It’s just shamefully pathetic when conservatives or non-liberals want to talk sincerely about race and liberals scream and call you a racist or want to shut down the conversation because you don’t agree with these people, and that’s the problem disagreeing with liberal stances on race or identity politics doesn’t make you a racist!

4 ( +9 / -5 )

Naomi seems to have touched a nerve (many nerves), the question should be, why would intelligent adults living a full and satisfying life feel so upset/sensitive and even threatened by what a young athlete says?

No one is! But if we call her opinionated political position into question (or lack of it) is that a bad thing discuss it or call it out? We’re not allowed to debate what JT put up? I mean, that’s what the forum is about, debating and questioning her overall motives is racist? Making fun of her? I don’t think so. It just annoys a lot of people when these celebs jump on the race wagon and these people usually don’t take a stand or a position but since we live in strange times, race and identity politics is everywhere so why not take advantage of that? I’m quite sure her agent advised her to use her notoriety to influence the conversation. Again, nothing to do about fear, sincerity and consistency are the main issues here.

-2 ( +5 / -7 )

As I said, it meets all her criteria to speak out. Black, female, Asian, thats her "thing" when it comes to speaking.

That’s certainly her “thing”.

What a bizarre statement.

If you want to speak out on every issue on the planet go ahead. You’ll be busy.

0 ( +4 / -4 )

I never said such a thing, relax.

-3 ( +3 / -6 )

I dont feel that an Asian immigrant being murdered by Black females would be a "right wing issue".

As I said, it meets all her criteria to speak out. Black, female, Asian, thats her "thing" when it comes to speaking.

She just doesnt like who the oppressor and victim roles belong to in this case, so she will say nothing and no one will even expect her to or ask her. Just wait for next time when the roles meet the narrative, then speak again.

-2 ( +5 / -7 )

Like I said, she’s young and can’t take any position she wants even if it seems illogical.

You guys have been very clear that you don't believe she should be allowed to speak up on issues that have relevance to her. I'm just surprised to see you saying it out loud.

-3 ( +6 / -9 )

She has to be very careful what she says and when, in order to keep that sweet gravy train running, because the moment she verbally (or digitally as is the case these days) step out of line.... BOOM! there goes her millions in sponsorships and appearance fees.

Maybe, just maybe, Naomi-chan is more concerned with addressing injustice and racism than keeping that "sweet gravy train running." Perhaps she has principles, did that cross your mind?

The majority of ethical people and corporations in the world admire and respect her for taking a strong stand against the evil of racism. Naomi-chan is someone who speaks her mind and is loud and proud. If people dont like this, and want to be haters, thats their problem.

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

Maybe she’s speaking for them. You know, as you often claim to do when you say “we”.

Like I said, she’s young and can’t take any position she wants even if it seems illogical.

0 ( +5 / -5 )

I fail to take seriously anyone who criticizes another person for publicly denouncing racism.

If it’s not the spokesperson you hoped for too bad, but the message is out there.

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

Plus nothing at all spoken about racism in Japan, ever.

You know, other than the times she commented on racism in Japan, and got blasted for it by the righties on JT for not also addressing the issues they required, in order for them to not call her hypocritical for addressing her own issues.

-1 ( +5 / -6 )

Black females killing an Asian meet all 3 of her "related" causes. no comment on those, wonder why?

She should be strung up by her toenails for not addressing every issue that a right winger thought held equal relevance ever, when she speaks up on issues.

How could she ever not ensure she first consults with right wingers to determine what other issues she is required to address before her own issues can be addressed. It's downright pathetic.

-3 ( +4 / -7 )

Plus nothing at all spoken about racism in Japan, ever.

Are there any mass shootings on foreigners by Japanese people lately? I love gun control here.

1 ( +4 / -3 )

Black females killing an Asian meet all 3 of her "related" causes. no comment on those, wonder why?

Maybe its called having an "agenda" and not meeting her "narrative".

Plus nothing at all spoken about racism in Japan, ever.

Choosing causes that are relative to her,

1 ( +8 / -7 )

@Hito Bito

Against my better judgement, I respond to somebody who talks about an 'anti-white agenda', but you're misrepresenting the data. For anyone who wants to see for themselves, here's the information:

https://www.justice.gov/hatecrimes/hate-crime-statistics

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Pathetic diversionary responses from the usual suspects. To be expected.

