In another incident, Australian chef de mission Ian Chesterman confirmed the men's rugby sevens team and rowing teams left a hole in the wall in the athletes accommodation at the Olympic Village but indicated no action would be taken.

Well, cannot blame them too much.

So called first world civilized people.

Drunken Aussies on a plane? Well knock me down with a feather.

44 ( +50 / -6 )

What else are we meant to do on a plane for Gawd’s sake!

-17 ( +14 / -31 )

Drunken Australians... Isn't that an oxymoron? Lol

10 ( +22 / -12 )

Sad, considering thier fellow citizens are not allowed to fly internationally.

25 ( +30 / -5 )

Can't Japan extradite them to Japan and charge them? Acting up a plane is no joke. Poor JAL staff.

4 ( +21 / -17 )

Losers, on the field, in the plane and in life.

Dont talk about your family like that, Burning Bush. They must have some redeeming features?

8 ( +18 / -10 )

They were under stress to go back to a lockdown life in Australia

1 ( +13 / -12 )

...How drunk were they? Are we talking a bit of alcohol in blood, or a bit of blood in alcohol levels here?

And yeah holes in the walls in Japan? that won't suprise anyone - those 10mm plasterboards are flimsyer than paper, to be honest...

-12 ( +8 / -20 )

Lawlessness on planes is a serious issue. That is why chutes are needed and escape hatches. Bigger size of course for the Aussie are big boys.

Arrest them and extradite in my opinion.

Why can’t all drunks be passive drunks?

-7 ( +8 / -15 )

There goes the shikikin.

9 ( +11 / -2 )

Ye har, dudes!

0 ( +4 / -4 )

They just are what they are and do the things they are capable of, playing soccer or rugby. So why did anyone else , especially the sports officials or the airline expect them to behave like well-mannered Nobel prize university researchers? There’s the responsibility, to expect from them more than they ever can be or do.

So much for the Japanese style glamour of being a CA. Now, the reality.

1 ( +5 / -4 )

Jesus...Aussies, Soccer, Rugby, post games...don't need to be Sherlock Holmes to predict this. They should have been loaded onto a Quantas flight.

6 ( +12 / -6 )

Send them bills for any damages both in Japan and on the flight.

In Australia, put them in jail with charges pending for 48 hours to be certain the severity of their actions are known.

Drunken Aussies on a plane? Well knock me down with a feather.

No Aussie refuses free grog

Drunken Australians... Isn't that an oxymoron?

no, that would be sober Australians

Losers, on the field, in the plane and in life.

yeh, not like those winning Yanks

5 ( +13 / -8 )

joffy

Well to be fair, they are going home to a Draconian state. One last hurrah?

Making light of a nation approaching the pandemic in a responsible way, AND the behavior these idiots showed on a plane?

Major oof.

4 ( +10 / -6 )

Tooheys new. What a shock you'd support them with a name like that.

-2 ( +3 / -5 )

I've gotten on great with almost every Aussie I've met in Japan, yet at the same time this news is about as surprising as tomorrow's weather forecast saying "it's going to be hot".

5 ( +10 / -5 )

Toilet was wasted?!! Photos?

-3 ( +3 / -6 )

Who says stereotypes aren't earned?

12 ( +14 / -2 )

Why wasn't the trouble reported ahead and the flight met by the police?

1 ( +5 / -4 )

Isn't incident like this normal for the Aussies?

11 ( +14 / -3 )

Similar complaints on a flight home to NZ as well but perhaps not as rowdy.

Did they sit in economy, business, or first class?

0 ( +2 / -2 )

I’m playing devil’s advocate on this. If you were cooped up in a small Japanese dorm for the duration of your event while only being able to go to your event and back without much socializing, wouldn’t you want to let loose? In fact, the Australian athletes should have been more respectful.

-6 ( +2 / -8 )

Where are the sky marshals when you need them? I just saw today a news that during a US flight, they taped a drunkard into his seat and left him like that. Pretty job well done.

10 ( +11 / -1 )

Drunken Aussies on a plane? Well knock me down with a feather.

Don't embellish borish behavior. Let's hope they are put on a no-fly list and barred from any involvement in any future Olympics.

Imagine the reaction on this forum if it were athletes from countries not under the thumb of imperialism.

