Yeah, because the vaccinated foreigners would pose a threat.... to the extreme insecurity and inferiority complexes of the locals.

in any case, money will ALWAYS safety with these clowns, and the fact that it’ll increase our national health insurance later doesn’t matter to the companies which will be paid directly through the Games, unless there are no spectators. Japan should not be allowed to hold international events.

Money first, safety second.

It's almost as if these executives are in competition to produce the most ludicrous hyperbole.

No vaccines for the voluntees I hear, just pack’em in collect the coin

And these idiots want Emergency powers? Really less testing equates to a safe number? Then blame the foreigners who are except for lockdown while allowing large groups of people to congregate together? I mean how stupid goes this government have to be before someone says...you are idiots.

I wish J-Gov would stick it to the IOC and have an Olympics with no spectators. How would that look on TV? Not very good.

I am almost certain that the J-Gov is being pressurred to do this even though it isn't being said publicly.

Tokyo metropolitan schools are going to send 810,000 junior, middle and high school students to fill the empty seats at Olympic venues.

https://news.yahoo.co.jp/articles/bf543bbf3f63aee23c084032bbc546e3a4883f26

According to the article, the plan was hatched before the pandemic; those in charge apparently see no reason to cancel it now.

Japan is leaning toward allowing domestic spectators at the Tokyo Olympics despite the COVID-19 pandemic, media reported on Wednesday, with organizers planning to monitor the movements of foreign media to prevent spread of the virus.

Yeah because it’s the dirty, vaccinated foreigners that pose the threat - not the largely unvaccinated locals.

I despair with this country at times.

10 ( +11 / -1 )

I believe that was the plan all along: Extend the SoE until 20 Jun to bring case numbers down to a level that would seem to somehow justify allowing spectators. After all, they wouldn't want to have to forgo all of the ticket revenue, right?

9 ( +11 / -2 )

Given that anything between 50 and 80 percent of surveyed people have expressed a wish for the games to be further postponed or cancelled, it makes you wonder who’s going to come even if they do permit domestic spectators.

The organizers have not yet justified their supposed bubble and now they are searching for ways to make more holes in it?

8 ( +9 / -1 )

So no checks on movement of Japanese media? Do they somehow have special superpowers that stop them transmitting the virus, different from overseas media? The problem with the Olympics is the massive, unnecessary extra movement and mingling between all hundreds of thousands of parties. It's not rocket science.

I don't give a stuff which way they are leaning, how much air is being sucked between teeth, what they are considering, or urging, and what the atmospheric pressure is. What a dumb piece of non-news.

7 ( +8 / -1 )

Yes but no but yes but no but maybe and leaning and thinking and discussing and meeting again...

I give up trying to understand the Japanese mind!!!

7 ( +8 / -1 )

In all honesty, don't be surprised if you see tickets being given away for nothing to encourage people to go.

Without spectators, the Olympics will be remembered for all the wrong reasons . . . . for years to come . . . in every replay.

Carrot and Stick.

Next week they'll announce Japanese Residents who attend Olympic events can collect a 'priority' vaccination booking card.

Or something very similar.

6 ( +8 / -2 )

Why not, may just as well throw the kitchen sink at it.

and how, may i ask will you select between the people who are already holding tickets ? Or shall we make it the geriatric games with only vaccinated elders ? What about us, no choice to get vaccinated, we are shut out?

Do we get a vaccination with a ticket maybe ? Or a ticket with a vaccination?

ridiculous the whole mess. Anyway infection numbers will go up, don’t bother

And now we know why this was done

Japan is leaning toward allowing domestic spectators at the Tokyo Olympics despite the COVID-19 pandemic

How desperate can you be to recover some of the losses from these Olympic games.

With basically no one vaccinated with both vaccines in Japan, how can you justify this “leaning towards” apart from only an economic view?

