Kreza: You are right, of course, I just don't like the arrogance of some athletes or their nation's Olympic committee going into the event. Of COURSE the athletes are human, so why do they actually bank on getting a certain amount of gold medals like they are entitled to them?

Anyway, hopefully Uchimura and the Japanese team can make up for it today.

smith - China is the reigning Olympic and World champion in 2011. Japan won the silver in both of those competitions. I don't think it's unreasonable of the Japanese team to have been focused on China, though like Uchimura said, that might not have been the best idea.

"I hope the 15 golds Japan felt entitled to weren't dependent on Uchimura's performance, and seriously, I want an explanation as to he is an extraordinary human being according to J-media but has not beat ordinary humans."

He's been the all-around world champion three years in a row. The first time that's ever happened in the history of gymnastics. I think it's fair to call him extraordinary. But alas, he is human, and humans are prone to error. Usain Bolt (which NHK did a special documentary on as well to show how extraordinary he is) is another example of an extraordinary human who has struggled recently. Potential isn't always met when you play the games.

Wow... this guy's downfall is going to be a definite conversation stopper -- worse than bringing up the Hanshin Tigers! I hope the 15 golds Japan felt entitled to weren't dependent on Uchimura's performance, and seriously, I want an explanation as to he is an extraordinary human being according to J-media but has not beat ordinary humans.

Kreza: neither has made the top three, so what relevance does his statement have?

I think some people here are misinterpreting this as some political statement. The only reason he said that they shouldn't be preoccupied with China is because they were seen as the biggest threat to take the gold in this event.

Japan and China will resume hostilities in the team competition on Monday

This is not a Olympic game, it is a war, a propaganda war!

Uchimura says Japan cannot afford to be distracted by China again.

He better be serious, otherwise another humilations from China over Japan's performances in the Olympics will causing a terrible shocks to the Japanese societies!

Perhaps Uchimura ought to see it as a world event, not a competition with China. Then maybe he wouldn't fall so much?

"Japan and China will resume hostilities in the team competition on Monday"

The Olympics - bringing the world together, ha ha!

I hope that he regains his form, what I've seen of him in the runup to the games has been nothing less than brilliant.

Didn't see the gymnastics, but I still see him as the favourite. He'll have to concentrate, though.

That's the problem - the Japanese are so preoccupied about getting one over China that they can't seem to look at the larger picture. Will they be content with mediocre results as long as they do better than China? My advice is to do you best and forget about others. If you really want to have Asian bragging rights - then you're up against South Korea (who have already done better in the last summer and winter Olympics) because China is out of your league.

Was this kind of language really necessary (and repeated twice in the article)...???
