Marcus Smith — someone Jones identified as the future — not first-choice under Borthwick and likely to be a bench-filler with an X-factor.

More likely to be played out of position as full back. England have some exciting players but Jones and Borthwick continue to pick the same old and slow has beens. Dan Cole? Billy Vunipola? The opposing forwards must be happy to see those names on the team sheets.

The rugby team and its afflictions are kinda emblematic of the country: directionless, short-termist, a management disaster, failing to invest, failing to nurture, sliding down the pecking order, occasional fleeting success with foreign leaders.

England's games are so boring, kicking the ball away so the opposing team can charge back with the ball using numerous set piece moves. Meanwhile England's indiscipline gives penalties and scrums away time and time again. I don't hold out much hope for advancement out of the pool games. Borthwick needs to pick young blood, at least they'd get experience of playing on the world stage to advance their career's.

Harsh.... But at least an element of truth.

Luckily they couldn't have gotten an easier draw if they had hand picked it themselves.