LDP and IOC priorities are very clear:

100% Economics

0% Public Health

2 ( +6 / -4 )

Oh look. Another flip flop decision by the Japanese Government. How very predictable.

fans, no fans, fans, SOE, no SOE, SOE fans, no soe fans, no…………

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Why take the risk or the liability? . . . if money is at issue, charge a nominal fee to see the events on television.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

I know 80% are against the games being held, yet I suspect that if spectators are allowed they will easily fill the stadiums. I hope not. I hope they are completely empty but somehow...

Like collect XYZ-points. We love collecting points although we will never actually use them, because they have such low value that even one billion points equals a lolly or so. Literally. Or they announce that get1億ポイント. Most people here will be crazy, despite not realizing it is in total.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Why would you allow domestic spectators over foreign ones? Shouldn't the criteria be people who've been vaccinated and recently tested negative? When they say "domestic spectators" does that mean Japanese born or does it include those who've become Japanese and those who hold Zairyū cards?

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Foreign spectators are already prohibited from the Olympics and Japanese may also be kept away from what organizers promise will be a sanitized "bubble" event to minimize contagion risk.

I knew that Japanese spectators will be allowed in, the don't want to come out now and say so as it may

draw widespread opposition even from the Japanese public, they are just waiting for the numbers to drop

below 100 to make the final announcement may be before the end of the month, the daily Tokyo numbers will be less than 100, Even the super infective indian strain will not cause the numbers to rise. An opportunity to spur the local athletes to medals and make the public forget about the ineptitude of the gov't cannot be missed.

0 ( +3 / -3 )

There are many people who want to watch the games and of course they've already sold the tickets, goes without saying that they're leaning towards having spectators so it must mean it's already decided

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Clearly the govt hasnt learned from their MULTIPLE mistakes with people travelling on holidays & Go To things, now they want a covid spike from the games themselves.....off the charts

This is ALL so so WRONG!

0 ( +3 / -3 )

What additional stupidity will we wake up to tomorrow? - It makes one wonder if its not be “too bad that Mori isn’t around anymore” to have run this entire fiasco further into the ground for the IOC.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

I am not surprise. We still have more than a month to go till the olympic happen and mass vaccinations sites are currently everywhere. Before the mass vaccination had started the numbers of vaccinated people where at around 8%. By the end of july we probably should at least be at around 30-40%. Should be enough to allow spectators in. While most watch the olympics at home, there had always been a small numbers which like to see it personally. While i am not a fan of the olympics, i can see how the officials finally have some small hope that they can finally allow some domestic spectators in. if even 10% were willing to see it, it still means millions of spectators. Is not bad news in my opinion.

Personally i find these games are a waste of money but we are already knee deep in this hole and is not like we can abandon it anyway after everything we went through. It has been a tough 2 years for many citizens. Games like these should help distract people for a bit.

LMFAO!!!!! Where is the logic???? Japan is leaning toward allowing domestic spectators at the Tokyo Olympics despite the COVID-19 pandemic, media reported on Wednesday, with organizers planning to monitor the movements of foreign media to prevent spread of the virus. First off Japan has a problem with getting COVID under control and they will allow Domestic spectators to the games, BUT monitor the movements of the foreign media WAITTTTTT. Japan before you allowed foreign media into the country my take was they had to have proof of their covid vaccination shots? If not why would Japan allow them in? If anything Japan you should monitor the domestic spectators that is the group that should be watched. I don't get it!! Now I can understand why this entire Olympic think is a joke!!!!

0 ( +2 / -2 )

The JOC & the IOC want this. Japan does not!

0 ( +1 / -1 )

More Japanese government officials and 2020 Tokyo Olympics organizers are in favor of holding the Games with domestic spectators as COVID-19 vaccines are rolled out and case numbers decline, the Asahi newspaper reported, without citing sources.

While news go viral, some overseas, all originates from this Asahi report with no reference to specific sources. I need follow-ups and cross-checking.

