I'm not looking forward to the increase in rugby bros at all.

Same here. I like the game but can’t stand many of the types who play and surround it.
Pains in the backside.

The insecurity on this and other recent rugby-related thread is quite hilarious. Not the first time I see this tbh; Japan's (& Asia's) long-term gaijins tend to feel threatened by other (in some/most cases more successful -career-wise, 'bigger' etc) westerners (tourists, relatively new comers...).
My only concern re beer & rugby folks is how they're going to manage nomihodai during the rwc. Still remember the sweet smell of puke, stale piss/beer at 'nomihodai' Spanish bars/clubs in the 90s.
This could get ugly/interesting!

Actually I was kind of hoping to go to that U.S. vs England match in Kobe so I could throw down some Heinekens with English fans while they probably destroy my USA team. It is a weekday game though and have to work. I look forward to attending the U.S. game vs Tonga!

@DadDude, man, you don’t look so good. You should take the day off. Remember: Stay well hydrated. ;-)

The Fan Zone in front of Hakata Station in Fukuoka has listed Heineken as ¥700 per handle, somewhat steep so I plan to preload at the Lawson next to the pavilion before the Blackness take on the Saffa's in the unofficial World Cup Final :)

In rugby, it is the players that tend to drink to excess, not the fans...
ClippetyClop
You will shortly be proved very mistaken.
kohakuebisu
Don't they have a good idea from ticket sales how many are coming?
Will the fan zones show the games featuring teams aside from Japan with English commentaries? I watch soccer games on DAZN with Japanese commentaries and it's dire. Until last year, Premier League football could be watched with an international feed English commentary (not the UK SkySports one) on BS Satellite, but now its DAZN only.

And South Korea is helping make the supply available.

With ticket prices around 35.000 yen (the low end?) and the flight , food, accommodation etc then I doubt there will be much left over for booze!
Maybe, the fans from the UK will be disappointed when their pounds get them a beer at the venue for 7-8 pounds?
Let’s hope they also carry their passports...
Jaymann
something other the usual mass-produced, slop like heineken would make a nice start
ClippetyClop
@kurisupisu I’m not sure where you are plucking your info from today, but it’s all wrong.
Tickets can be bought for less than 3000 yen for some of the less glamorous games. The most expensive ticket is for a Japan game at 50,000 yen.
UK fans are used to getting their pants pulled down for refreshments in sporting venues. I expect the prices in Japan may well be less than they are used to paying back home

Heineken - yuck.

@CC
I was looking at the prices on the JTB website for the games in Kobe.
Ticket prices were at 35,000 yen.
I will be moving around a bit today so might pop into JTB and talk to their staff.
If there are any left at lower prices of 5-10k yen for the England game in Kobe then I will buy one...
goldorak
Often one and the same. Many rugby fans are former players (amateur leagues obviously).
Agree with CC re tix prices, started at around 2,000 yen for games involving so called minnows. Not bad.
ClippetyClop
@kurisupu, good luck fella. List prices for that game range from 5000 - 20,000 yen. JTB making a fat profit if they are selling them for 35 grand

It's a well-known fact that Rugby fans are generally much better behaved and more gentlemanly than soccer fans. Never heard of a rugby hooligan.....

Thanks for the insight there zichi

@zichi
It was a joke. Because SK is not buying Japanese beer, there's more to go around for Welshmen in Japan.
Perfect timing. Brewers won't notice the dip at all and by the time the cup's over, the Korean will be back to drinking it.
Why do they feel the need to drink to excess?
Do they think Japanese alcohol drunkenness feel different from British alcohol drunkenness?
Never understood the (lack of) culture; same men, same stories, same pubs, same teams and the expectation of having to shake hands with drunks all the time when you know fine that nothing them wash their hands after going to the toilet for the 20th time.
Ah_so
I imagine that it feels the same in Japan as in Britain or anywhere - pretty good.
ClippetyClop
Coz it gives us such a wicked buzz. But moderation in all things.
pacificwest
@zichi
Yes, it clearly was. It followed, your response did not.
Ossan wrote, "And South Korea is helping make the supply available" which has nothing to do with them playing. That they were or were not playing is immaterial.
It's the SK beer diplomacy that is the issue, not that they are crap at playing rugby.
Sometimes I worry about your reading comprehension.
goldorak
Dunno about 'gentlemanly' but probably less aggressive, confrontational etc.
Re manners let's be honest rugby folks are no angels. Fair bit of swearing, may occasionally take a dump in urinals ( at away games/bars) but only when our team has been harshly or unfairly refereed. No red card no dump, simple.

International Rules my friends. The drinking rule game of rugby fans. It gets you hammered.
The basic rules are switching the hand you hold your pint in every 15 minutes (there must be an official timekeeper), and never ever saying the word 'drink' (you have to use 'imbibe' instead), sticking your pinky finger out when imbibing etc, etc. Penalties are in the form of downing whatever is decided.
I have never been so drunk than when on International Rules.
