“It’s a cultural ceremony that requires deep levels of understanding, with numerous camera angles and our commentary laid over it. We think it’s important to give it the proper context

blah blah blah

Talking heads have to talk, then cut to a commercial.

I tried watching it live this morning but got tired of the announcers.

“Can NBC slip in a bit of the Olympic opening ceremony between the commercials?!”

That about says it all.

This is one of the worst parts about my American culture. Ralph Nader was the only presidential candidate to my knowledge to ever broach the subject that the people own the airwaves, and we lease it to the broadcasters, and therefore, should have some say over the excessive advertising, especially for events like this.

Lobbyists rule the day.

These guys are as bad as Japanese broadcasters -- but at least the latter did not delay.

Even more irritating is that nbc requested major swimming and athletics finals to be scheduled just before midnight local time when it's prime time from NY to LA. Same for football and other major sports, kick off around 10pm local.

Just shows Olympics aren't about athletes but $. Euros and Africans are the big losers in this, not so bad for apac.

NBC sucks!!! Sporting event should always be aired live. The U.S. is the only country in the world that is tuck watching things on tape delay. You can't even see things on-line in America until NBC has aired them. Anyone who is interested in specific events knows the results a soon as they occur. These games are being played in this hemisphere, nothing should be on tape delay.

It’s a cultural ceremony that requires deep levels of understanding

And NBC is only prepared to deliver to the lowest common denominator. Never mind that almost every country on earth is represented.

If NHK can do it, NBC can. Ridiculous.

Didn't this happen to the poor American viewers during the last Olympics?

Thank god for the internet. I can watch what I like without being subject to watching only select sports with athletes from select countries.

Lobbyists rule the day.

You've got your "Villian de jour" mixed up. Lobbyists don't control advertising. Advertisers do.

What the hell are you even talking about? The best multiple network, around the clock coverage of the Olympics I have ever seen was from Japan.
