Another misogynist in a position of power in Japan?! What a shocker!

-22 ( +9 / -31 )

"Olympig" ? Tell that to Naomi face to face and see how hilarious she'd find the joke.

-8 ( +11 / -19 )

"Olympig". Not many sharp tools running things here.

6 ( +12 / -6 )

What exactly is the "scandal" here? I mean come on, Tossing out ideas is now verboten? Give me break. PC culture run amok again.

18 ( +28 / -10 )

She would have jumped at the chance to be part of the Olympics. As others have pointed out, her only talent is being fat and loud. Its a role made in heaven for her.

25 ( +30 / -5 )

It's really not only Sasaki at fault here. The production agency that Naomi belongs to is also disgusting. Creating a cartoon character wearing garish costumes and forcing her to keep an unhealthy weight to fit this mold is disgusting. It's sad that she buys into this stuff to the detriment of her health. She was in a TV program years back when a doctor advised her about her diet and weight, but nope, she and her agency went full tilt crazy cartoon after that program.

18 ( +20 / -2 )

However, would posing as a cute plump pig really be that far from what Naomi-san has already willingly done repeatedly?

Yes. Because it's one thing for you yourself to make disparaging or humorously mocking comments about your own appearance, another thing entirely for someone else to do it to others about you.

Try it yourself sometime.

-8 ( +7 / -15 )

Sasaki-san's swinish sense of humor has landed him in society's sty. Now he's lost his tasty little Olympic gig and won't be able to bring home the bacon. There's a lesson to be learned here for male chauvinist pigs: Oink Oink!

-4 ( +6 / -10 )

Comparing a Human to a Pig is considered to be an INSULT in may cultures, in fact in some it is punishable.

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

I got news for all you folks here, if this guy needs to resign for this then guess what SO DO ALL OF US!!!

There isnt a single person posting here that hasnt said or thought something nasty, stupid!!!

Sure this guy was daft, even worked for DENTSU!!! But he just need to say sorry on this one.

Another thing, keep pushing cancel culture at your own risk, because THAT one goes after anyone, nothing to with left or right or anything......

My what a nasty world we all seem to be making for ourselves, what a mess!!

13 ( +17 / -4 )

After the Olympics clean house a bit more, time to move into Corporate-Japan.

The older generations aren't allowed to use the same words that younger people are. Get over it.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

"Naomi Watanabe who is a fashion icon in Japan and abroad"

Wow have they set that bar low.

12 ( +14 / -2 )

Mis step on his part, but not that outrageous given the circumstances, it is advertising after all. One would think more wacky ideas has been proposed and shot down.

Watanabe's group may have been outraged and rightfully so but I don't necessarily agree with canceling him 1 year after the fact.

8 ( +8 / -0 )

What’s wrong with these people? What a shame!!!

-5 ( +2 / -7 )

In yet another setback for the Japanese organizing committee of the Summer Games, Sasaki's announcement came after weekly magazine Shukan Bunshun reported Wednesday that he proposed last March an idea involving 33-year-old entertainer Naomi Watanabe, who despite being large-bodied, is a fashion icon in Japan and abroad, coming down from the sky as a pig as part of the Olympic opening ceremony.

Imagine how holier this country would be without the likes of Shukan bunshun, friday, Shunkan shincho etc.

The mainstream have decided to stick to fanning nationalism and mis-educating the public.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

The girl is cute, why all the hate. Just pathetic! And I gotta admit, even though she’s a bigger woman, the girl is beautiful, she can move, she’s definitely not lazy, she cares deeply about her appearance, why can’t you be large and beautiful? I’d date her, and she seems like she has a great sense of humor and a caring person. I guess people think personality doesn’t really matter anymore these days.

Sad.

3 ( +9 / -6 )

This is just sad - it is his job to have creative ideas and the first rule of a brainstorm session is that THERE ARE NO BAD IDEAS. I'm sure it was not meant in a derogatory manner, but he was genuinely thinking on how to integrate her best, especially given her approach towards being overweight. So OK, Olympig was not good, but maybe it could have been brought to something better and made into something useful. Instead it was cut to the ground and the person behind it unfairly punished.

