Adam Scott under fire after refusing to sack Tiger Woods' former caddy for calling golfer 'black a**hole'

Disgruntled, yes. Racist, who knows?

Tiger had his own problems as I mentioned earlier in another article. Williams is a rich man today. That's because of Tiger Woods. I think the comment was uncalled for. This is what happens when you are down though.

As an African-American nobody expected Tiger Woods or people like Venus and Serena Williams to infiltrate such prestigious sports and reach the top level.

In the end, it'll be a big So What? He met some women, cheated on his wife, Then again who hasn't. Fact: Tiger Woods is a golf legend even if you don't want him to be. Williams is an ungrateful SOB for quickly forgetting all that they have done together.

Of course, I pray that Tiger finds that strength, that energy again, and pumps his fist one more time. He knows that sport better than anybody else. Tiger's battle is not with other golfers on the course. It's inside him as he copes with physical changes in his swings.

I just want to see him get mad again. He always played his best when he was mad and coming from behind.

He did not refer to Tiger's race. He refered to the color of Tiger's butt and said he would like to stuff his trophy up that black butt, or something to that effect. I am pretty sure Tiger's butt is in fact the skin tone we call black.

Its a slow news week, and the press is shamelessly making things up again.

Williams' words were certainly tasteless, but they were not racist. Tiger is not racially black anyway. He is Cablanasian. His color is black and his butt follows suit I am sure. My butt is white, and to the question of if this racist allegation has any credence, my lily white butt it does! The media is out of control and shameless.

-4 ( +6 / -9 )

the reason why it is considered racist is because williams, or any other person, would have normaly just said, "shove it up his a#se." but using the adjective pushed it in the realm of racism. is he a racist? probably not but he did make a racist comment.

I did think that he said something much worse. I would have to say that as an African american American, that American media sometimes reaches too far sometimes and they are good and getting peoples blood going. Its definitely not cool at all what the guy said but for him to be banned from being hired is kind of ridiculous. I mean he apologized publicly. I'm sure Tiger wasnt as hurt as much as many reading about it. Also, the dude was sacked. Who wouldn`t have derogatory terms for a person who fires you if you dont agree with the termination. Its just that Tiger was more Proffesional about the situation.

In Australia they are still a little behind on cultural awareness compared to other countries so what the dude said might be ok there, like that comedy group that impersonated the J5 in black face. The only person that was really offended was an american.

1 ( +4 / -3 )

Unless you sun bathe in the nude, most peoples butts are lighter than the rest of their body. Mine is the same.

That is a tough call as far as racism or not. I am sure he did not mean it.

Al Stewart

So Al you think Australia is a little behind on cultural awareness hey? Just goes to show how far behind your cultaral awareness is then doesnt it considering Australia has some quite strict racism laws. Much stricter than Japan or the US, but hey keep up the uniformed culturally unaware comments they are good for a laugh

-7 ( +2 / -9 )

I agree with Al Stewart in that Aussies and Kiwis are not as culturally sensitive, so maybe this can serve as something that they can learn from.

I agree with Al Stewart in that Aussies and Kiwis are not as culturally sensitive, so maybe this can serve as something that they can learn from.

Oh definately we Aussies and kiwis are so backward, by the way when did segregation end in your country. Hilarious comment from a person whose country would have to be one of the most culturally backward nations in the world.

Spidapig - I have explained it to u twice, and u have ignored my explanation twice. Also I never referred to you as racist.

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

Readers, enough of this sniping at each other. Focus your comments on the story and do not address each other unless you are willing to be civil.

Stevie...in all honesty not many people would even know your name if it hadn't of been for Tiger. He was your money printing machine who helped you to become N.Z's top money earning sportsman for several years. Your passion is racing cars......who helped to finance that little hobby? Please do yourself a favor and just carry Scotty's bag and feed him the yardages and try to keep the sandtrap shut.

Steve Williams received a mock award Friday night for "Celebration of the Year" for his TV interview after Adam Scott won the Bridgestone Invitational. That was the day Williams said it was "the best win of his life," despite being on the bag with Woods for 13 majors. At an awards party filled with banter, Williams said of his interview, "It was my aim to shove it right up that black a------."

To me, its more like a regrettable comment instead of a racial one. He just pointed out where he wanted place that award. If he had left out the word black...this probably wouldn't have made the news.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

The article does not mention the "slur" it is talking about (strange journalism), and from the readers comment I gather it is something about stuffing things about somebody black butt ---- where is the racism in that? Seems to be the remark would be just as polite or impolite if is a white, pink, yellow, green or blue butt.

Isn´t this eternal screeming about racism getting old?

0 ( +3 / -3 )

WilliB - don't you just hate it when people hold you accountable for the things you say?

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

Don't you also hate the hypcisy when a news paper can refer to so done as a black something, yet if someone's says stick this up his black something it's instantly called racism. Seems we are just gonna have to ban the word black to remove any confusion, would hate to be accused of racism for using the word in the wrong context.

-4 ( +2 / -6 )

IMO people need to stop this things about race, i don’t care what anyone call me, hey, i am Latin American, and if anyone call me Latino!, why I need to care or think is races? Why black get angry when anyone call then black? I mean what color are they black? Black! Right!?! if anyone judge me because of my cultural background then to me that person is more ignorant and have less class than what they thing, why some white think they are better than other race is beyond me. Maybe because they been raping and looting other country since the begging of time?

but so who care!!

let's everyone live happy in this little planet!!

those who talk about Racist and make law to protect the people of other race that is not they own are the real Racist!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

The whole point l am trying to make is this, where do we draw the line? It's ok to use in some context but not others, where would you suggest we draw the line.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

The only thing Williams is guilty of here is being a knucklehead...hoser,you are being way too precious

0 ( +2 / -2 )

calm down - If u read my comments on the previous story, You'd see thats exactly what I said. My issue is with certain others who refuse to see any problem with Williams remarks which were preciously out of line. Im glad to see you preciously changed your tune since just yesterday when you said Tiger should just laugh off a racist insult. Good to see you've had time to think about it and do a big ol 180.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

I disagree with the statement that Aussies and Kiwis are culturally insensitive. They are very culturally sensitive with respect to the indigenous population that their ancestors displaced in order to establish the myth that both countries are "Anglo-Saxon cultures".

