I was really sweating on this news.

Oh well. So much for the opportunity to have them at a more appropriate time, without the oppressive heat and humidity that will be causing its own health problems.

Considering what the world is going through at the moment the olympics is and should be the least of our worries. The persistence with the olympics is becoming annoying.

Wow, maybe instead of deciding to publicize the new dates for the Olympics, the leaders in Japan could focus on a massive problem literally at the last opportunity they have to minimize the impact of the pandemic!!

Are you seriously answering this question faster than the questions about quarantining and working from home?!

People have to realize that the Olympics revolve around the convenience of the U.S. TV market. No U.S. TV, no sponsors most of which are large U.S. companies.

Rescheduling of Olympic games to next year is an excellent decision taken by PM Abe's government in view of the grave danger posed by COVID 19 pandemic in the world. Postponement of the Olympic games will provide more time to his government to concentrate on providing and ensuring safety and security to its people against Coronavirus epidemic by developing an effective vaccine against this dangerous disease either through its own effort or in joint collaboration with friendly countries at the earliest in the near future.

They lost opportunity to schedule it in better month. Forgot the heat wave already ? Such a short memory.

Amazon is still punting out Tokyo 2020 tat at the same filthy high prices. Not sure if this is on-topic or not.

Yeah, I was thinking that it would be like this. Because you can’t do it this spring, for reasons that the article stated, and you also can’t have it during the fall, also for the same reasons.

Believe me people, I would love to of had it in the spring or the fall, but because of the sports leagues and TV contracts, the IOC and Japan didn’t really have much of a choice.

One of the worries they had about cancelling or postponing the Olympics was concern over exacerbating its dwindling popularity. But this constant harking on about the Olympics whilst thousand around the world are dying is embarrassing and sickening, and will quite possible be the nail in the coffin for these sodding games.

None of them has the right to be complaining about the Japanese summer and how hot it gets for the athletes or spectators. They had the perfect chance of doing something about it and did nothing. Unbelievable, but at the moment I don’t really care about it.

Well that was just dumb! It should be scheduled for October like the 1964 Olympics. Doctors will still be taking care of coronavirus victims and have no time for all the people fainting in the heat.

The Olympic committees have never, even once, suggested any idea of switching the Olympics, either 2020 or 2021, from July/August to October. I'm not sure why anyone thought they would do so, there has been literally zero indication that this would ever happen.

Once again it'll have to be the athletes who will force change not these hapless oyagis. If it wasn't for them they'd still be pretending covid wasn't happening

The Olympics is big business. It isn't just games for anyone, except disinterested people who don't follow any summer sports.

Approximately $10B is spent for each recent summer games. China spent 4x that amount. Spread that over 4 yrs - call it $2B/yr - that's not exactly a small business. Cities/countries with poor accountants seem to lose money hosting the Olympics if they aren't very careful. Saw in a table that the 1976 Summer games weren't paid off until 2006 - paid using a tobacco tax.

Nagano Olympics wasn't paid off until 2015 (est), but nobody really knows because the Japanese head ordered the accounting documents "burned." Not good.

Here's hoping that the Tokyo Games have a small profit and ZERO graft.

Just goes to prove that Abe and company learned absolutely NOTHING. All the complaints about the weather and timing could have been fixed in on fell swoop this time, by rescheduling in October, but Abe had to sink everyone else by stating it would be held BY summer next year, not in October!

Damn, people! DO something about this!