-2 ( +3 / -5 )

Osaka is NOT one of them, not to mention, look at her house and where she vacations, the woman is not about to move into an all black neighborhood if she were to return to the States.

Maybe she’s speaking for them. You know, as you often claim to do when you say “we”.

-3 ( +3 / -6 )

How can the ethnic group which has the highest median income in the US be oppressed?

This is correct. Racism is negated if you pay the victims enough.

0 ( +6 / -6 )

How can the ethnic group which has the highest median income in the US be oppressed?

Who is the oppressor?

The poorer people below them?

Exactly, the people that are complaining the most about oppression especially in the Sports field are far from it. Osaka is NOT one of them, not to mention, look at her house and where she vacations, the woman is not about to move into an all black neighborhood if she were to return to the States.

2 ( +6 / -4 )

The whole problem is that Naomi is being selective about what 'cause' she jumps behind

Exactly. Choosing causes that are relative to her, and not also addressing every other issue in the world equally, shows her opinion to be entirely hypocritical and devoid of meaning.

-1 ( +5 / -6 )

You take politicians seriously??

I said, I’ll listen.

-3 ( +2 / -5 )

as in the case of the Atlanta shooting, had ZERO support for being labeled a hate crime

It's 100% a gun crime. Those semi autos need to go. Or at least need very strict registration like with fully automatic machine guns (and none have ever been used in a mass shooting)

0 ( +4 / -4 )

Of course, people with anti-white agendas will try to talk up "hate crimes" that fit their needs, even if, as in the case of the Atlanta shooting, had ZERO support for being labeled a hate crime from both the local police, and the FBI. Zero. Yet, the media persists, and Naomi jumps on the (extremely selective) bandwagon just in time!

Using 2019 FBI statistics — the most recently available data — you, too, Naomi, can compute black and white perpetrators of hate crimes as a percentage of men 18 to 44 years old in their populations. The black rate was 40 percent, 76 percent and 303 percent HIGHER than the white rate for hate crimes against the Asian/Pacific Island, Latino and LGBTQ communities respectively.

Even more troubling, black rates for overall, general "hate-crime" assaults against any race, ethnicity or sexual orientation were 94 percent higher than whites, as a percent of their numbers in the population.

Sadly, I expect you'll go back to playing tennis before you bring these indisputable, if inconvenient, facts into the conversation. Too bad, because were you to do so, you might make even more of an impact.

2 ( +7 / -5 )

Japan wouldn’t exist in its current form without the West

Yes and Africa wouldn't exist either since slavery was such a good thing. Also the west really helped out Native Americans. Without white Europeans they would not have discovered the benefits of alcohol and Smallpox.

-2 ( +4 / -6 )

Why should she? You gotta pick your fights.

I don’t think you understand. If she doesn’t address every issue in the world, all at once, giving each issue an equal time except for the ones that are “more” equal, it means her opinion is less than meaningless.

3 ( +8 / -5 )

Wow, looks like I'm late to the party!

Does Naomi want to highlight the way Koreans are treated in Japan? Or Chinese are South East Asians?

Why should she? You gotta pick your fights.

-6 ( +1 / -7 )

I don't take the girl that serious because she's not a politician

You take politicians seriously??

8 ( +8 / -0 )

so she's allowed to have her opinions and be the person that she wants, doesn't affect my life one way or another and I don't take the girl that serious because she's not a politician, she is an athlete and that's it. Now if she gets into politics and can actually legislate into law to make a change, she's got my attention.

But we should take your opinion seriously?

1 ( +4 / -3 )

We criticize China but still buy our Chinese-made phones.

True, but that is totally different, won't even get off of a tangent about China, there's so much to criticize about that country and its leadership it would take all day, but as I have stated before, Osaka is young, very naive still on many of the issues and I think to a certain extent it's ok because she's still mentally growing, so she's allowed to have her opinions and be the person that she wants, doesn't affect my life one way or another and I don't take the girl that serious because she's not a politician, she is an athlete and that's it. Now if she gets into politics and can actually legislate into law to make a change, she's got my attention.

0 ( +5 / -5 )

she doesn’t seem to exposed to news where Black females assault and kill Asian immigrants.

