"Despite that, South Korean fans applauded the North’s efforts and a contingent of North Korean athletes in matching track suits stood and waved their national flags throughout the game."

Well, whomever it was the other day that was upset about South Korea cheering on NK in the victory over Japan in women's soccer, here's proof that it was nothing to do, or at least very little, to do with whom NK was playing, but just support for the people in the North. Good on South Korea for the win, and NK for doing as well as they did -- they've proven strong in the men's division as well this time around.

Not surprised by the marathon results, nor am I surprised it was immediately mentioned that the nation that got gold imported athletes from Africa, but oh well. Kizaki did well and got silver.

As for softball and baseball being brought back, I don't think it should be. I realize that for Japan it's a medal chance in all the baseball/softball events, but the fact of the matter is neither are sports that any but a few nations play.

could say that about most of the events, but I guess team sports are harder because unlike individual sports, you can't just train by yourself and expect to get good enough.

smithinjapan: That's right; only 127 nations play softball and only 124 nations belong to the IBF (with only 77 countries with well-established baseball leagues). Wait a minute, that's more nations playing softball and baseball than play curling (50 countries), ice hockey (about 73 member countries), and probably water polo (just a guess, since I only really see a handful of nations being very good at it).
