I believe that was the plan all along: Extend the SoE until 20 Jun to bring case numbers down to a level that would seem to somehow justify allowing spectators. After all, they wouldn't want to have to forgo all of the ticket revenue, right?

Given that anything between 50 and 80 percent of surveyed people have expressed a wish for the games to be further postponed or cancelled, it makes you wonder who’s going to come even if they do permit domestic spectators.

So no checks on movement of Japanese media? Do they somehow have special superpowers that stop them transmitting the virus, different from overseas media? The problem with the Olympics is the massive, unnecessary extra movement and mingling between all hundreds of thousands of parties. It's not rocket science.

I don't give a stuff which way they are leaning, how much air is being sucked between teeth, what they are considering, or urging, and what the atmospheric pressure is. What a dumb piece of non-news.

Like collect XYZ-points. We love collecting points although we will never actually use them, because they have such low value that even one billion points equals a lolly or so. Literally. Or they announce that get１億ポイント. Most people here will be crazy, despite not realizing it is in total.

Why would you allow domestic spectators over foreign ones? Shouldn't the criteria be people who've been vaccinated and recently tested negative? When they say "domestic spectators" does that mean Japanese born or does it include those who've become Japanese and those who hold Zairyū cards?

Foreign spectators are already prohibited from the Olympics and Japanese may also be kept away from what organizers promise will be a sanitized "bubble" event to minimize contagion risk.

I knew that Japanese spectators will be allowed in, the don't want to come out now and say so as it may

draw widespread opposition even from the Japanese public, they are just waiting for the numbers to drop

below 100 to make the final announcement may be before the end of the month, the daily Tokyo numbers will be less than 100, Even the super infective indian strain will not cause the numbers to rise. I am not surprise. We still have more than a month to go till the olympic happen and mass vaccinations sites are currently everywhere. Before the mass vaccination had started the numbers of vaccinated people where at around 8%. By the end of july we probably should at least be at around 30-40%. Should be enough to allow spectators in. While most watch the olympics at home, there had always been a small numbers which like to see it personally. While i am not a fan of the olympics, i can see how the officials finally have some small hope that they can finally allow some domestic spectators in. if even 10% were willing to see it, it still means millions of spectators. Is not bad news in my opinion.

Personally i find these games are a waste of money but we are already knee deep in this hole and is not like we can abandon it anyway after everything we went through. It has been a tough 2 years for many citizens. Games like these should help distract people for a bit.

I assume that the ultimate goal and defense line set by organizers is to hold the Games anyway, with or without spectators. "With spectators" option can be used as a decoy or bargaining chip to divert direct attacks from the Games. Like a carpet negotiation starting with a max price down to a "agreed", they wouldn't care much if they end up withdrawing into "no spectators" plan.

Iirc 83% was the total of those wanting the Olympics cancelled and postponed.

Only 43% wanted the Olympics cancelled.

40% wanted the Olympics to push thru albeit at a later date.

14% wanted it to push thru as scheduled.

So 54% wanted the Olympics to push thru at that time that survey by asahi shimbun was done whenever it was

Many news sites are sort of honest when doing a cite, stating the complete phrase 80% want the Olympics cancelled or postponed. Some are blatant and just say 80% are against the Olympics being held.

Whatever the case, the lumping of the two figures in one is spin to make it appear a great majority is opposed to the Olympics being held

Seiko Hashimoto is the current JOC president yet we agree: ‘forever youthful’ Seiko Matsuda may have been more suited. For that matter, anyone else with some backbone and common sense.