As a black person, she clearly bears responsibility for the actions of other black people, and therefore her opinion holds zero validity. Right?

0 ( +6 / -6 )

She sure moves back and forth between the various oppressed groups quite smoothly as events dictate.

This is very true.

5 ( +8 / -3 )

If a white person speaks out against other white people's racism, they don't get called hypocrites. Nor does a straight person who points out other people's homophobia.

Naomi Osaka isn't responsible for what other people of colour do just by being half black. That is even if it were true that most hate crimes against Asians are committed by people of colour (52.5% of all hate crimes in the US are committed by white people, so I don't know where that information comes from to begin with).

It would be great if many Japanese stopped seeing themselves as the most oppressed people in the world. But it would also be great if Westerners in Japan did the same.

Excellent balanced post. Worth quoting the whole thing.

-1 ( +6 / -7 )

She sure moves back and forth between the various oppressed groups quite smoothly as events dictate.

You mean Black, Asian and female right?

Yeah, it’s really weird why she chose those groups. Can you imagine why?

-3 ( +5 / -8 )

Here for more downvotes, I guess...

I realised the data I presented earlier might lead to misunderstandings or misrepresentation.

According to a number of hate crimes reported by the CIA, 23.9% were committed by Black or African American people in 2019. The rest was White or 'ethnicity unknown'. Newer data seems hard to come by from sources other than far-right websites.

-3 ( +3 / -6 )

With her the “oppressor” can be only male or white and the “victim” must be Black, female, transgender or now, Asian.

she doesn’t seem to exposed to news where Black females assault and kill Asian immigrants. And definitely wont dare to comment.

1 ( +7 / -6 )

She sure moves back and forth between the various oppressed groups quite smoothly as events dictate.

Maybe she’s against, you know, oppression. And maybe she’s, you know, following the news.

You’re fond of saying “all _____ matter”

If I choose a cheese sandwich for lunch today it does not equate that I suddenly dislike all other sandwiches.

-1 ( +4 / -5 )

To be fair, Naomi Osaka is much more likely to be targeted for being black rather than Asian for ignorant Americans. That came off racist which was not my intent. It is what it is and people see what they see.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

@ Happy Day Just curious, who was it who called it the China Virus or Kung Flu unleashing all the hate? Who? Democrats? If you don’t remember it is well documented on video. I’ll give you a hint. He is in Mar a Lago cooking up more ways to divide America

-5 ( +5 / -10 )

By the way, I appreciate and admire Naomi Osaka sporting prowess, achievement, and respect Naomi Osaka opinion.

I question accountably of leveraging the power of social media to pursue a pollical agenda without the mandate of public office.

-4 ( +3 / -7 )

She sure moves back and forth between the various oppressed groups quite smoothly as events dictate.

Ha, touche. Very true.

0 ( +9 / -9 )

She sure moves back and forth between the various oppressed groups quite smoothly as events dictate.

6 ( +14 / -8 )

Not a criticism, Strangerland.

Naomi Osaka has every right under the constitution to openly and actively voice an opinion.

It is the turbocharging effect afforded by the platform of social media granted to sports celerity that I question.

Which is just another opinion.

However has little impact, since, may I suggest, we are both just everyday people going about our business.

-2 ( +3 / -5 )

You see everyone's a winner.

Of course you have to become a gifted top class tennis professional.

I'm going tiggywinks with my lawyer, the sky's the limit, both agree we are in the wrong profession to change the world, if one can't kick a football, or wave a tennis racket.

-3 ( +3 / -6 )

The far right use terms like Hollywood, big tech,

That would be the left since they own the monopoly in those two sectors and since Hollywood has historically made atrocious movies in the past built on racial stereotypes which have lead to misunderstandings and ill-informed commentaries about Asians, they do bear a significant responsibility to change those perceptions and this is nothing new to Hollywood, the media and most recently Big tech.

etc as memes for their base knowing they'll knee jerk react to them, intentionally distracting from the reality it's the bigots in the far right base who discriminate against minorities

No, it's not even a far-right thing, racism is not a black or white, conservative or liberal phenomenon. Again, look at Hollywood and the media and its advertisers.

