Ashley Young is a disgrace. Ferguson spoke to him about diving and Moyes said he'll speak to him after this. Ruined the game.

Young really does need to stop his diving, but I'm not sure how he ruined this match? There were several warnings from the official to players before he gave Young a yellow for his dive (and it certainly was a dive), but what ruined this match was the red shown to Dikgacoi for bringing down Young at the edge of the box which certainly was NOT a dive on Young's part. That was a legitimate offense and a penalty kick. If you have a gripe with the the official, Moss I think was his name, for giving Dikgacoi a straight red for tackling Young from behind in the area, then I'm with you because at most he should have gotten a yellow, but still that's hardly Young's fault. Regardless, Palace managed not a single shot on goal in the first half with 11, so had the match continued without the red card with Palace not going completely defensive in the second half, they would have been beaten worse by the end of 90 plus. Hope Moyes reads Young the riot act on his habit of going down too easily. That stuff just doesn't belong anywhere in the BPL.

@USN Young ruins games by putting pressure on refs by either going sprawling with no contact or making a meal out if any contact at all. The dive for which he was yellowed was pathetic and while I think it was a foul for the pen, it was outside the box and Young made the most of it, hence the red and pen. Refs have a difficult job to do, particularly at the stadiums of the big clubs, and players like Young are a nightmare.

Did you actually watch the Manure match? Palace player Gayle almost scored a couple of minutes before the sending off.

Why use pointless derogatory terms when talking about teams? Embarrassing to read.

The tackle was on the line., not outside the box as you say. And the reason it was a straight red was because several Palace players confronted and protested to the official and he obviously didn't like what they had to say. So Young dives, gets a yellow card for it, then is tackled and brought down later in a manner which prompts the official to give out a red card in his favor? And it's his fault? Ya, that makes sense.

Almost scored? You mean the one bumbled chip shot that Gayle managed to take because Rio let him get past him on the left? The one that sailed past the goal untouched by defender or keeper? See, being just an American I'd thought that that's what's called a shot OFF target, you know the ones that don't count because there's no chance of them going in, even unhindered. So did you watch the match? Because if you did you'd know that Crystal Palace had a grand total of ZERO shots on target and that van Persie alone hit the woodwork more times than Crystal Palace had shots on or off target combined.

They should have a match review system, similar to that which is used in Australian AFL & NRL. If anyone is found to be diving, give them a two or three game suspension. That will soon stop players from doing it.

@USinjapan

I merely corrected you that Crystal Palace did not have a shot in the first half, did mit mention how many or anything. Actuall the shot did almost go in and the player went past Ferdinand. I enjoy football, but when mynteam plays i am an adult and don'tbtalk BS.

@USN You say 'on the line' so no pen. I don't see the point of your hair-splitting here. What's your point? As to your idea that refs aren't conned by notorious divers, I can only assume that you became a Man U fan after van Niistelrooy left.

You say 'on the line' so no pen. I don't see the point of your hair-splitting here.

No, the opposite. I said that on the line is a penalty, especially in a case like this one where the striker is past the defenders and the tackle from behind (on the player and not the ball) is the only thing preventing him from making a clear attempt on goal. I'm well aware that refs are influenced by players who ham up a dive to gain a penalty, but all I'm saying is Young did nothing of the kind with this penalty/red card on Dikgacoi. He was tackled from behind in the area while making an attempt on goal which is a clear penalty kick. I agree with you that it shouldn't have been a straight red, but I don't agree with you that Young somehow influenced the ref in his decision to card Dikgacoi a red through his actions during the rest of the match. If anything, with his previous yellow card for diving, you would think that the ref would have been lenient on Dikgacoi if he had any suspicion that Young may have dived again. Obviously he didn't.

I merely corrected you...

Who are you? And what are you talking about?

This is a screencap of the penalty incident. He's at least 1 metre short of the line.

In all fairness, this screencap is a second or two before Dikgacoi's actually takes Young down from behind. This video starting at the 10 second point better shows how close the call was for the first official. He even consulted his linesman and considering the volume of United's attacks prior to this and that Dikgacoi was the last defender, well that's the call he made. I think it should have been a yellow card and not red, but Young didn't dive on this play and was fouled fair and square. Young certainly deserved his earlier yellow card, but to blame Young for the decision the ref made to award a red card here is just ridiculous.

@USN For crying out loud, this is not a penalty. It's a difficult call but clearly outside and if you think Young hasn't made a meal of it ( there is contact ), I can only conclude you've never played football. I think Young is one of the worst offenders for this but he's certainly not alone. Call it canny or being a cheat depending on your particular bias, but to say this isn't the case is to misunderstand the player and the game and requires Elton John size rose-tinted glasses.

When a team has had its defense beaten constantly/repeatedly in a game and then their last defender resorts to this to bring a striker down, it's a penalty and rightly so. That's what I learned playing through my university years and that's what I'm accustomed to seeing in the PL. Guess that official was wearing some rose-tinted glasses too...

Interesting bit of banter between Man Ure and Crystal Defence fans. Meanwhile on the same day Arsenal go top of the league...

jimizo yep it was a penalty thats what the ref awarded ,whether it should have been is a different argument though .