6 ( +7 / -1 )

Creative chief is not creative at all. All dinosaurs must disappear.

-3 ( +3 / -6 )

Ahum !

he was with Dentsu so how could you expect any creative ideas from him at all. Which bright mind gave him that position. I wonder which of his ideas did make it into the ceremonies.

Miss Watanabe and her mother fought themselves up from a very difficult life and she is intelligent, professional, funny, creative, bilingual.. but.. only half Japanese, right Mr Sasaki ?

5 ( +6 / -1 )

Wow, just wow. They haven't learned anything, did they! First women who talk too much, now Olympigs. Are they just completely suffer from dementia or so? Don't they realise they are in the spotlights? One thing is thinking something for yourself, the other thing is saying it out loud. They really don't know how to take few deep breaths first, wait a bit if you're oyaji, take another deep breath just to be sure and then talk..

0 ( +6 / -6 )

I’d date her

Wouldn’t your wife be a bit upset? (It’s a joke for those of you who don’t understand it is from reading.)

3 ( +5 / -2 )

Sounds to me that Watanabe is realizing her comedic gimmick has worn thin and is looking to go a different route, one not based on fat flaunting. Problem is that she really has no other "talent."

Anyway, body shaming, of course, is wrong, but hypertension, diabetes and arterial plaque are not conditions to laugh at.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

Ex-Dentsu? He left there 18 years ago to set up his own agency Shingata - though no doubt the connection did not hurt. Did not last long in the job either, he was already a replacement for Mansai Nomura since Dec 23, 2020.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

the girl is beautiful, she can move, she’s definitely not lazy, she cares deeply about her appearance, why can’t you be large and beautiful?

In rare agreement with you on this.

3 ( +6 / -3 )

Since any utterance may be construed as an insult by some sensitive soul, we must all be completely silent.

5 ( +6 / -1 )

why can’t you be large and beautiful?

You can be but you still should lose weight when you are that size. Let’s not use euphemisms either - she’s unhealthily overweight and possibly obese.

Ask the vast majority of doctors. I agree with some medical professionals who think celebrating this should be seen in the same way as celebrating smoking or drinking a bottle of scotch a day.

No need to humiliate people like the idiot in this article. Just be honest about it.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

Tokyo 2020..ho hum.Yawn!!!!!!!!

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

@Mr Kipling, well said. You're spot on.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

-the Japanese organizing committee is trying to improve its image.

And doing an astoundingly bad job of it.

Maybe they could have kicked off by organising a school sports day. Anyone who made it through that could level up.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

You can be but you still should lose weight when you are that size. Let’s not use euphemisms either - she’s unhealthily overweight and possibly obese.

Yes, let's be serious: the science is out. She needs to lose weight asap or else she'll be setting herself up for a life of suffering from a bunch of bad health problems. She has a winning smile. I hope she can succeed in losing the fat stay healthy and keep her lovely smile.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

I don't justify nor find his idea funny. At the same time in reading the story I am wondering if bigetory is still allowed inside one's head. Some of his previous projects were successful or at least accepted in the end. Creativity tends to go extreme, often conflicting with dominant values, common sense or virtue. Censoring one's brains or brainwashing are art of totalitarianism.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Because it's one thing for you yourself to make disparaging or humorously mocking comments about your own appearance, another thing entirely for someone else to do it to others about you.

If you think that any of Naomi Watanabe’s image and stunts have been purely her own self-mocking, you have no idea how Japanese entertainment works. Watanabe has an agency full of people who toss around ideas no less stupid than Olympig, and they work with other media companies doing the same. Watanabe signed a contract, and relatively little of the image and creative content associated with her is truly her own.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

the 66-year-old said

That is all you need to know. Fortunately young Japanese men seem a league ahead of these dinosaurs.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

33-year-old entertainer Naomi Watanabe, who despite being large-bodied, is a fashion icon in Japan and abroad

Icon? Outside of Japan? I'd like to know where. Look, it's great she is successful but let's be real, the only talent she has is doing stuff using her fatness and it got old fast and that was quite a few years ago. If she weren't a TV 'tarento' people would be looking and laughing but for a different reason.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

She's on TV shows bragging about how much she eats so I'll go with her size being self inflicted and that is not a healthy thing to promote. She's a lard arse, I admire what she does and the fact she doesn't take herself seriously but I don't find in the slightest bit funny.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

If you think that any of Naomi Watanabe’s image and stunts have been purely her own self-mocking, you have no idea how Japanese entertainment works.

