21 close contacts linked to South African Olympic athletes with COVID-19

Good to see the measures are working to trace Covid. There’s absolutely no way the Olympics will be a super spreader as some fear.

Because as the article stated " close contacts ". with those people who tested positive need an additional test.

In other words, because they came in close contact with a positive it warrants an additional test. Does it makes sense?

According to the organizers, all of the close contacts are also part of the South African soccer team. With most believed to be players rather than staff, the situation raises concerns about the impact on the opening game and the rest of the tournament.

And who is South Africa due to play in its first game on Thursday... yep, Japan.

The term "close contact" is not clear, but even members of the same team that had trained with the infected players were not always considered as close contacts.

Regardless, the key is to test every one in the Olympic bubble daily as a minimum.

No, tests do not work like that. There would be no added value for an extra test done immediately after the usual one for example, just increase the likehood of a false positive. Having a higher risk of being infected do not make extra tests justified, the playbook is a bad replacement of the real recommended measures, dilute into being worthless for economical and practical considerations.

Preventive measures based on sound science depend on vaccination, testing and proper isolation, if athletes can choose to remain unvaccinated, tests are done by themselves and they are only semi-isolated for a short period that means cases are inevitable for the duration of the event.

Besides of all that Olympics and related crap, but such a team needs an own video analyst? Come on, that’s not funny, but very suspicious. What’s in the luggage of that guy, that certain something for sale in the streets at evening? This is the real answer.

Because the daily tests on athletes and IOC staff are not PCR.

They do saliva tests daily, which are not as accurate as PCR, but cheaper and quicker.

So if the saliva test is positive, or (as in this case) there is a close contact to a positive, then they do the more accurate PCR test.

Good thing Bach and Suga have given their seals of approval on this safe Olympics.

If it wasn’t for their, who knows how messed up this event would have been!!

As the Olympics go on so does the number of COVID cases increase. After the Olympics the numbers will continue to increase.

There are different types of tests. Faster, but less accurate and slower, but more accurate. I suspect the slower ones probably cost more too, but I honestly do not know. I've never been tested and haven't seen a bill.

Someone who tests negative in PCR test will remain uninfectious 6 hours later even if infected, thereby protecting other athletes.
