I think this is what it's going to be, honestly, just praying for good weather. The E-coli they can do something about... maybe, but the weather, no. This year was much cooler than average for most of July, but it will not be that way two years in a row... no way. And this time last August we had three weeks of continuous temperatures above 36°C EVERY DAY, plus humidity, with tens of thousands of cases of heatstroke. So, this little trial with a "cooler" Sunday than average of late is nice, but it is nothing to be relieved over for next year. I think we all know, save maybe the JOC, that it should never have been scheduled for July/August, and that it is not going to be good.

Man, that water looks nasty.

I am sorry to say this could be a disaster in waiting.

We have seen this time and again in Japan -- doing something they know is a bad idea (or at least, at a bad time) and just hoping something doesn't go wrong even though it eventually will). I mean, imagine what will happen if even one athlete passes out from heatstroke. How can they honestly award medals without contention? And that's forgetting about the health of the person to begin with. This is Japan's last chance -- right now -- to change it to a different time of year. But they will not. They will just hope for a miracle, and lest we forget a lot of the "coolness" we felt for this one day was due to a typhoon! So, I mean, are they going to pray for a typhoon to hit to cool things down?

One mouthful of that water would be enough to send the victim to hospital!

kurisupisu: "One mouthful of that water would be enough to send the victim to hospital!"

One mouthful of that would see you dead in no time, even forgetting the fact it's salt water to begin with.

The swimming leg of the paratriathlon on Saturday was scrapped after water tests showed levels of e-coli bacteria more than double the acceptable standard and the running section of a women's test event on Thursday was curtailed in blistering temperatures,

Smooth? And what happens if those conditions appear on the day of the race? To say that they were lucky temperatures dropped slightly on Sunday is an understatement.

So they're basically swimming Inna sewer? Where's the IOC? Just how much corrupted has sport become?

This is Japan's last chance -- right now -- to change it to a different time of year. But they will not.

Unfortunately, I think they no leverage on it at all. The IOC said it was to be during July-August period or not. Japan wanted the Olympics so they say yes. The people involved only cared for the money/good publicity they excepted to gain from it. Same goes with the in Tokyo area setting, most likely. The IOC wanted everything in one place, Japan just got a few opening for other area. Countries should just start send IOC flying, it should convince it to be more lenient.

For the Tokyo Olympics, all that is left is to find viable solution, but I have some doubt ... Lot of suggestions were already made in the comments, some are even beneficial in the long run : increase greenery, move out companies, ministry, ... out of Tokyo, ...

Not that I except the one in power to have better idea than : lets rely on aircon.

I agree with smithinjapan. We're in pray-for-no-heatwave territory.

As it happens, the last 20 days in Tokyo have been 2.9C above average. That's an average of 2.9C above average 24 hours a day for 20 days. No respite at all. A Japanese link for the data is here.

My town has merely been 2.5C above. We've had five of the seven highest ever daily lows this August, which effectively means the highest overnight temps. I've definitely noticed my home not cooling down like normal.

Most bodies of water have bacteria associated with major cities. 1000% better than Brazil Olympics. The Hudson river next to New York City is a polluted mess. It's all normal.

That water looks like muck.

They should being doing medical checks on these athletes over the course of the next week or so, to ensure they didnt "pick something up" from the water!

Who would willingly swim in that putrid muck?
