Michel Platini once said that English teams were, "like lions in the autumn, lambs in the spring" due to the number & intensity of games that they had to play in their domestic league and the lack of a winter break. With the enormous finances these teams now have, they can afford bigger & better squads and are better prepared for the latter stages of the big tournaments. Barca found this out on Tuesday when they were ran ragged.
That said, Rel & Barca are still the two teams that most players consider to be the pinnacle of club football, and they'll still attract the truly elite players.

Real & Barca have their own rich television deals, while their rivals are left to fight over the crumbs. Real are also renowned for receiving favouritism from the Spanish government. No team outside these two have any hope of challenging them.
Ditto for France (PSG), Italy (Juventus) & Germany (Bayern)
