We would be happy to host the sailing event here in Yokohama. For a price of course. We do have Japan's biggest and best Marina. It's a bit of a no-brainer.

Why are helicopters needed? Surely remote controlled drones that can fly just a few meters to a couple of hundred meters above the boats could be used?

Seeing as Mr. Abe believes that everything is "under control" up in Fukushima, why doesn't some kind soul start a petition to have the sailing in the waters off the power plant? What about it? What better expression of confidence could there be?

Isn't Saitama Super Arena available for basketball? It's hosted the FIBA World Championships before.

Mr Ishihara did his best and combined with the corruption tainted ex-Pm, head of the Japanese delegation have now secured enough paper bags to see out their lives. It's up to a new generation to sort out the mess they have left behind. Pretty obvious what's going on.

And once again the promises that won Japan the games are "changing". And it's not like these reviews don't add to the overall costs. These geniuses didn't think about the helicopters and what not when pitching their "compact" games to the IOC??

All of you are complaining like you are getting directly affected by this.
tokyoclambake
By the way, search for pictures of the Athens venues 10 years on-what a waste.

Even by J-standards this "Olympic games" is VERY seriously messed up! The morons who didn't notice Haneda or they knew but decided to pull a bait & switch are off the charts A-holes of the highest order.
At this rate the opening & closing ceremonies might not even take place in Tokyo for Christ's sake!
papigiulio
@tokyoclambake: A waste perhaps but its build in the middle of nowhere, same as Sochi. So it is a bit different from Tokyo.

Bait and switch
Tessa
They keep changing stuff. Are they allowed to do that?
You obviously aren't a Japan-based taxpayer.
Yep, sounds like it.
Disillusioned
Bait and switch is a good phrase. I would have just said, lie through your butt to get what you want! They were totally aware that there would be conflict with commercial aircraft when they made their application. Their main pitch to get the games was, they could have all the events close to the arhlete's dorms, but the reality is, it was just smoke and mirrors to get the games. Hopefully, the IOC will see through this and start petitioning Japan for explanations.

So what? Tokyo Bay is fine, if congested with commercial traffic, but there are PLENTY of great locations elsewhere.
Notably Hayama in Sagami Wan, where World Cup match races were run very well for a number of years. Only 90 minutes by train from Tokyo. Gorgeous, often with Fuji-san in view.
I guess the "pre-Olympics" will be seeing the off-base comments from all you nay-sayers for the next 6 years. I rate this batch a "6" -- surely you can do better!
gelendestrasse
Yeah, Yokohama or Zushi. Enoshima is too small. Sagami can get awfully rough for small sailboats though.

The only part of the no-brainer, It's the Tokyo Olympics not the Yokohama Olympics. Yokohama is outside the 23 wards in another prefecture.
WilliB
So why did not think of this when they prepared the bid for the Olympics? What is up with this bait-and-switch thing? Do all applicants do this?
DaveAllTogether
Savannah, GA is about 250 miles from Atlanta. That was the site for the sailing events of the '96 Olympics. Venues are quite often not in the city that hosts them. The host city is a focus point for all the activity. The modern Summer Olympics are too big for one city, even one the size of Tokyo.
Ghost rider
The Olympic Games have to take place at the venues according the bid. That's the rule, point an finish. Only the Olympic committee can approve changes. Thinking should always come before acting.

.... and please change the dates of the game to October ... PLEASE!