「五輪に観客」強気の政府 ワクチン接種拡大で勢いづく

https://www.asahi.com/articles/ASP686GP6P68UTFK00Q.html

I assume that the ultimate goal and defense line set by organizers is to hold the Games anyway, with or without spectators. "With spectators" option can be used as a decoy or bargaining chip to divert direct attacks from the Games. Like a carpet negotiation starting with a max price down to a "agreed", they wouldn't care much if they end up withdrawing into "no spectators" plan.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Great idea! JOC/LDP ‘*Shark-Jumping’! *@expat 5:33pm Now, that’s an event many here would pay to see!

- “the media is reporting on media speculation that the govt can soon disavow? Japanese "journalism" is "jumping the shark". -

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

I know 80% are against the games being held, yet I suspect that if spectators are allowed they will easily fill the stadiums. I hope not. I hope they are completely empty but somehow...

Around 50%, according to recent surveys

80% against the games being held wasn't even true, it's just spin.

Iirc 83% was the total of those wanting the Olympics cancelled and postponed.

Only 43% wanted the Olympics cancelled.

40% wanted the Olympics to push thru albeit at a later date.

14% wanted it to push thru as scheduled.

So 54% wanted the Olympics to push thru at that time that survey by asahi shimbun was done whenever it was

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Many news sites are sort of honest when doing a cite, stating the complete phrase 80% want the Olympics cancelled or postponed. Some are blatant and just say 80% are against the Olympics being held.

Whatever the case, the lumping of the two figures in one is spin to make it appear a great majority is opposed to the Olympics being held

Gods luv ya’ @AlfieNoakes 4:42pm, but is this a quote from “Peter O'Hanraha-hanrahan”?

Seiko Hashimoto is the current JOC president yet we agree: ‘forever youthful’ Seiko Matsuda may have been more suited. For that matter, anyone else with some backbone and common sense.

througou:

Infections have gone down, and vaccination rate has greatly increased.

I guess it depends on how you define 'greatly'.

Doubling from 2 to 4% of the population sounds a lot. But at that rate, I might not even get my vaccination this year.

Let's see now. Japanese athletes will be refreshed, not having to isolate, quarantine or stay within one building. There will be more Japanese athletes because they're the hosts. And now spectators will only be cheering for the Japanese athletes. Can we just give the gold medals to them now and get it over and done with?

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Don't go , boycott these games the sponsors and all who participate.

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

Time to invest in medical equipment and vaccines stocks. You will become so so rich!

Just wait until the SOE ends and the IOC/government announces that the Olympics are a go....... suddenly foreign spectators will be OK as well.

The Olympic ‘Spin’ continues: What a ‘coincidence’(?) this is being considered the same day this ‘news’ broke 6am this morning:

“U.S. eases 'Do Not Travel' advisory for Japan”

Perhaps Mr. Aso spent a little extra time ‘on his knees’ at G7 last week trying to get some extra concessions from the ‘others’?

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

Public perception of the games is going to change very quickly. The vaccines are being pumped out rapidly this month. Only days ago it was 500K vaccines a day and I just looked now and it was 1 million doses administered in the past 24 hours. The number of infected is decreasing daily. Tickets will be in high demand. Japan just might pull this off.

Japan leans toward holding Olympics with domestic spectators: report

Where is the surprise? We all knew it is going to be a quiet, well-behaved, and mostly televised basically domestic event. So all this cackling about this imaginary gigantic Olympic Corona wave was and is so silly.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

If I , young, strong, sexy and very smart gaijin get the vaccine by July the 5-th then fine do it with spectators.

-4 ( +0 / -4 )

Herd immunity is the best solution! Do it! Pack em in!!!

-5 ( +4 / -9 )

Yes, no, yes, maybe, consider, leaning towards (what??), and so on.

The typical flip-flopping concerning any and all aspects.

Make up your mind and make a firm decision!

Infections have gone down, and vaccination rate has greatly increased. Glad they updated their opinion based on the actual situation here in Japan.
