Just let everyone dope. Then it's fair.

There are league which allow that - they are called "professional sports".

Professionals know the risks of doping and accept that their lives may be reduced 40% by doing it. That's their decision. College age and younger athletes aren't mentally ready to accept this. Most haven't lived enough life to truly understand about death. Old people die. That is expected, but when you are 20, "old" is 50. When you are 30, somehow old has shifted to 70, as you know more and more active people in their 60s able to accomplish all sorts of things. I've met hikers in their late 70s that were handling some tough mountain climbs. One guy who I saw a few times a week was extremely fit and I though he was around 50 yrs old - said he was 77 at the time.

The Olympics is a different league. Anyone doping should be banned 2 Olympic cycles. If the doping is found to be systematic, as Russia has been discovered, the entire Russian team needs to be banned 2 Olympic cycles. No don't-call-them-Russian-State athletes allowed, like a few months ago. Block them from all TV. Make it hurt for violations and their country. Make testing less random and more periodic (2x monthly) to prevent the ability to use banned substances.

Clearly, some athletes will lie for years about doping and have all sorts of claims of being "clean". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Lance_Armstrong_doping_allegations

He was doping and didn't win? My god, he must suck

Most of the competitors are doping.

Problem being a multimillionaire sports star can afford the legal battles. The doping agencies can't.

Yeah, look at Sun Yang - he extended his legal battles for years

Henry Montag...

He was doping and didn't win? My god, he must suck

Maybe the others were doping better?

Permanent bans might help though.

That and retro testing of winners samples when science catches up.

Yes, a Russian athlete again. And yes, a slap on the wrist. This, on top of an absence of a boycott of Sochi. And people want to boycott Beijing? Gimme a break.

I wonder what happened to the Brit who was caught doping in the 100m men's relay at Tokyo. If his team forfeits their medal, this will push China up to bronze. I wonder whether people will let a cheater keep his medal if it means China is denied a medal.

There is no solution to doping. well, no cost effective solution.

Of course.

No solution to cheating in general.

Permanent bans might help though.

They will at least weed out those doped up at competition time.

True, it would catch the idiots and those who made a mistake on their doping program. Not the vast majority.

They could also claim that our competition is clean because everyone was tested. They would like that.

In competition testing has been likened to testing drink drivers as they arrive at the pub.

There is no solution to doping. well, no cost effective solution.

But yeah, not an answer to doping =)

This would be pointless, just like the in competition testing they carry out.

They will at least weed out those doped up at competition time.

We can at least do away with post comp dq

I'm shocked, shocked, to find out Russia is cheating!

ian....

They should try that at least once right before a competition, drug test everyone like they do for covid

This would be pointless, just like the in competition testing they carry out.

Almost all doping is carried out in the "training stage"..... For example, steroids to build strength and EPO to boost endurance. Each individual drug has a "glow" period in which it is detectable. The athletes know how much to take and when they will be "glowing"... Only a complete idiot turns up to the event with stuff in their system. Yet the authorities still concentrate on in comp. testing.

Its as if they really don't want to catch the dopers..... Geese and golden eggs anyone?

Ha! But if course he has to be Russian.

Just ban Russia from the games if you wanna teach then a lesson.

Doping in high level sports is just like widespread asymptomatic sarscov2 infection, if you test everyone you'll get a ton of positives

2 ( +4 / -2 )

The only way that Putin’s narco team gets the message is for all Russians to be banned for multiple cycles.

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

The entire Russian team should have been banned. It is clear the are playing the odds and so many of their athletes are doping, but not being caught to make the attempt worth the risk across every sport.

Ban the entire team for 5 yrs (2 Olympic cycles) for every valid doper caught. Apply that to all countries, all sports, and for all reasons including refusing to compete against other athletes who are in the same class for the same event.

This needs to stop. The penalties being applied to 1 athlete/sport isn't working.

Zero shock. Russians and doping go hand in hand.

The crooked IOC were told before allowing these serial, systemic dopers back in that this would happen. But of course $$$ was more important than cleaning up doping.

1 ( +6 / -5 )

His mistake was he stopped injecting too late or was simply dosing too much. A stupid and very amateur error. Probably 80% of the endurance athletes were also micro-dosing EPO in their training, staying under the testing threshold but getting the required benefits.

4 ( +6 / -2 )

There we go AGAIN! They are really not capable of clean sport!

0 ( +4 / -4 )

Banned until during ?

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Russians never stop cheating: from the head of the state to Olympic athletes.

0 ( +7 / -7 )

Wasn't he supposed to be part of the "Honest and clean" delegation from Russia?
