Yubaru: "How interesting, a typical Japanese-style response. What the media puts out is "god" and you defend it in type by justifying your remarks."

Why do you quote yourself (or only me quoting you) and nothing else? Doesn't give the rest of your comment any context. If you're talking about my comment as being a "typical Japanese-style response" then I think you need to rethink what you think such a response would be, because there's no way they would call baseball, or any baseball tournaments they push for, as meaningless, or suggest any other team but the Japanese are the best.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

the tournament leaves a bitter taste in my mouth due to the blatant ethics violations by host Japan.

This coming from koreans is hilarious. Remember the mysterious air conditioning incident at the last world athletic championships? How about the ridiculous boxing outcomes?

Yubaru: "No, the team just won a tournament, it does not crown them as the "best baseball team in the world". That honor still remains with the Dominican Republic as they won the World Baseball Classic. The WC of baseball."

How interesting, a typical Japanese-style response. What the media puts out is "god" and you defend it in type by justifying your remarks.

Not everything the media writes or says is accurate. Done let them fool you.

0 ( +3 / -3 )

t has as much relevance as the WBC (both of which are irrelevant), and many Japanese were saying as much a week ago, including people on this site. If they Koreans go into the next WBC or whatever tournament involving "the world" and lose, then they lose the title of champions

So you are just repeating what the Japanese media is saying. You aren't Japanese yet you certainly (at times) certainly act like one, repeating what the media says whether it's correct or not, and then go to great lengths to justify your position even though it's wrong.

Italy is the absolute worst team in the world when it comes to exaggerated injuries and faking injuries if they lose possession of the ball and/or the other team is in scoring position.

Italy may be the absolute worst team in the world for baseball which was created by America and popular in Japan and SK. That game is not much popular as soccer in the rest of the world.

However current world champion of Germany men soccer team has never beaten Italy in the major tournaments in my living memory. If Italy is the worst soccer team, German team may be the worst of the worst of the soccer teams.

Interestingly host South Korean team have beaten both Italy and Spain in 2002 WC with controversy. SK has never ever played so well as guest team since 2002 until now. They may not play well in foreign soil as home soil.

However it is the best baseball team in the world at the moment. They deserve the Congratulation!

Alex:

So I'm disgusted by this usual "Japan only" attitude by many users

Who said only Japan behaves like this? I said I wasn't surprised, not that some other country (though I don't know which) wouldn't act in this childish way. As I said, in countries like the UK, something this immature wouldn't happen. They'll show the whole competition, regardless of whether the home team makes the final or not. In these places, true sports fan would be enraged otherwise.

Typical that the day after Japan got shoved out of the rugby tournament, very little attention was paid by the local media. And when the final was over, there was suddenly so much interest in local rugby and the now-irritating pose by the main star of the rugby team (although no offence to the guy). Suddenly the whole country's interested in watching, most not even having a clue about the basic rules of rugby.

Every August, if & when, the Japanese make the Little League World Series Finals, the US never neglects their accomplishment. When the US Team does not make it to the Final Games, those games are still played / televised on regular "prime time."

By Little League World Series rules, there will always be an US team in the finals.

But yes, when the US is hosting a major competition that the US takes seriously, the US networks still broadcast the finals where people could watch them, even if the US is not in the finals. The reason the US would host such a competition anyways is (1) they're a fan of the sport and thus (2) would like to grow the sport. So they would broadcast the finals even if the US isn't in it; otherwise, they wouldn't be gracious hosts.

1 ( +4 / -3 )

Booed you?! Well boo bloody hoo. A LOT worse happens in soccer. What do you expect?

During world cup the host country audience is usually more polite, the world cup is not your "usual games".

Anyway my point is that SKoreans are not known for their fair play in sports. The same can be said for many other countries, of course. So I'm disgusted by this usual "Japan only" attitude by many users, who consider "tipically Japanese" only all the bad behaviours, while if there's something good about Japan, that could be considered someway "unique" to Japan, they start endless complaints. These double standards show the bad faith in many users.

-3 ( +6 / -9 )

I'm even happier that sore-loser Japan didn't even make the final

Heh- Heh . . . me too Mocheake. Every August, if & when, the Japanese make the Little League World Series Finals, the US never neglects their accomplishment. When the US Team does not make it to the Final Games, those games are still played / televised on regular "prime time." . . . . The Japanese are poor sports on a game that even isn't Japanese-

2 ( +8 / -6 )

As much as I wanted the US to win, I'm even happier that sore-loser Japan didn't even make the final. It's sickening sometimes trying to explain to people that they aren't that good. To add to that, just the other day some guy tried to tell me Ichiro is a top player in MLB. Give me a break! Hard to root for this country.

