I just cancelled my Peacock account (NBC-owned, streaming the Games). Their advertisers paid a lot of money, but they won't be reaching my eyes.

Wait until you find out at least one transgender athlete openly competed in Tokyo 2021 (In women's weightlifting). I guess you didn't watch any of the Tokyo 2021 Games either?

This has been the highlight so far for me. It was an absolutely thrilling match. I think they were even unlucky against Italy and got a lot of near-miss off-target hits. When a match is so close, that's tremendous pressure, and Ueno handled it very well indeed. If you haven't seen much in the way of fencing, watch how Sera Azuma moves, she is an incredible athlete with ridiculous form. Well done!

I think the reason the headline is about Japan’s bronze is because it was their first time ever winning a medal in fencing and the fact that this website is called Japantoday. With that said, congratulations to all players of all three countries, US, Canada, and Japan.

@Gene, I stand corrected! The headline says “women’s first,” didn’t mean to generalize. I guess it was the first for the women’s fencing foil category.

There's a first time for everything in every category and Japan did so today in women's fencing.

No problems. Japan actually won the Gold in the Team épée in 2021. But are yet to win an individual Gold, I think.

Hats off to all these medalists from the US, Italy and Japan in what is a heck of a tough and technical sport!

The United States won gold, 45-39 over Italy.

That's also historic - that's the US' first women team gold!

the nation's first medal in the event at the Olympics.

It's been impressive watching Japanese competitors reach higher levels in events that at least from what I understand are fairly new to the country.

Well done! No doping needed; it looks like the successes are based mainly on good coaching plus skilled and willing athletes. Hopefully the medal stacks will reach even higher.

Not sure who told you that. Japan has won multiple medals in fencing at past Olympics including gold.

A Kyodo article on a website called Japan Today and you didn't want them to focus on this historic achievement? Here the priority will always go to Japan/Japanese athletes.

Nope. Assuming you're referring to the Algerian woman who beat the Italian, she is a woman. Not a trans woman. A CIS woman, who was born female, with female genitalia at birth.

But, just like the uneducated folks who wrongly accused the French Olympic Committee of mocking a painting of the Last Supper, they have wrongly accused that boxer of being transgender.

No surprise, given that facts never got in the way if their opinions before. So, why should they let facts get in the way now, when there's some good outrage to be had.
