All these sports competitions are so overrated. Sports are supposed to fun and enjoyable, and it is nothing but hideous business that sucks of the observers and put more and more pressure to the participants. The drive to be the "Top Athlete" so you can get sponsorship and sell shoe, is just not my cup of tea. If you enjoy the sports, do it, but don't become a slave of the sponsors, who just use these events to earn money selling your skills.

Japans bid was all smoke & mirrors & then topped off with a whole LOT of bait & switch!!!

I think I hear shredders starting up somewhere...........

The Guardian also question the role of the Japanese advertising agency Dentsu, in relation to the payments. It may well be the the bid committee did not pay anything directly, but that they paid someone else to do it, with the costs disguised as marketing, promotional, or consultative expenses. That's the way it is usually done!

Japanese Olympic Committee – which oversaw the bid – said its press team was away on business for a week and was unable to respond... In other words, we need to time to spin our story and cover our tracks....

If I were interested in the Olympics I would prefer to see them anywhere but Tokyo .How about Barcelona ? Plenty of sherry and good food.

The 'gone abroad' excuse does not wash in this day and age of 24 hr global communications.

“I am confident that our bid was conducted in a clean manner,” Suga said, adding that should Tokyo be approached by French authorities on the matter, it would cooperate.

Whatever dude.

very true.

if true, this will be the biggest scandal Japan has faced in recent memory, and will be a massive embarrassment for the country. Japan will become the laughingstock of the world.

That is 100% on the money.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga told a news conference that he was unaware of the newspaper report.

He hasn't read the newspaper report, therefore the accusations of bribery are clearly totally unfounded. Obviously.

“I am confident that our bid was conducted in a clean manner,” Suga said, adding that should Tokyo be approached by French authorities on the matter, it would cooperate.

If deflection was an Olympic sport, Suga would be a dead cert for a gold.

Bribery and 'gifts' are what make the IOC such a lucrative scam. This has always been the way they operate. On the other side of the is the corrupt practices of the revenue and wealth the games provide to a very small few. The games are always a drain on the taxpayers money who never see any return.

Instead, the money gets funnelled to the pockets of elites and huge companies who end up sourcing other suppliers for a fraction of the cost. In the end, the Olympic Games do not generate long term revenue for the paying public who host the games but rather it goes into the bank accounts of the brokers who no doubt contribute to the off shore bank accounts of the 'fixers' who make the winning bid happen. This was evident in previous IOC scandals and it appears today that the old adage rings true 'You can't teach a dog new tricks...'

“I am confident that our bid was conducted in a clean manner,” Suga said,

Ok, then. That settles it. Move along. Move along.

Let's hope the Tokyo Olympics get canceled. The average citizen does not benefit from this 2 week doping test obstacle course.

I forgot the topic. Carrots, right? I eat 'em. You should too.

If all the advanced nations in the world were in good financial standing and can host the Olympics, I would say shame on Japan, but Japan, in order to save face, would make sure the 2020 show would go on, even if they have to tax their citizens to death. Brazil's opening day is just around the corner, but will the show go on with a corrupt government, and unbuilt facilities? Would any country in their right mind today, spend billions to advertise their country as a tourist destination? For that, I think Japan was the best candidate in the bidding process, and IOC officials were only too happy to hand it to Japan. Though foolishly, Japan will want to put their best foot forward, and IOC will not have worries as they have with Brazil.

Poor Suga and Co. If it were an internal matter the "I'm quite confident our bid was conducted in a clean manner" would be the end of it, the media not allowed to ask or further comment on it, and just to 'ensure' that it was clean, a Japanese Olympic Committee member panel would be formed to investigate and exonerate itself. He must really be upset that the rest of the world won't allow that.