I stand corrected. I don't live in Japan, although I'm familiar with Naomi Watanabe's face and image from several visits there, so I had no idea that she was nothing more than a manipulated puppet whose every word and deed is dictated to her by her agency and which she has to follow, whether she likes it or not. What a mess of self-loathing she must be, at least in your view of it.

My point stands, and is at least partially validated by the resignation of the Olympic "creative chief" concerned.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

How pathetic and despicable people to make fun of others for their appearance, for idiots like these the world is that it is screwed

Same for the haters braying here..

0 ( +4 / -4 )

zzzzzz...

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Just can’t find still acceptable words that would avoid me to go directly to jail.....rofl

4 ( +4 / -0 )

She makes me feel ill.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

I think this goes down again to that issue of Political correctness, and who said what and to whom.

In Japan being skinny or anorexic means you are sexy as opposed to being Big and Beautiful(BBW).

I have dated Several BBW Japanese, but it goes without say, how much some of them endlessly mentioned to me their weight on a daily basis. It was ok for them to continuously mention it to me, but it was a huge fight if I did mention it too. Political correctness has a thin line for sure!

3 ( +4 / -1 )

Hiroshi Sasaki, head creative director for the opening and closing ceremonies of the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics, won't be missed.

An unnecessary ill mannered churlish slight, odious man.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

What does Naomi think about it?

1 ( +2 / -1 )

"I tend to joke often, so I said it just as something that slipped out of my mouth ... (the idea of Watanabe) wearing a cute pink costume and sticking her tongue out as an 'Olympig.' I thought that would make her look charming, but I was immediately reprimanded by male staff. I feel remorse," Sasaki was quoted as saying by the magazine.

Sounds more like the idea of someone who is neither creative or funny, more than a hateful or derogatory comment to me.

Cute word play pun there, joker. Kinda makes me want to see what he actually planned for the event. I'm sure it would have been a textbook carbon copy of every single past event in recent history anyway.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

No matter what Sasaki meant by that comment, the damage has been done, and most likely irreversible. Yuriko Koike called Sasaki's comments "extremely embarrassing,”

Well, I would call it not only embarrassing, but insulting and damaging to the credibility and behavior of the Japanese IOC.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Make the punishment for the crime; as well as losing his job, have Sasaki lowered down by crane with a pink nose cone on and the words “pig” written on him, cause that’s what he is. Won’t be cute, but THAT would be funny!

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

GW is quite right, and it's encouraging to see that he's received quite a few thumbs-up....I'm an old, overweight male and find it annoying that in otherwise tolerant and thoughtful Japan, making remarks about obesity is all too common. But the ultra-politically correct really ought to--as it were--lighten up....I confess that I gloated a bit when I read about this latest "scandal," as I heartily loathe the Olympics as a wasteful scam.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

"Olympig"

Hiroshi Sasaki, head/creative director for the opening and closing ceremonies seriously believed for one moment such a phrase would lead to some PR coup d'etat, win friends and influence sponsors?

Hiroshi Sasaki is a brainless liability, a fleckless embarrassment.

Blaming Naomi Watanabe, simply because Hiroshi Sasaki is a loud mouth fool?

Tax payers money has been thrown at Hiroshi Sasaki. Your money, my money.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

He wasn't lying or wrong at all, but the most obvious things don't need to be said outloud.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Naomi-chan has discovered she can monetize her appetite and has found a way to fame with her fat. I just hope she can quit and get another gig before her body breaks down.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

u_s__reamer,

You're better than such a comment.