1 ( +6 / -5 )

Very disappointing show by the japanese media. Watched 3 games with my wife and daughter and that heart-breaker against Korea. But that's sport. Nothing is ever a given. How disappointing to not know of the broadcast decision and to sit down last night expecting to see the final.

However for the co-host and the host of the world final in Tokyo, to cancel the live broadcast, Japan has showed it is a true "fair weather" sporting nation. It.has little interest in sports in general and just concentrates on Japanese success to the exclusion of others. Posters bringing up other countries bad sportmanship has zero bearing on this case.

Simply, If you want to hold world championsips please accept the fact that your country may not be in the final and show some courtesy to and appreciation of the teams and players that made it to the final. Shoving the live broadcast is an insult.

If you can't do this then stay out of it.

Alex80:

It's normal for your average people losing interest in the game

This is akin to BBC not broadcasting the men's final at Wimbledon live on UK TV after Andy Murray loses in the semi-finals. But then again, having watched Japanese TV, I'm not really surprised at this. I'm really not. No mention of this in the NHK news.

I'm glad Korea won, especially having read the comments by WatchingStuff. Why? Because the Japanese media and many people would be gloating had they lost the gold. This was what exactly happened when Kim Yuna was denied the gold at Sochi. People were really happy, even though Asada Mao came out of Sochi with a big fat ZERO - the Koreans should have been the ones laughing.

Ahaha, I just rewatched part of SKorea/Italy match in 2002...It wasn't during the national anthem, but the Koreans booed us when we had the ball

Booed you?! Well boo bloody hoo. A LOT worse happens in soccer. What do you expect? Gentlemen watching cricket and women sipping earl grey tea? You get racist and homophobic chants. You get punch ups. You get fights even on the pitch. Even Hong Kongers were booing the Chinese national anthem at the HK-China match a few days ago. Big deal! The issue is the behaviour of the authorities, not the ordinary spectators.

carpboy:

If the home team scores a goal, replays galore on the big screen, and if the visitors score... a blank screen accompanied by deafening silence

This is exactly what happens in international volleyball competitions in Japan. And one of those is ALWAYS held in Japan. You can hear a pin drop when the opponents win a point. I remember a few years back, one tournament took place in several Asian cities. In Macau(?) and Hong Kong, there was always applause when Japan or their opponents won a point. But when it came to Japan, the same selfish reaction.

aintgottimetobl: "in group games they lost twice to...guess who ?"

So what? Japan lost twice in the group round to South Korea in the first WBC, then won against them in the final after getting through SOLELY based on points. Didn't stop anyone here from saying Japan was the best in the world despite losing twice and only winning once to SK, and SK only losing that one single game. So what's your point? South Korea beat them fair and square, and they are now the champions, plain and simple. If you want to join the Japan pity party on a separate channel for a private self-glorifying awards ceremony, feel free. Won't change the fact they are not attending the one where they got third.

Yubaru: "No, the team just won a tournament, it does not crown them as the "best baseball team in the world". That honor still remains with the Dominican Republic as they won the World Baseball Classic. The WC of baseball."

It has as much relevance as the WBC (both of which are irrelevant), and many Japanese were saying as much a week ago, including people on this site. If they Koreans go into the next WBC or whatever tournament involving "the world" and lose, then they lose the title of champions. Both tournaments, and there are a ridiculous amount coming out, are meaningless, but share equal weight in their meaninglessness. If the WBC teams all field their nations' best, including MLB players, then I would admit it has relevance as a measure of the best in the world, as soccer does with the World Cup (not the twenty other tournaments they've made up recently).

3 ( +9 / -6 )

watchit,as far as this particular tournament goes, and this tournament only (which I'm doing) they mean everything..

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

All the Japanese who did show up for the game (well of course they sold these tickets thinking Japan would be there instead and these fans couldn't unload their tickets), just stood up and left

All Japanese left huh? All 100%? Sorry to break this to you but people are people and yes, there are people in Japan who like baseball for the sport of it and stayed until the very end of the ceremony.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

They have proven to be the best of the tournament, and currently the best baseball team in the world at present, and are now the champions.