-3 ( +3 / -6 )

Ugly Australians Oi Oi Oi

3 ( +9 / -6 )

Sounds like a lot of drunks,,,,,damned dangerous, perhaps charges are in order!

0 ( +5 / -5 )

sounds like a bunch of wild kangaroo's bar hopping on JAL!!

3 ( +5 / -2 )

The Chef de Mission, which means, he/she is the head of the delegation, ie. in charge/responsible etc etc for the delegate, Quote from him " There was a hole in the wall, but that's pretty easy to do." "I understand there's some big people and some very flimsy walls, temporary walls as well. I don't think you had to do much to put a hole in the wall." such flimsy/lame excuse, from a leader, what can you expect from the delegate which he led???

5 ( +7 / -2 )

Aussies, rugby, football and booze. What else do you expect?

5 ( +7 / -2 )

No cabin crew should have to put up with that crap behaviour. Federal police in Sydney must have been on a tea break. Fine them, shame them and ban them.

5 ( +7 / -2 )

Pfft.

Drunk Jock Australians.

Not surprising news at all.

8 ( +9 / -1 )

Very unruly behaviors may put other passengers in danger in the plane. No doubt such passengers would be arrested in the US.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

Australian bogan behaviour is as bad as the American. Everywhere i travel, i said i am from New Zealand!

2 ( +5 / -3 )

No cabin crew should have to put up with that crap behaviour. Federal police in Sydney must have been on a tea break. Fine them, shame them and ban them.

Agreed except for the police comment. If no complaints were made in flight (and I do find it difficult to believe none were, but it isn’t clear in the article) it at least before the passengers leave the aircraft, then the police have no reason to get involved at such an early stage.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

Nowadays, on the plane journey, we’re expected to sit down and do nothing. Why not walk around as cabin staff do? Why not talk to your fellow passengers? Why not have a drink or two?

if the problems with the flight were too severe then the pilot would’ve landed somewhere between Japan and Australia. However, he didn’t,so they weren’t

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

There was a hole in the wall, but that's pretty easy to do," Chesterman said. "I understand there's some big people and some very flimsy walls, temporary walls as well. I don't think you had to do much to put a hole in the wall."

…lmao!

What is new? On my many travels around the world, have found nobody but the drunk Australians or the British being rowdy and causing trouble.

These two cultures cannot control their drinking but think it is manly to drink a lot.

Not too long ago, a Australian drunk couple killed a policeman in Bali who was trying to stop the rowdiness.

Japan should send the bill to Australia plus ban these players like American airlines do, and Australia should ban these players not only for playing but also flying.

-3 ( +2 / -5 )

If it was as bad as the airline claims, then why did they take so long to send a written complaint? Also the pilot should have informed the police through the control tower prior to landing and have those “ culprits “ arrested for failing to listen to the flight crew and endangering other passengers! So makes me wonder if it was exaggerated since the airline crew didn’t get the authorities involved. Either way it’s just terrible that some people can’t hold their drinks and behave like jerks on airplanes. These people should face the full brunt of the law!

Someone would think that when you are representing your country you would act and conduct yourself as a gentleman, or close tom it.

“Drunken Australians... Isn't that an oxymoron? Lol”

Gaijinland, mate, you may want to grab a dictionary and check the meaning of oxymoron. You’ll find that something more along the lines of “sober” rather than “drunken” makes a lot more more sense.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

This is a classic case of cultural misunderstanding. For the JAL staff expected them to be quiet and fall asleep and not make any noise and follow requests like robots, however Australian culture especially of young men enjoy being rowdy and getting smashed. Now they are in quarantine and once out it might be possible that they won’t remember what happened. Perhaps if it was a kantasu flight there might not be any escalation. It’s difficult for Japanese to understand Australia’s unique culture.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Bet none of them were even in the league of the all-time Australian champ of a sportsman drinking on a plane.

Cricketer David Boon (the 5 foot 2 Tasmanian with flared pants ;) who mythically drank 52 cans between Aus and London. When this story is held in high esteem in Australian folklore, is it any wonder really that such shenanigans take place?

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Quite funny to see the american and aussie expats defending themselves here.

The chinese quite rightfully criticize their behavior.

The japanese should grow some bone and fine them.
