Best laid plans? The best plans is not holding olympics at all during pandemic. People die at home because medical facility is being stretched.

The word is “hunger”.

I'm sorry, but these athletes really sound spoiled and privileged! Is it not enough that they were able to come to Japan and still take part in games, games during a pandemic, with countless people dying, losing their jobs, homes etc. I wanted to party, and sightsee! My husband couldn't be with me, I'm so proud of myself doing it alone! It is understandable why people were and are turned off by this event. Good luck Paris, if there is a Paris in 3 years!

Would be interestung to be an athlete and have only your own performance to think about.
Of course Japan was an ofd experience. While you bad a bad time, the public was also in some form of restrictions as well.

It is interesting to note that those who were most enthusiastic about the games had more or less the same egocentric attitude as the athletes referenced in this article ("poor me, I get to go to the Olympic games at the expense of the taxes of my countrymen, with the chance to return covered in glory, and I have to use cutting edge technology to keep in constant contact with my totally supportive family. Woe is me!")

The key part is "through June", before the Olympics even started. The majority of elderly are vaccinated now, if you didn't notice.

No, "hanker" is just fine.

So surprise surprise, the cult of me-me-me runs through the games. We've had to put up with these being forced on us, we will be paying the bill for these 'select few' to get their shiny bits of metal for decades, at least spare us their angst over not having their best friends to their party. Us and our pandemic experience were just a backdrop for them. The party ended over 48 hours ago! The world has already moved on! Forget them, like most of them forgot their 'host' nation.

To those privileged few who complain how tough it was, you were no doubt informed of the limitations before you went, so the choice was yours. Just be thankful that you had an opportunity to display your talent, with all expenses paid.

2024 is still way in the future, however if this pandemic continue until then French people will not be passive as Japanese. Streets and venues will literally be on fire.

That alone would be more entertaining than anything at the Tokyo "games for nobody (except the rich and important)"
I'd love to see Bach breaking out in a cold sweat, watching the Parisians go mental.