Naomi-chan appetite, past or present cannot be held responsible for Hiroshi Sasaki stupidity.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Naomi Watanabe: "Look how fat I am! I'm super fat! Watch me while I eat 6 lbs of meat on television! I'll stuff myself into this leather outfit that shows of how incredibly fat I am!"

radical feminists/virtue signalers: "Go you grrrrl! Yeah! Body positivity movement! Big is beautiful!!!"

naive bystander: "Yeah, she's actually pretty fat..."

radical feminists/virtue signalers: "DIE!! HOW DARE YOU!!!! CANCELLLLLL!!!

All you can do is sit back and laugh!

0 ( +4 / -4 )

Bob, Naomi Watanabe daily dietary plan/consumption has little relevance here.

The costs to sponsors, globally is incalculable.

Politically, the more one focuses on “fat”, less the plus size will engage, to support more is less.

Or less is more?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Not all overweight obese people are fat from overeating. It can be DNA or a gland problem.

Japan is one of the least obese countries while America has been the number one for decades. Many serious problems with being obese.

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

Bob remember the word is Olympics.....anything other we all know the rules

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Yeah. Theres a thing called "per capita" and theres thing called "17th".

By golly, I swear to gosh those are real things!

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

This situation is way different than if she was a random woman who happens to be fat. This particular fat woman makes her living off of playing on the fact that she's fat in a self-deprecating manner. So someone making a joke that she herself would be guilty of making about herself is a non issue.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

He tried to josh light-minded to the spectators in the Tokyo games opening ceremony .

But No IOL crystal clear .

Complying its her side has been issued .

This sort must being made an out-take mandatory .

All of them he would be screwed up her as well . Both has no win win relationship at all Only bad tasting left apparently .

0 ( +0 / -0 )

he will step down over a derogatory suggestion involving a popular female entertainer he made last year to some planning staff members.

Good grief, cancel culture comes to Japan. This is disheartening. If his planning staff members disagree with him, they can say it right there to him, instead of running bleating to the press.

In the event, I found his remark rather mild. In what world is an overweight person a good advertisement for a sports event??

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Another issue within the Japanese Olympic. Committee. Just wonder is this because the Japanese working for this committee don't know how to respect and never heard about equality?

This is not the first time the Japanese Olympic committee is on the news.

However, would posing as a cute plump pig really be that far from what Naomi-san has already willingly done repeatedly?

Her humor is, as you said, is meant to be body-positive and she actively promotes self-acceptance at any size. What this man did was take that humor and fling it back at her - and it is not his place to do that. Self-deprecation is funny when one does it to oneself - thus the "self" part.

I don't know this guy, don't know what his intent was, and don't know whether he knows Ms. Watanabe and thought she would appreciate his humor.

But generally speaking, if you are not close with someone you don't try on these types of jokes about them. Why didn't Mr. Sasaki consider that before opening his mouth?

You also have to consider that Ms. Watanabe isn't the only woman involved here. All women are sick and tired of hearing men making unsolicited comments, jokes and insults about other womens' age, looks, weight, body type, sexuality ... on and on it goes.

And with this public condemnation and resignation, it seems that it is finally becoming less acceptable to make such comments - this is a GOOD thing.

There is no such thing as' cancel culture'. The actual term for the phenomena is "consequences of your own actions".

"Cancel culture" is being used in place of "consequences of your own actions" by people who are mad that they can't just say whatever they want to anyone they feel like saying it to. These people don't seem to understand that if you say something demeaning, sexist, homophobic, racist, or just plain rude, then the people at whom you aimed your comments are going to answer back. And then they whine and cry and complain that they are being "canceled," as if it never occurred to them that they actually have responsibility for the words that come out of their mouths, and that having responsibility also means having to face consequences.

In the event, I found his remark rather mild. In what world is an overweight person a good advertisement for a sports event??

Just a suggestion, but perhaps other peoples' weight is not any of your business. And if you can't stop yourself from making it your business, then you should at least refrain from making comments.

In other words, you think it's perfectly okay to demean people for their weight.