0 ( +7 / -7 )

-3 ( +5 / -8 )

I mean, it is a good gesture but I am honestly not sure what it is going to take to fix these kinds of pervasive issues in America. It seems almost an inherent facet of American culture at this point. Still, it's always better to make whatever stand you can to support a cause you believe in and is obviously an issue that strikes very close to home.

Also, lots of whataboutism here. Just because someone doesn't speak out about every possible social ill in the world does not invalidate their position, nobody could conceivably manage to do that.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

The question is not necessarily defined within the gifted tennis professional that is Naomi Osaka.

To be ranked at number 2, focus is maintained on coaching training.

So, the commercial element is assigned to advisers.

Naomi Osaka has a measurable sports leadership class value.

If required, commercially through political imaginary and endorsement, political activism, the focused monetization of political economic value within digital media.

Fan-bases Twitter subscriptions, plus the necessity to mediate, expand a conception to/of financial agenda pursuing/mediating the political capital.

Base line fame, public awareness, sports excellence, equals public identification, thus political capital.

-4 ( +1 / -5 )

I guess she needs to look into the mirror as 85% of asian hate crimes are done by BLACKS. Maybe she should complain to the BLM movement.

5 ( +15 / -10 )

Amazing that when someone uses their celebrity status to speak out against racist hate crimes against Asians in America, the usual people will come out of the woodwork to do their best to divert and deflect attention away. As per usual, they will attempt to shift the discussion to Japan's racism. Shows you the true colors of these people. She is speaking out against anti-Asian hate crimes in America. Absolutely nothing to do whatsoever with racism in Japan or any other country, so please stop doing this people.

Pointing out the astounding hypocrisy of someone like Osaka, who only selectively speaks out on racism depending on the financial risk, is important.

Osaka failing to acknowledge the worst offenders by far being the black community is also important.

-3 ( +10 / -13 )

I am not so sure if she is really affected at all. Probably it is not an anti-Asian hate in general, but more some wild resistance or the feeling to have to do anything against anything Chinese, caused by severe economic and military rivalry as well triggered by the corona virus source theory. The problem is, that an average American can’t correctly estimate if a person is really Chinese or from another part of Eastern Asia. That’s not an excuse anyway, but an explanation. Many people from other regions in Asia are simply not affected I guess, because that would also hit people from Israel, India or Saudi-Arabia for example, no, I really think their hate is directed against China only.

-5 ( +2 / -7 )

Trump is partly to blame with his China virus talk. Stirred the pot even more...

-8 ( +7 / -15 )

Stick to playing tennis, it’s what your good at

Not surprising that right wingers whinge about their free speech being 'canceled' while at the same time trying to cancel the free speech of someone with a different perspective.

If people in sports are criticized for being vocal about issues, if 'Hollywood' stars are criticized for being vocal about issues, then shouldn't 'entertainers' like Tucker Carlson and Hannity also be criticized? After all, Fox attorneys claim they shouldn't be taken seriously by reasonable people, after all they're just on air to entertain. Or should they be canceled?

-7 ( +6 / -13 )

Wow. The alt-right are out in force in the comments today!

Apparently speaking out against racism is a terrible thing now, because it highlights the racism and that apparently creates division? Or something? I find the logic hard to follow tbh.

Then again, there seem to be a large number of people who will attack Naomi Osaka no matter what she says or does... I wonder why?

ducks the incoming downvote storm

-6 ( +9 / -15 )

She is a hypocrite on 2 points; First, she handles acute racism in Japan with kid gloves because she knows where that sweet sponsorship cash comes from.

No she doesn't. She's been vocal about racism in Japan on multiple occasions. The righties here hate it when she does that too.

-9 ( +10 / -19 )

Naomi has maturity beyond her years.

A wonderful role model for every sportsperson, regardless of ethnicity or gender.

-7 ( +6 / -13 )

If we had to explain that within 'Asia' most countries hate other asian countries (JapanKorea, KoreaJapan, Everyone China, etc, etc) it just makes things messy, keep it simple.

Yes, racism in another part of the world means she needs to shut the hell up about racism in the country she was raised in. It's a disgrace that she doesn't accept that racism in America is justified due to racism existing in Asia. Right?

-3 ( +8 / -11 )

I wish athletea would do less of the SJW thing and concentrate on playing sports instead.

