronies with zero background in the field they are leading -- or they just make up new positions for people who were kicked out of office or had to resign from companies in disgrace.

It will be hot and humid. Beijing was just hot and not on an island.

Nice to welcome new sport activities onto the olymp.

So the event will be compared and let the organizers feel the heat too.

Yep, I reckon us old geezer mouth breathers need to be penned and pastured. We ain’t worth a flip now.

I wonder how Tokyo Bay's water quality compares to other past venues of recent times ?

What air pollution levels? The ones which are low to medium? Tokyo has very clean air for a big city.

Why Coates? The dude is 68 years old. 13 years younger than Mori does not make him an expert on sports such as skateboarding, BMX, 3-on-3 basketball and sport climbing, nor any less a "geezer".
