Nostalgia time. As a 9-year old in Glasgow, 1964 was a time of great wonders. The Forth Road Bridge opened, bullet trains started in Japan, and there were TV broadcasts of the Olympics via satellite (with a very catchy tune*). I wouldn't have believed that 16 years later I got to ride those trains regularly, and swim in that pool during many lunch times.

Judo was introduced during the 1964 Summer Games in October [ ! ] and the country was humiliated when a foreigner won in the Open class.

Tanges National Stadium is a masterpiece indeed.

"....and the country was humiliated when a foreigner won in the Open class."

There's nothing "humiliating" about doing one's best in world-class competition and winning the silver. The supremacist attitude of the Japanese toward this event reminds of the Nazis' attitude toward Jesse Owens taking the gold at the Berlin Games.

When you’ve no clue about the background silence remains :)