Yeah, how dare she get to have an opinion like you, and not just be a one-dimensional tennis player on TV. Damn celebrities, thinking they're people.

-5 ( +8 / -13 )

as it has already been established by the police that it was not a racially motivated crime?

Yeah, because if there is anything the past year has shown, it's that the authorities have a handle on racial issues and how they work, right?

-7 ( +6 / -13 )

Sports celebrity, combined with an ability to leverage commercial branding to define, thus at will procure/pursue a political platform enhanced through the depth/breaths of social media, is blurring the line politics and sporting excellence.

All allowing Naomi Osaka to pick choose at will, to an audience, the usage of the tools of a political communications system. intrinsic and mandated though democratic process.

It’s unsettling.

However outside of competition, freedom of speech/expression demands that Osaka has the right to express an opinion, political or otherwise.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

It is great to know that she cares alot about american issues. But I have never heard her fighting for her father land which is s#$t hole. And a lot of abuse and strive going on over there.

-4 ( +4 / -8 )

I'm just glad sticks and wooden planks can be found on the streets of San Francisco. Some Asian grannies can give as good as they get.

-3 ( +3 / -6 )

If people loved Asian people as much as they love bubble tea, anime, mochi, sushi, matcha etc...

To be honest, I don't think people who love eating and enjoying those things are the sort of people who would verbally and physically attack Asians on a whim.

Tom:

Funny, watching YouTube many of the attackers on elderly Asians seem to be African-American though maybe they're not all American.

I don't know the figures, but yeah, not all the attackers are white. Not by a long shot. They include blacks and Hispanics.

awomde:

Try being a black person in China, Korea (and even Japan) ... Asians know how to do race hate with the best of them

I'm not going to pretend that ugly racism doesn't exist in these countries, but come on, open your eyes, do black people get verbally and physically abused and killed on a similar scale. Show us proof or stats. You're delusional.

0 ( +4 / -4 )

It’s been established that the shooter had a sex addiction

Yes by this person:

A Facebook page appearing to belong to a Georgia sheriff's office spokesman who is helping to investigate the recent massage parlor slayings promoted a T-shirt with racist language about China and the coronavirus last year.

(News quote)

She has been in a standup morning chorei mettings with the whole staff where her Japanese shatcho launches into racist tirades about korean people while she is standing there.

Which company is this? And is this story even real?

-5 ( +2 / -7 )

"If people loved Asian people as much as they love bubble tea, anime, mochi, sushi, matcha etc..."

That stuff is all Japanese stuff.

I like her stance but it doesn’t help to pigeonhole all Asians together.

5 ( +8 / -3 )

What is important is to raise awareness to Uyghur genocide. But this is probably will cost her some money, so probably she will keep silent.

8 ( +12 / -4 )

@himariyamadaくん

Yes to a lot of your pints other than gunned down (there are strict firearm laws to prevent this in Japan thankfully).

There are openly anti Korean, nationalist vans draped in the rising sun flags driving round shibuya/shinjuku at weekends spewing overt racism and hatred about korean people. My wife speaks fluent Japanese and so is assumed to be Japanese however this vile racist behavior that she has to see is frightening to her.

She has been in a standup morning chorei mettings with the whole staff where her Japanese shatcho launches into racist tirades about korean people while she is standing there.

Has she been physically harmed yet, no. Has she suffered racism, (like most asian non Japanese do in Japan) hell yes. Sorry to burst your bubble but racism is alive and well in Japan.

7 ( +13 / -6 )

Yet a growing number of Asian people are being assaulted every day in the Land of the Fee (sic). So very American to blame their problems on a foreign people.

-12 ( +3 / -15 )

PTownsendToday 07:41 am JST

as it has already been established by the police that it was not a racially motivated crime?

Some in the police offered one perspective.

Yes, the police officer interviewed the perp, and that was the confession of the guy who did it. Also, there was no evidence (friends, social media, etc...) of racial bias.

Now PTownsend wants to keep the narative going then that's on you. The police did a pretty good job of figuring this guy out but your woke take is better than theirs. Got it.

4 ( +8 / -4 )

She is a hypocrite on 2 points; First, she handles acute racism in Japan with kid gloves because she knows where that sweet sponsorship cash comes from.