No, the team just won a tournament, it does not crown them as the "best baseball team in the world". That honor still remains with the Dominican Republic as they won the World Baseball Classic. The WC of baseball.

This tournament was a show for the IOC as the baseball federation is trying to get baseball/softball back into the Olympics. The negative aspects of this tournament hopefully will be considered as well in the decision process.

1 ( +4 / -3 )

Alex80: "Ahaha, I just rewatched part of SKorea/Italy match in 2002."

How sad! Not only can you not comment on what Japan did in terms of changing venues, times, then cancelling the broadcast, and then not attending the medal ceremony because they lost in favor of making off-topic remarks about World Cup SOCCER in 2002, you need to rematch a 13 year-old game to do it?? I think you've hit a new low, Alex. In any case, since you brought him it up, no, it was Italh that was pathetic in that game. Remember the part when their lead player took a dive and pretended to be injured, then leapt up and BEGGED the ref not to kick him out when he got a red card, shouting "Mama Mia!"?? That was awesome, and the perfect call for a team of perpetual fakers and whiners.

This has nothing to do with Italy, Alex, nor soccer.

Aintgotimetobl: "Koreans the best in the world ? Ranked 8th coming into the tournament more than 400 points behind top ranked Japan and 2nd ranked USA.. Sorry..they're 8th and beat Japan on a colossal manager's error..and USA losing those 3 players prior to the final.. Proven,Smith ? in group games they lost twice to...guess who ? If they played again tomorrow the bookies wouldnt let you on Japan...up all night to get lucky.."

Haha... Yes, they are better than Japan, and hence they won. As for your "they lost two times guess to whom", remember Ichiro throwing a hissy fit in the second game Japan lost to South Korea in the first WBC before going through on points then beating SK in the final? Guess who Japan lost two games to before winning one? I bet back then you weren't complaining or even pointing out who had the better stats of the two. In any case, Japan had a good team, but lost; what people are talking about here is the pathetic way in which the nation has handled it before and after the match. The fact that you guys can't even comment on that is telling.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Papi...first: I am not Japanese, I am an Italian woman (fun fact that probably you don't know: "papi" in Italian means "daddy"); second: of course they changed their mind after Japan lost, do you think USA/S.Korea game could do the same rating as a final game involving Japan? It's normal for your average people losing interest in the game, and the broadcaster can't lose money just because of your paranoia. Finally, why do you think I'm not Italian? Are you envious that someone who isn't Japanese likes Japan? Since your explanation about many things is based on...envy.

-6 ( +7 / -13 )

They broadcasted the final match but since it couldn't do big ratings, they chose to show it in the early morning.

Alex80, please stop, OK? I don't know if you're really Italian, or Japanese who lived in Italy and who's pretending to be Italian. I don't care. But please keep facts straight, don't claim things that aren't true. They announced that they will not live broadcast the final gold match game, right after Japan lost to Korea. well before the gold game started.

Assuming that a tv channel act in a certain way because of envy, rather than for economic reasons, is paranoia. And also childish.

Considering that much of Japanese TV is now controlled by Japanese government, yes I find that childish.

0 ( +8 / -7 )

In Italy when there's football world cup, that is the main event about sport for the Italian people, Italian equivalent of NHK, called Rai, doesn't broadcast ALL the games, but only the ones with Italy and the most important ones. It's a matter of money. If you want to watch all the games you can do it on pay tv. Rai probably buys only the rights for the games that can get big ratings. Probably in Japan it is the same. They broadcasted the final match but since it couldn't do big ratings, they chose to show it in the early morning. This is how tv works everywhere. For this I spoke about paranoia. Assuming that a tv channel act in a certain way because of envy, rather than for economic reasons, is paranoia. And also childish.

-6 ( +4 / -11 )

Koreans the best in the world ? Ranked 8th coming into the tournament more than 400 points behind top ranked Japan and 2nd ranked USA.. Sorry..they're 8th and beat Japan on a colossal manager's error..

Yes, I kept hearing the Japanese broadcaster constantly saying "first ranked Japan", "best in the world Japan", to ad nauseam. They really believe Japan is number one? Then how come all the Japanese position players in the major leagues, all currently stink? Japan number one? LOL, say that to a MLB fan sitting with his beer in Mid West, and you'll be laughed out of town. For your information, Korea and Japan has almost identical even record when it comes to all time head to head international matches. Japan isn't that much better than S.Korea. But both are certainly no MLB where all the best talents want to play.

