seems like "Muchova beats Osaka" would have been a more accurate headline.

shame they didn't see fit to include a photo of the winner.

It is a japanese newspaper, makes total sense to highlight the japanese athlete, that’s what the article is about.

Hoping Naomi does better next time!

@AG

"total sense" is not an absolute. I'm happy for you to see it your way. seems a shame to me.

Yeah, FOUR photos, and not one shot of 'the other player'.

She can't wait to get on the plane home to LA

More Naomi bashing.

Tremble, puny keyboard warriors, tremble.

She is woman. Hear her ROAR.

WTA ranking: Osaka @3, Muchova @20. Editor’s choice to give Prime spot in the AP Headline to the more recognized, higher ranked player despite the majority of the reporting in the story being about the lower ranked player.

We cannot see ANY “bashing” Naomi Osaka here as one poster is alleging @11:44pm. The fact is the higher ranked player has lost, this time.

No need to engage this “Sports” article with any unnecessary, divisive rhetoric about “non-sports” issues like ‘politics or causes’ attributed to the player Naomi Osaka.

A simple “ - “ vote on THIS comment will indicate ANY commenters’ dissatisfaction with those distracting, non-issues to the topic at hand: Ms. Osaka lost to Ms. Muchova, this time.

Last I checked we are in Japan and this website is called Japan Today so I can see them leading with news on a Japanese athlete from a Japan perspective Publications around the world do the exact same thing btw.

Exactly.

Naomi Osaka is an exemplary player, of course Japan should be proud of her, even if she lost. And congratulations to her opponent, Karolina Muchova, in the spirit of graciousness.

Apparently, there is no "we", as I have been told, in no uncertain terms, by the powers that be.

No need to engage this “Sports” article with any unnecessary, divisive rhetoric about “non-sports” issues like ‘politics or causes’ attributed to the player Naomi Osaka.

No need for this topic to be policed, either. I'm sure posters will make their own minds up what's relevant and not, given her high profile and much praised stand on social issues. Naomi Osaka is a winner off court, as well as on.

It appears all previous posters, when commenting on Ms. Osaka’s “sports performance”, including @11:38am, could easily comprehend the ‘spirit & intent’ of the author(s)’s ‘accurate & factual’ “Sports” reporting. So therefore, everyone used her appropriate name and/or her ‘respectfully intended’ pronouns of “She” and “Her” for Ms. Osaka. So, the additional clarification @11:44am of:

“She is woman” -

seems redundant and frankly, unnecessary. There’s no question of gender here. In addition, the divisions and scores are easily understood as the article concludes with a separate division of “men’s” stats:

“In the men's draw, 11th-Denis Shapovalov won 90% of his 1st-serve pts to beat Dusan Lajovic 6-1, 6-3 and reach the 2nd round. American Tommy Paul defeated Pedro Martínez 6-4, 7-5.” -

The authors have been quite thorough in their on-topic “Sports” coverage. Therefore, no further clarifications and deviations from just the ‘wins & losses’ ranked in specific ‘gendered-assigned divisions’ is believed to be necessary.

Regardless, “Best Wishes” to both, the women’s and the men’s players in all future endeavors in their chosen “Sports”. We look forward to reading more “Sports” in this “Sports” section.

Yes @Harry_Gatto 6:29pm. “ + ” vote here if you enjoy reading just about “Sports” like:

Naomi Osaka and Karolina Muchova played some tennis and one of them won the match.”

Along with some “Sports-Related Comments” like:

We think she’s great!”

Just one reader’s opinion but it seems to be what Sports enthusiasts would want to read in the “Sports” section.

Indeed.

But some people seem to feel the need to give a running commentary on what others post, and how they should vote.

I guess you missed the articles on JT about that Japanese football team called Man United and that Japanese race driver called Lewis Hamilton.

Back on topic please.

Yeah, one pic in four of the, you know, winner of the match? That would've been nice. Maybe next time.

The selective focus reminds me of Naomi's first ever victory at the US Open, when all the spotlights were on loser Serena's tantrums and excuses, so much so that the then-timid-newbie-to-fame Naomi actually felt the need to apologize to her erstwhile heroine for...beating her at a US Open!

Anyway, plenty of opportunities of Naomi to come...congrats to the (photo not available), too.

Nothing was wrong with the headline. I learned who was competing, who won, and because it took 3 sets it was a competitive match.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Can't win them all, and congrats all the same to Osaka, and a big one to Muchova. It is good to have strong competition -- for everyone.
