You don't have to be American (just ask the Brits - there's at least one London game every year now), but it is a complicated game. There's a reason that playbooks are thick, several specific coaches are necessary, and players and coaches have to constantly put hours studying film of opponents' plays.

Totally agree. American football is a much more cerebral game than most people give it credit for. Players need to be quite intelligent to digest all of the plays and formations. It's why college players at the draft combine are required to take a Wonderlic intelligence test. Having a quarterback that can audible plays at the line of scrimmage based on what kind of defensive formations are offered, really helps. Also, players have to be flexible to not only catch a ball, but to block, run fake plays, etc. Nowadays, the thick paper playbooks (which used to be as thick as telephone books) have been replaced by iPads.

As for this Superbowl, it started out to be a blowout, but then turned into a very tense and interesting game in the third quarter. Ultimately, those two early turnovers doomed the 49ers. Joe Flacco really impressed me by his timely long balls and accuracy. Overall, a very good Superbowl.

There's a learning curve to it - one can't pick it up just like that. snaps fingers

I am sure it was a thrilling game for the fans of the sport. Which, by the way, I can't understand at all. It is one of those sports that if you are not an American, you can't see the thrill of the game.

There's a reason that playbooks are thick, several specific coaches are necessary, and players and coaches have to constantly put hours studying film of opponents' plays. Like different pieces of chess, everyone (from the coaches to the players) has to have enough smarts to understand what he needs to do in order for the team to execute the plays properly.

With 2 - 1/2 minutes left in the fourth quarter, the 49ers should've ran the ball down their throats four times to get five yards at the end for TD. You have to trust the strong offensive line of the Niners. They have alot of beef in the front line and they should easily get five yards on four plays. They could've ran with Gore or QB options to run for Kaepernick. They didn't need to pass there.

Though I had no dog in this fight, it was a good game nonetheless.

With the new breed of quarterbacks coming out, the game is getting more interesting as the offenses get extremely hard to defend against. The way it's getting lately, these guys study enough to make doctorates seem like a walk in the park. The joy in American football is not the usual "run the ball into a wall of bodies". The joy comes from when a well-executed play leaves the defenders completely fooled and pursuing the wrong person. We used to refer to that as being "faked out of your jockstrap". It doesn't happen often at the professional level so when you DO see it, it's something to savor. With these new quarterbacks, I think I've witnessed it more this year than in the entire last decade.

Great game all in all. I watched the first quarter commuted to work, worked, drove home, got stuck in traffic during the 2nd, halftime, blackout and 3rd quarters watched the 4th quarter

I am going to miss the football season. Now hopefully the Lakers stop slacking off.

Blergh. I hate clicking the wrong button. Put those last two paragraphs in quotes and here's the source for all the quotes:

Whatever happened to the Baltimore Colts?

It reads like a spy thriller. The Baltimore Colts were not happy with having to share an antiquated stadium with the Orioles baseball team. The office space at the stadium was too small for ONE of the teams, never mind TWO of them. For over a decade the owner of the Colts tried to get the city and the state of Maryland to build a new football-only stadium, but the city and state balked. From Wiki:

Meanwhile in Baltimore, the situation worsened and the Maryland State Legislature inserted itself into the dispute — a move that would eventually force Irsay's hand and result in the Colts' final decision to depart. On March 27, 1984, the Maryland Senate passed legislation giving the city of Baltimore the right to seize ownership of the Colts by eminent domain.

Two nights later, the owner of the Colts boxed everything up and moved to Indianapolis in one night without so much as a "Goodbye". Also from wiki:

After he got off the phone with Irsay, Hudnut (the Governor of Indiana) called his neighbor and friend, John B. Smith, after the deal was finalized. Smith happened to also be the chief executive officer of Mayflower Transit, an Indiana-based moving company, and Hudnut asked him to assist the team in their move. Smith sent fifteen Mayflower trucks to Owings Mills and they arrived at the Colts' facility at 2:00 AM the following morning. The reasoning for the late hour of the move was out of fear that the Maryland House of Delegates would also approve the eminent domain bill the State Senate had, which would have resulted in the team being seized the next morning once Maryland Governor Harry Hughes signed the bill into law. Workers loaded all of the team's belongings and the trucks left for Indianapolis. Within eight hours of the Mayflower trucks' arrival in Owings Mills, the Colts were completely gone from Baltimore. Later that day, the House of Delegates indeed passed the bill by a count of 103-19 and Governor Hughes signed it, but by that time it was too late.

All fifteen moving trucks took a different route to Indianapolis from Baltimore, done as a diversion tactic so the Maryland State Police could not enforce the eminent domain law that had just been signed (which, once the law took effect, they would have been able to act upon to force the Colts back to Baltimore). Once a truck got to Indiana, the Indiana State Police would meet it and escort it to Indianapolis— a process repeated until all fifteen vans had reached the destination.

The Super-Bro! The Harbaugh-owl!

Game turned out to be better than it started. It was a blowout, then a blackout, then a shootout, then a goal-line standout!

mukashiyokatta, it's the NFL national championship game. I guess you could say it is the NFL GRAND FINAL if you want, since it is the final game, and it is pretty grand.

What's a "super bowl"?

Is that anything like a GRAND FINAL?