Second, anti-Asian hate crime in the US is overwhelmingly suffered at the hands of the black community. This is backed up by FBI statistics.

She won't mention that, either.

9 ( +23 / -14 )

I wonder if hate against the Chinese Communist Party still acceptable. All messy started in Wuhan and Chinese authorities are to blame for cover-ups and lies. They are now even trying to whitewash covid narratives. Many of ordinary Chinese are innocent victims under overseas hate and homeland repression.

-4 ( +6 / -10 )

I used to think that Osaka for money but now I know why she choose Japan. Japan is much better than the west.

Osaka lives in Los Angeles, California.

9 ( +14 / -5 )

But she happily goes to pick up her dollars in the middle east. Where mostly Indian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi people get trampled on. And in China, where whole cultures get destroyed.

17 ( +26 / -9 )

"Imagine profiting/enjoying things that come from a culture and then attacking/diminishing the ethnic group that created it."

It looks like Osaka has been reading the comments section of the JT. A week ago a poster wrote the following:

"I like Japan, but Japanese people are like Sheep."

Not only was the post allowed to stand. It received 36 likes and no dislikes.

-10 ( +10 / -20 )

I like the athletes who actually concentrate on their sport, not the ones who choose to be part-time social justice warriors.

19 ( +29 / -10 )

Interesting dynamics to this issue, given her background, as several of the high-profile street attacks on Asians were by people of color: The Manhattan woman, by a guy from Yemen, the elderly Thai guy in SFO by a black teenager, the woman in Brooklyn by a gang of black teenage girls, etc.

This ain't a black and white issue, folks.

21 ( +25 / -4 )

It’s been established that the shooter had a sex addiction and an attraction to Asians and he also shot two non Asian male clients.

Usually the media along with the FBI dig up the killers past , citing evidence of white supremacy etc.

It appears the media and the woke have pounced on the opportunity to attack whitey.

However there’s no smoke without fire and Asians in the US have been true victims of hate crimes and you only need to go on social media to see who the perpetrators are.

8 ( +12 / -4 )

Well I guess her conscience is clear now, has anyone told her that racial issues are not just about white people hating?

Sshhh, that doesn't fit the narrative, let's just keep it at white people bad, it's far simpler that way for simple minds.

If we had to explain that within 'Asia' most countries hate other asian countries (JapanKorea, KoreaJapan, Everyone China, etc, etc) it just makes things messy, keep it simple. White people bad, oh and JT let's ignore the fact that the gunman wasn't white but a Syrian immigrant as well because that wouldn't work.

15 ( +25 / -10 )

@Henry, the Atlanta shooter was white, the Colorado shooter was Syrian.

28 ( +28 / -0 )

I wish athletea would do less of the SJW thing and concentrate on playing sports instead.

@ Boku Dayo - Clearly Naomi-chan IS "concentrating on playing sport". Have you seen how dominant she is? Pretty much unstoppable now.

Perhaps no-one, in any profession, should state their opinions on any social issues? They should "concentrate on their jobs". I guess in your mind only politicians have this right?

-12 ( +11 / -23 )

Good for Naomi-chan in standing up against the despicable anti-Asian racism that seems to be sweeping the USA, and parts of Europe. She and her family and friends have lived through this, so she has every right to speak up as a spokeswoman of the Asian community. Those that criticize her are complicit in the racism. Simple as that.

Tell them loud and proud, Naomi-chan - END THE ANTI-ASIAN HATRED, BIGOTRY, ATTACKS, VIOLENCE AND MURDERS. NOW!

West and East Coast of America.

If your were an American you'd know that's where large numbers of Asian-Americans live. Historically majority cultures have shown a modicum of acceptance to minority communities until the numbers of minorities increase.

The far right use terms like Hollywood, big tech, etc as memes for their base knowing they'll knee jerk react to them, intentionally distracting from the reality it's the bigots in the far right base who discriminate against minorities more than anyone else. Read JT posts for examples of the latter.

-17 ( +14 / -31 )

Naomi-san, do you notice where all the Asian hate is happening? West and East Coast of America. California especially. Asians are trying to get out as soon as possible.

If you really want to help Asians, please speak out against all the anti-Asian institutions, like Hollywood, media, Ivy League schools, Big Tech, and Democrats who do nothing but spew political narratives.