1 ( +8 / -7 )

aintgottimetobl

You understand literally nothing about baseball if you take those rankings seriously.

-1 ( +4 / -5 )

PS Italy was in this Premier 12, even though in Italy basically nobody cared because baseball isn't popular here. I don't even know the rules, I like manga/anime about baseball like Mitsuru Adachi's Touch mainly for topics like friendship and personal growth. ;-)

-9 ( +3 / -12 )

LOL at Alex80 bringing up irrelevant topic up to shift the criticisms against Japan. But the equivalent of 2002 and this would have been South Korea refusing to broadcast the World Cup 2002 because they weren't in it, and fans refusing to attend the games and World Cup winning ceremony because they lost to their arch rivals they hate. But anyway...

I'm curious about this. The article says attendance was 40,311, and the Tokyo Dome's capacity is 55,000 (75% full). Is there something I am missing?

If you had seen the game, the stadium had echoes from all the empty seats. It's fairly obvious they were counting ticket sales - the ticket sales where they expected Japan to be in the final. But when it didn't work out, Japanese media all of a sudden didn't care anymore. I guess a lot of them just decided to stay home and do something else instead of watching their hated rivals play.

What's even galling is all the Japanese boycotting the medal ceremony. Now that's so class.

3 ( +8 / -5 )

Koreans the best in the world ? Ranked 8th coming into the tournament more than 400 points behind top ranked Japan and 2nd ranked USA.. Sorry..they're 8th and beat Japan on a colossal manager's error..and USA losing those 3 players prior to the final.. Proven,Smith ? in group games they lost twice to...guess who ? If they played again tomorrow the bookies wouldnt let you on Japan...up all night to get lucky..

-7 ( +5 / -12 )

"Team USA consisted of players not on 40-man MLB rosters..."

Meaning: minor leaguers.

7 ( +8 / -1 )

Ahaha, I just rewatched part of SKorea/Italy match in 2002...It wasn't during the national anthem, but the Koreans booed us when we had the ball, plus they "welcome" us making fun of Italy losing against NKorea in 1966. Nice fair play for the host country. Sorry Smith, Italy isn't the reason why soccer is this bad, during 2002 world cup Italy got 5 regular goals denied. I see you like offending my country as much as Japan. No problem, insult as much as you like, but after 2002 world cup listening to some SKoreans teaching other countries about fair play in sport is simply hilarious. Ask Spanish people too ;-) bye smith :-)

-11 ( +2 / -13 )

WOW I guess in 2020 we will see even less of the Olympics on tv then we did when they were held in Nagano, which wasn't much! Japan just cant seem to do anything right these days, come on Japan, you can & NEED to do better!

5 ( +9 / -4 )

Alex80: Similar attitudes happen in sports everywhere, yes, but not similar practices, and so far you've only been chiding South Korea and the people on here who have congratulated them and pointed out the unfair and disgusting practices by the Japanese side.

What does this have to do with the Soccer World Cup of 2002, when some bad calls were made (and some good -- face it, Alex80, Italy is the absolute worst team in the world when it comes to exaggerated injuries and faking injuries if they lose possession of the ball and/or the other team is in scoring position. Italy is the reason why soccer has become a farce in some respects, and Europe the worst for that kind of crap -- and why they became extremely strict about faking injuries in World Cup tournaments, with red cards coming out automatically). As for booing national anthems, what are you talking about? If it was SK booing Japan here, then sorry, but as insulting as some might take it to be, it was well-deserved in this instance given what Japan pulled.

So tell us, what do you think about what Japan did? And remember, Italy was not in the tournament.

6 ( +11 / -5 )

Similar attitude happens everywhere. I still remember football world cup played in 2002 in Japan and SKorea. Italy played against SKorea in SKorea. The most awful thing that I remember isn't the fact we lost - the Koreans were favored blatantly, but things like that happen everywere, for this I'm losing any interest in international competitions - but the fact that the Korean audience booed our national anathem before the game started. It was very offensive...it was our national anathem, not a generic pop song that you can insult how much you want. :-

-7 ( +6 / -13 )

Congrats to the South Korean team. They have proven to be the best of the tournament, and currently the best baseball team in the world at present, and are now the champions. Park sounds like an outstanding player, and it's good that he will (seemingly) get a chance to play in the MLB.