But with respect to other cultures, screw that, they are treated as beneficial parasites.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

Neojamal,

Your comment has me very curious, so how exactly do Australians and new zealanders treat other cultures as beneficial parasites?

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

As an African-American nobody expected Tiger Woods or people like Venus and Serena Williams to infiltrate such prestigious sports and reach the top level.

You are obviously too young or too brainwashed to know names like Lee Elder or Arthur Ashe.

Woods himself always points out he also has Asian and even Native American blood.

Is Tiger's ex caddy also a bit of a cad? Yes. Is it the end of the world? No.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

@Spidapig24

They have little interest in their cultures but nonetheless allowed to immigrate and provide financial input into the economy.

I think that Australia has however, done quite well to encourage a melting-pot culture in the mass media. New Zealand on the other hand is quite behind. I realized that there is a sizable Asian population in the Shaky Isles but their cultures are virtually ignored in the media except as a source for snide racial remarks and jokes.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

Back on topic please. The subject is the remark made about Tiger Woods by his former caddy.

South Island back in 2007,I did not get the opportunity to explore the north because I was on a business trip.

Steve williams spoke the truth, he spoke about how he felt and used a word to describe the colour of the place he wanted to insert the trophy, all you PC correct bunnies need to get a grip. It was at an awards dinner where there were many light hearted speeches with lots of humour and many people laughed apparently.

And besides does anyone really know what happened between steve and tiger, or how their relationship really was?

And who made who, did tiger make steve williams rich or was it the other way around, notice tiger has won nothing since him and steve parted ways but steve has caddied for a winner since they parted. Maybe it is steve who has the talent.

Kiwis and aussie have lots of cultural sensitivity, ask either one of them what they think of the english.

1 ( +4 / -3 )

This guy didn't complain one bit when Tiger Woods was paying this guy's health insurance, salary, and etc.

NO CLASS SCUMBAG

This guy's a complete a hole, and Adam Scott should fire his butt.

0 ( +3 / -3 )

Australia and New Zealand have a derogatory humor, it constantly is misinterpreted. This story is nothing. To condem anyone for a throw away crack, is crackers. The number of times I have been refered to in a derogatory manner apparently for laughs should be made into a court case? Eg The dude carried his bosses bag and advised him what club to use...there are 100 unsavory jokes there alone.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

Low class... why even hire an old fart caddy..

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

Steve Williams needs to just shut up. He is hurting his current employer, Adam Scott, with his stupid comments. He is paid to carry a golf bag and became famous -- and rich -- only because he was fortunate enough to be hooked up with the greatest golfer of all time. He needs to lose his arrogance and realize how lucky he is and could be gone tomorrow from the tour, and no one would miss him.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

What a bum, does not deserve his job.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Tiger Woods would be actually loving this. All this is deflecting from what the media would have been saying - we all know what that would have been.

It is almost like his old mate Steve is doing his a** a favour!

0 ( +1 / -1 )

The comment was racist because Williams felt the need to refer to his race while spouting the vulgarity. Had he not intended the comment to be racist, he would have just used the vulgarity. In actuality, Steve Williams is the a**hole here. (Note that I used no racism in my comment, and yet my meaning was still extremely clear. Are you paying attention, Steve?)

1 ( +2 / -1 )

You guys still banging on about all this rubbish. jeez loueez, must be a slow week for sports news.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

If we're going to pretend race doesn't matter, then it shouldn't need to be said. If a guy is an @$$hole, it shouldn't matter that he's black or white, just that he's an @$$hole.

As far as Williams himself, he's the real @$$hole, he had a nice easy job, made a lot of money, and instead of thanking Woods for the employment, he calls him a name.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

I understand news stories that try to provide a bit of decency, but writing about Williams' comment without directly quoting Williams seems silly. According to AP, at a caddies' awards roast in Shanghai on Friday, Williams referred to an earlier TV interview in which he said Adam Scott's win was the best win of his life, saying, "It was my aim to shove it right up that black a**hole."

It's hard to evaluate his conduct without knowing exactly what he said.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

cracaphat - Unless you're one yourself, I'd rather hear the accuracy of that comment from an actual Aborigine.

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

Tiger made that man a ton of money when he was caddie. He's a loser that should shut his mouth and get on with his job

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Tiger woods used to be great, He lost all my respect when he cheated on his wife.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

bah humbug! Steve Willams was referring to Tiger as the black @$$hole to avoid confusion with the white "@$$hole" : Phil Mickelson, well actually I believe" pricck" was the preferred nomenclature in that case, but nonetheless the confusion was avoided as it was very clear which "@$$hole" Williams was referring too! ;-) I am sure Tiger's ex -wife agreed with the Williams assessment.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Steve Williams is very rich because of Tiger Woods. Whatever happened between them that caused Williams to be fired doesn't change that fact. Williams would have been best advised to take his huge bundle of money and keep his mouth shut. The whole notion of a caddy acting like a prima donna is ludicrous.

The so called 'racist' comment isn't racist because it isn't even true. Wood's isn't black. Even if he was black, calling a black person a black person is only racist if you equate it with the n-word; which of course no one does. The pejorative adjective is a matter of opinion that I would guess he ex-wife might have used more than once in reference to her former husband.
