I'll happily deal even with a scalper to get to see one match in a stadium with my own eyes.

As much as scalpers are a major issue, it is gullible people who will take a chance buying from them not knowing if the tickets are genuine or not.

Simple - ban sites like viagogo, make reselling a punishable crime and actually track down offenders. They have the resources to do it.

Tickets for some games being resold for 7x face value.

There should be better registration for tickets and maybe even ID checks.

STOP these criminals!

For many years holographic images have been used on credit cards why not on highly priced tickets?

In so many words...enough said!

The RWC ticket organisation is a mess. I have been waiting months for a refund on officially resold tickets.

I'm assuming they do have ID checks, which is why it says firstname lastname on the ticket. And they have already turned people away as the article says. If people are smart enough not to buy a ticket without having their name registered to it, then the criminals won't be able to do business.

Surely turning people away simply means empty seats. What a waste!

Once again the lede has been buried under murky doublespeak. Par for the course here, sadly. This has nothing to do with counterfeit or fake tickets. Although the article is poorly written with poorly worded quotations the context is there. Had to read it a few times myself to understand what they are in fact shamelessly admitting. They are outright refusing entrance to ticket holders of legitimate official tickets. How or by what mechanism or method they can go about deciding whether or not to 'Invalidate' actual legitimate tickets is itself a seemingly rather opaque and unclear process arbitrarily enforced.

I found this on the official site

Who's to say for example you weren't merely gifted a ticket? Does that make it invalid?

This is going to be awesome next year when the Olympics roll into town. Row after row of empty bleachers will make it a challenge for the content producers and their wide view stadium shots utilizing the latest in 4K and 8K technology.

I wonder how many of the criminals are actually Japanese.

I’ve seen quite a few tickets for sale on Craigslist. I guess there are a lot of desperate and stupid people out there. I’m sure the Olympic will be much worse.

Ill come just to hang around outside and check out the scenery.

They just scanned the QR code on my tickets when I went through the gate. Didn't ask for an ID or even look at the info on the tickets.

I stand corrected then. The "illegally resold tickets" quote threw me off. After reading a related article in Japanese, it seems they are just bogus tickets.

For the Olympics, they have made it very clear they'll do ID checks. If you want to gift/sell the ticket, you have to change the name on the official website before using them.

The article is wrong... There is now way to know if the tickets have been resold.. and yes, they have holograms. All the tickets I bought for friends have my name on them.

Friends have bought tickets near the stadium for face value or less. Some have been given tickets for free.

Haven’t seen a single scalper.

There are literally hundreds of extra tickets held for people who couldn't make it. Yet no way to resale them outside the venue on the day. WRC just need to set up a booth outside each game where they can validate extra tickets, then offer them for resale to walk up customers and refund half the sale back to the original holders credit card. I'd have gladly given mine away just so someone could enjoy the game but it was chaos and there was no available process, there had to be at least 5 to 10 other people just in the one spot I was in trying to get rid of tickets for people who couldn't make it. Eventually I gave up, went inside and then swapped the ticket for two beers with someone who held another ticket but had a bunch of friends sitting behind us, so not a total loss.
