Organisers are looking at coating pavements with a substance to reduce the surface temperature and making sure there are trees to provide shade for competitors and spectators alike, Koike said.

Why don't they do that already in the rest of the city for the people who actually live and work here and pay municipal taxes?

".....e-coli bacteria more than 20 times higher than permitted -- apparently brought about by unseasonably heavy rain."

And yet swimming has always been banned there due to dirty water, regardless of "unseasonably heavy rain."

Filters or not, the idea of swimming in Odaiba Bay in mid-summer is just disgusting.

"Everything is going very smoothly and I can clearly say that most of the competition venues are on track and they will be completed as scheduled."

Yeah at the expense of the rest of the major projects around the country that have in many cases literally been put on hold due to a lack of workers!

e-coli is caused by fecal and other types of organic matter in which the bacteria can grow. I doubt that that was caused by "unseasonably heavy rain" unless that's a euphemism for "our sewers can't handle the volume of water so they overflowed and it's just like Rio -- enjoy Joe Tanaka's dinner from a few nights ago!", or there is a lot of farm land in the middle of Tokyo and it's run-off from that.

In any case, there is no word at all about the sub-contractors and human rights abuses going into making this "on time".

The original "on track" would have been the stadium seeing some high-profile use at the Rugby World Cup next year. This has been presented as a "never mind" type outcome, but once the Olympics are over, the stadium won't really be needed and will probably only take business from other existing stadia. It would have been good to get two international tournaments out of it, not just one.

The world needs to stop lining the pockets of the corrupt IOC

Same opinion to oldman_13. IOC is quite a private association the whole world supporting, for the sports event I'm nothing to be against, but just to know how much IOC take from every venues (each 4 years) isn't really fair the money produced to them. IOC should help at all cost (means money here) to make a successful event in every host city(supported by her country). At this point, to see what happened to Rio or Barcelona, I don't think IOC helped, money going somewhere corrupted amongst the top-leaders. Some other event to replace IOC is what decent citizens should envisage. And it's the time to think about!

Not even close, the new stadium is replacing the old national stadium which was used to host numerous international and domestic events. It will be well used after the Olympics are finished.

The games should be held in October like the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, Don't think the summers have gotten any cooler!
