despite all the barriers that they had to face

Barriers? Oh, like dodging doping tests and protocols, I guess.

These Olympics are "awesome" here just for the ultra nationalists.

Good on Russia btw.

Is it just me? When it comes to wording regarding the places these athletes took, say they "settled" for a bronze or any medal at all, is like saying they could have done better!

It's condescending to the winner!

All these athletes are busting their butts to WIN a medal and saying they settled for something less than gold is wrong!

while former world record-holder Regan Smith of the United States settled for the bronze at 58.05.

I guarantee she didnt "settle" for a bronze!

Wonderful news!

I don't understand the vitriol levelled at the athletes from the Russian-federation-whatever-they're-calling-themselves-now.

The Olympics haven't been about fair competition since...well, at least since 1988 when Ben Johnson doped his way to the 100m title...for a while.

Maybe the Russian-federation-whatever (etc) do it on a larger scale, but scratch any country which wins a lot of medals and you'll find something shady.

Swimming is an interesting sport. The athletes train very hard.

All of Alaska has but one Olympic-size pool
