It appears this game ended in a 0-0. No mention of problems occurring .... GREAT!

I have a sneaking suspicion that your "many say" actually translates to "the Chinese propaganda machine says".

i doubt if many western spectators or commentators on all-American networks are part of the Chinese propaganda machine. Unless the millions of non-Chinese awed by the Beijing Olympics are automatically designated by you to be Chinese propagandists.

the most spectacular use of bureaucracy to prevent people with grievances from being allowed to protest during the Olympics?

The British stepped up a notch by employing defense missiles on apartment rooftops. Demonstrators which devastated Tottenham earlier were nowhere to be seen during the London Olympics. Must've had something to do with extra heavy security.

@paulinusa worte

What a shame. 75 years later and still all this trouble

The rivalry between North Eastern Asian countries have been on going for at least five centuries.

The histories of Japan, China, and Korea are too entrenched for modern thought to apply.

As long the rivalry doesn't turn violent -- IT'S ALL GOOD!

My country nuked Japan twice, and I have always been treated with kindness here.

your country didn't suffer anywhere near the number of civilian casualties as china did.

"I was mainly treated with kindness when I lived in Japan for over a decade, despite being a "historical" enemy by being British (China and Korea take note)"

Well, take note of this, TigersTokyoDome: In spite of all the horrible things Japan did to Korea in the past and today denies doing, individual Japanese are still treated well in South Korea. No Japanese tourist or businessman need fear intimidation or threats from Koreans in Korea. On the other hand, it's the Japanese who hold demonstrations almost weekly these days crying "Kill All Koreans, Good Ones And Bad Ones", and "Korean Cockroaches Get Out Of Japan". The Japanese 'historically' idolize white Europeans, that accounts for a huge part of the 'kindness' you received there. As for other Asians in Japan? Forget it.

@Speed: In spite of what you say, many international events have been successfully held in China, including what many say was the most spectacular Olympics.

Most spectacular? Would that be the most spectacular use of oxygen tanks because the pollution was so bad that the athletes delayed arriving until just before their events? Or would that be the most spectacular use of bureaucracy to prevent people with grievances from being allowed to protest during the Olympics? I have a sneaking suspicion that your "many say" actually translates to "the Chinese propaganda machine says".

Enough said really. And true, as I was mainly treated with kindness when I lived in Japan for over a decade, despite being a "historical" enemy by being British (China and Korea take note).

The rage was against Japan's illogical decision to claim those islands belong to it, but not against Japanese.

It seems to me that Chinese have hard time to understand the meaning that sports give to the world.

I do not know much about Nanjing. During the Beijing Olympic, Japanese girl soccer team beat Chinese girl team easily in Shanghai. Local cheered J girl success. I hope Nanjing will cheer if J men team beat C men team again.

Media is inflaming with nationalist propaganda. If soccer teams kiss each other, they will not make any news. If they fight each other, it will keep circulating news paper or repeating TV news again. It is an art of making money.

Chinese cities should not be allowed to host any international sporting events. The poor air quality alone should be grounds for holding these matches in another country.

@Xeno23

Who would possibly think this is a good idea? What nimrod at the AFC scheduled this venue for this game?

Teams were drawn at random (within their seeding groups) to decide the make of each group in the group stages. After that, scheduling is simple - each team in a group plays the other 3 teams both home and away.

Jiangsu Sainty are the home team, so they play at home. Their home city is Nanjing. There will be a corresponding fixture played at Vegalta Sendai's home city of Sendai on May 1st.

@akkk1 I'm guessing you weren't in China for the "most spectacular Olympics". Also try cheering for the away team at a soccer match in Beijing (it doesn't even have to be a Japanese team) and see what happens.

These soccer players weren't yet born when this incident happened. Most are grandchildren of those who were even alive during that era.

The more I read about this the less respect I have for the Chinese government and the people there. This has absolutely NOTHING to do with these players.

Chinese cities (nor many of their people) are not yet mature enough to hold international events.

While sports is a platform for world peace.. this is not the time to open old wounds.

Who would possibly think this is a good idea? What nimrod at the AFC scheduled this venue for this game? Or was it maybe done on purpose? Not gonna end well...

Maybe hold the match in a neutral country then both teams' players and supporters will be at an equal disadvantage.

Politics and sport should never be mixed. Its even happened in the Hockey games between the Japanese clubs and the solo Chinese club were games were suspended. Just enjoy the game, be respectful to one another and don't let idiots ruin anything.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

Cancel match, don't dare go until goodwill reigns. High risk while grudge/conflicts fanned. and scapegoating for governing ills exploit ignorant's frustrations.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

AFP is a rag news source. JT should stop relying on them.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

AFP (and Japan Today) bear responsibility for the media-driven stirring of trouble here. If it weren't for sensational media headlines such as this it would just be a game of Asian champions league football with no historical significance. The media here are providing fodder for right-wing extremists.