WatchingStuff: "Even though Korea is the champion, the KBO has announced that Korea might boycott the next tournament due to blatant cheating and favoritism by Japan. Thats how bad the tournament was."

Yes, it's disgusting how pathetic Japan was about this. Most of the die-hard denialists can't even comment on these threads, that's how bad it is. I hope, though, that SK doesn't boycott for a few reasons: 1) they are the champions, and it would be a shame not to have the champions. 2) Japan would only revel in the fact that they have less competition, and would do no less in terms of glorifying themselves or pulling dirty tricks to try and win, so nothing would change except that there would be one less great team.

Alex80: "Are your average Korean people paranoid as much as some guys who write here on JT?"

You need to look up the meaning of the word "paranoid".

"Just kidding but seriously...guys, you seem a bit excessive. XD"

Good that you are joking, but there's nothing excessive about what people are saying. Instead you should be agreeing with the disgusting practices the Japanese put into display all throughout this tournament, and especially for the final. Did you not read about the venue, time, and media changes before and after the team lost? Don't you think it is a little disingenuous that a nation that is soon to host the Olympics not only won't cover a final because they are not in it, had already made all sorts of arrangements for when they win BEFORE the semi-final games? and who refuse to attend a medal ceremony because they were not the gold medal winners? If I were you, I'd be more worried about what kind of hosts they'll be in the future, given how pathetic they were with this. There's nothing excessive about what people are saying -- there is just not enough being said about it in the world of sports.

6 ( +12 / -6 )

Congratulations Korea. Regarding the behaviour of 3rd placed Japan and broadcasters, I've noticed the kind of petulant attitudes mentioned above at my local J-League soccer stadium. If the home team scores a goal, replays galore on the big screen, and if the visitors score... a blank screen accompanied by deafening silence - save for that visiting penned-in pocket of party poopers. Just saving power for Tohoku, I guess.

6 ( +9 / -3 )

Are your average Korean people paranoid as much as some guys who write here on JT? I hope they aren't. Just kidding but seriously...guys, you seem a bit excessive. XD

-13 ( +3 / -17 )

They played this game with stadium two thirds empty.

Interesting comments @WatchingStuff and @Papi2013. I hadn't been following the series of games, so was completely unaware of these behind the scenes shenanigans.

@Papi2013

I'm curious about this. The article says attendance was 40,311, and the Tokyo Dome's capacity is 55,000 (75% full). Is there something I am missing?

0 ( +2 / -2 )

Yeap. :Horrible blatant ethics from Japan. They not only lost on the field, they also lost in fair play. They played this game with stadium two thirds empty. Then when the gold medal ceremony was being held, it was totally empty except for few South Korean fans. All the Japanese who did show up for the game (well of course they sold these tickets thinking Japan would be there instead and these fans couldn't unload their tickets), just stood up and left. All the teams should boycott this tournament. They set up this tournament to glorify Japan, and when it didn't work, they picked up all the toys and left with a big huff. So mature, I tell ya.

7 ( +14 / -7 )

Congratulations to Korea and the USA for 1st and 2nd place. Unfortunately, the tournament leaves a bitter taste in my mouth due to the blatant ethics violations by host Japan. Read the article below:

http://www.japantoday.com/category/sports/view/south-korea-beats-japan-4-3-to-reach-final-of-premier-12

As if that wasn't bad enough, what happened afterwards is just sad. Broadcasters announced that they would not be showing the final live but instead at 3:45 AM. Imagine that, the host country of an international sporting tournament refusing to broadcast the championship live because they couldn't reach the finals. Boo hoo crybabies.

The medal ceremony was even more hilarious. The samurai did not want to attend the medal ceremony as bronze medalists so they instead held their own award ceremony which was much grander in scale then the gold/silver awards. Imagine if this was the Olympics. The gold and silver medalists stand on the podium and are given a minor ovation while the bronze medalist is entirely absent. The bronze medalist instead gets an entirely different award ceremony; full of happy go lucky music, patriotic flags, handshaking, and shoulder tapping. It was as if the final between Korea and the USA didn't exist and that they were the true champions. Absolutely no shame. Completely delusional.

Even though Korea is the champion, the KBO has announced that Korea might boycott the next tournament due to blatant cheating and favoritism by Japan. Thats how bad the tournament was.
