Here's the full text:

“I want to apologize for my behavior last weekend — for not being more careful and candid in how I described the events of that early morning and for my role in taking the focus away from the many athletes fulfilling their dreams of participating in the Olympics,”

"It's traumatic to be out late with your friends in a foreign country — with a language barrier, and have a stranger point a gun at you and demand money to let you leave, but regardless of the behavior of anyone else that night, I should have been much more responsible in how I handled myself and for that I am sorry to my teammates, my fans, my fellow competitors, my sponsors, and the hosts of this great event"

I tell ya, if my teen age boy got drunk and led some younger boys who looked up to him in vandalizing a bathroom, and then pulled some stunt like that, and gave me that, well, let's just say it wouldn't be acceptable.

People who are sorry for what they do do not talk like that.

“There has already been too much said and too many valuable resources dedicated to what happened last weekend, so I hope we spend our time celebrating the great stories and performances of these games,” Lochte said.

Translation as to what he really thinks: "I dont really understand what all the fuss is about because I didn't do anything wrong. I am just an all American boy having his fun and if others dont understand that is their problem"

The great leader of the pack leaves his young fellow Americans to face the music. How noble and brave. Hope he dyes his hair back. That shade of green is horrible.

Just another Stupid American doing what they do best make Americans look stupid and ignorant..He should lose his Gold medal for begin such a turd...

The guy is a complete idiot! Good luck with getting future sponsors. Feigen paying 10k is a little price to pay for the insult and damage he brought to the athletes, the US and trying to put Rio in a bad, bad light. The guy is a complete embarrassment as well as selfish. How old is Lochte??! Maybe when he's 40 he'll grow up, some!

Only thing that makes me happy about this is that the truth came out and they had to face the music.

It wasn't just bad behavior, being drunk and disrespectful. Lochte committed a crime by filing a false police report. His allegation implied that the police themselves could be involved because he said guys dressed as cops, with badges, pulled the cab over on the road. He wasted their time and resources on a wild goose chase. It's a lot more than just being disrespectful to a host country.

I read somewhere that they didn't file a police report.

I haven't been able to verify that though.

saying he should have been more “careful and candid”

Translation 'I shouldn't have lied my ass off, because I got caught'.

They were drunk. Maybe in their drunken state they thought they were being robbed.

What apology?! The bloke is looking for excuses! 'Sorry for not being more candid' is a bit like people saying that their main weakness is 'being too perfectionist' or 'too generous'. Pllllleaaaaaase!

On the other hand kudos to American fans (on JT and elsewhere), journos and team usa who not only apologized but also acknowledged Lochte was an embarrassment to the country and a tool. Well done usa!

The swimmers will likely have to pay a fine if found guilty of filing a false police report but would not face prison time, police said Thursday.
