Must have been the most costly Olympics even, as a whole, given the fact that the country was on lockdown and there were no tourists.

*ever

Agree. Japan got next to nothing out of it except a bunch of venues that will rarely be used.

Tokyo taxpayers will now be forced to pay up. And the mind boggling thing is Sapporo wants a piece of this action.

Perhaps all those bentos they threw away didn't cost so much after all.

A game with no spectators and tons of unsold merch…

8 ( +11 / -3 )

The organizers, the metropolitan government and the central government were to jointly shoulder the games' financial burden.

The article just needed to say "the tax payers of Japan". That's it. All the other entities are sponging off of them.

Do the simple math and figure out how much each person in Japan, including children will pay for this farce. Sapporo can pay out of their own pockets if they want to host another joke party.

About 11000yens per citizen

The cost of hosting last year's Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics is now being set at 1.42 trillion yen, down 30 billion yen from the amount forecast in December

don't act as if this is costing LESS than expected. 1.42 trillion, 1.12 trillion, 1.82 trillion, what’s the difference!??? They’re all in the TRILLIONS!!!!

> The organizing committee is set to be dissolved at the end of this month.

Are they serious? Those crooks took their money once the funds were embezzled and all got out of town. There is no “committee.” They’re all on the beach somewhere in the Caribbean.

10 ( +14 / -4 )

Olympic Committee….Crooks…..basically a big government scheme to redistribute wealth from taxpayers to the rich. They all need some retribution.

4 ( +7 / -3 )

Only 1.42 trillion! Then that’s alright then…. Thief’s the lot of them. But the apathetic population will just say shoganai. Rinse and repeat.

2 ( +8 / -6 )

I still think it could have been moved the following year - this year. Nothing is inflexible. If others can’t participate because they got older - I still believe everyone should have just moved things forward.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

Why keep bringing this up? We all know that the Tokyo Olympics was one the biggest waste of taxpayers' money and that Japan got almost nothing back from it because the entire country was on lockdown when they held it.

No regrats

-4 ( +1 / -5 )

Well........ I DONT believe them!

I would add at least 30% to this total for starters, given the 30+yrs of graft & corruption I have witnessed adding 30% is a minimum likely!

1 ( +6 / -5 )

Time flies! Almost a year since the delayed Tokyo Olympics. Hoping another Japanese city might be able to host a summer Olympics in the future.

¥30billion from ¥1.72trillion. That's a huge, whopping, gigantic, humungous 1.7%.

Omedetou Gozaimasu!

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

Oops. It was originally ¥1.45trillion, not¥1.72trillion.

So, the reduction is 2%. Even more humungous!

Double omedetou gozaimasu!!!

Totally forgotten except for the bill....

Japan got next to nothing out of it except a bunch of venues that will rarely be used.

Just wait until you see all the other brilliant ways your tax dollars are spent.

funny how Japan finds the money to host all these events yet cant find the money to help those in need in Japan, like the thousands that lost their jobs or business due to the lockdown. Lets not even get to the wage crisis and inflation but hey it was a pretty event.

5 ( +7 / -2 )

The foxes telling you that they ate less hens in the hen house than they thought.

There will never be an independent audit; files wlll be deleted and documents shredded as soon as it has been officially announced.

Now for Sapporo 2030...

You are absolutely correct! By the way, how you got downvoted for this comment is unbelievable!

@didou…

11,000 per citizen

check your calculations again! It’s more like 1.136 million yen per citizen if you are talking about the cost of hosting the farce Olympics ( 1.42 trillion ) shared amongst each of the 125 million citizen in Japan !

Spot on! The real cost will be definitely higher as the organizers try to paint a fake picture as to hide the reality!

@didou…About 11000yens per citizen

Where the heck did you pull out this number from??? Wrong math !!!! It’s more like 1.14 million per citizen !

a source with knowledge of the matter said Saturday.

Most likely that's Shinzo "Everything is under control" Abe. You'd have to be simple beyond belief to give any credence to these numbers, especially after the Organizing Committee burned the accounts books the instant Nagano 1998 Winter Olympics finished, and all the accounts for the 2020 Bid Committee were deleted the moment Tokyo won. And let's not mention the sad suicide of Yasushi Moriya, the head of the JOC's accounting department.

The number is about 10.5 billion USD, which seems unlikely given the totals announced around the time of the Games. It would not be the first time Japanese have produced a "total" that does not include everything. The official cost of the Fukushima disaster is also highly dubious, to give one example.

I reckon the real figure will be at least double.

As is, 10.5 billion USD between 125 million people is just under 100USD each so yes, about 11,000 yen per capita. I'm using dollars because smaller numbers are easier for non-astrophysists like myself.

I am amazed that these sorts of projects come in 3 or 4 times over the original estimate/budget, its about time the organisers held the companies to the original quote, is it there mantra to think, lets go in cheap, then shaft them half way through the project saying weve underestimated the goods and we need more money, knowing that the goverment or local authorities need the project to go ahead, and be compleated on time? if we the general public, asked a builder to come and build a extention or patio, gave you a price, then half way through, said the price has just jumped up by 4 times the original quote, you would just laugh at him,

1 ( +1 / -0 )

That's what, like $10.5 Billion USD at 135 to the dollar? Including construction costs for stadia, facilities and apartment complexes?

Meh. The SoFi stadium in Los Angeles, for example, which will host the LA Olympics, cost over $5.5 billion USD alone. Just the stadium! Not a fan of the Olympics, but I thought they had spent much more than this...
