What? Are we supposed to be happy by his visit, like Santa Clause is coming to town?
snowymountainhell
Despite the 2nd part of the headline “infections on rise again”,
it may be “Christmas in July” for some ‘good girls & boys’
with perhaps a few shūgi-bukuro (祝儀袋) ?
Asiaman7
Talk about unnecessary showmanship. Guys, just stay in Tokyo. All this unneeded movement throughout the country can’t be any good. I’m sure Hiroshima and Nagasaki residents appreciate the thought, but they probably don’t want you traveling there at this time.
snowymountainhell
Is he *special, *like a messiah, for some?
and “then, the clouds with part of an ‘a ray of hope’ will befall his dominion.”
Monty
Where are the news in this article?
All information in this article are repeated information and are already known.
snowymountainhell
Perhaps @Monty 7:06am they’re ‘beta-testing’ the “NEW” JOC team’s capabilities in advance of Their Games?
*- “*JOC to watch for hateful online posts during Tokyo Olympics” - Jun 30
*Perhaps *we should be careful what we question?
Perhaps speak in code or “hushed voices” in reverence to “His holiness”.

I would hardly call this clown a dignitary...
sf2k
Hey it's already over. Delta has landed. Even before the UK team arrives.
Doc
Japan extends the GoTo program to foreign “dignitaries”.
Three days in quarantine for this character. Sounds like jet lag is much more debilitating than Covid.
Tokyo-Engr
He will arrive in Japan, hold meetings after 3 days, then the "dignitaries" (those above the rest of us who are either Japanese citizens or live here and pay taxes) will travel (at our expense) to Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Why are they making these totally unnecessary trips during a Pandemic, rising cases, etc.?
Will they make these trips even if another State of Emergency is declared?
Again: The Japanese Government and JOC do not care one bit about the hard working Japanese taxpayers (and those of us who are residents here and pay taxes also). Of course we know the IOC does not care at all either.
The arrogance is sickening (but totally believable at this point).
I am for the Olympics by the way...just wait until the Pandemic calms down. But these people are like spoiled children who expect their every need to be met and catered to immediately.
didou
If those guys can only do a 3 days quarantine, it means the 2 weeks quarantine is useless
dagon
Ahead of Bach's visit, COVID-19 cases are rising in Tokyo.
Herr Bach will see the Japanese people heartfully united by emotion, doing their utmost to bring to fruition the shining hope of the Olympic games that are the one and only thing that will symbolize our triumplant victory over the pandemic.
Or he will hear some such thing as he is feted during his visit.
Alfie Noakes
Tawdry political posturing in a feeble attempt to associate the Olympics with "peace". What was all that guff about keeping politics out of sport? The hypocrisy is nauseating.
ian
Ioc official's visit and rising infection cases forced in one article lol
Alfie Noakes
The hibakusha aren't impressed either.

Michael Machida
I can't wait to get his autograph and place it in the trash.
Tokyo-Engr
Can those supporting the Olympics going on as scheduled here justify this statement with a valid argument?
Downvotes do not constitute a valid argument by the way.
Coates is a narcissistic megalomaniac (I am putting it kindly)
Boy Next Door
How come he'd only spend 3 days in isolation? While the rest of us would spend around 7 or more days?
Monty
@Tokyo Eng
the hard working Japanese taxpayers (and those of us who are residents here and pay taxes also)
I am a resident here, pay taxes also AND I am a hard worker too!
Lol.
plasticmonkey
Since these games were originally supposed to show the world how Tohoku has recovered from the 2011 disaster, why don't Bach and Coates take a visit to the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear plant? And since more recently these games were supposed to celebrate human victory over the coronavirus, why don't they visit an ICU in Tokyo?
Pukey2
I assume that they'll be visiting Nanjing next year too.
Tokyo-Engr
@Monty. I do not think I said or implied otherwise
I am glad to hear you are.
Are you saying you support this visit by these narcissistics? If so I would be interested why you think they should come.
Tom Doley
As a reminder??? More like to brainwash people that Japan is a victim of WW2. Reminds me of NK where foreigners must visit the statues of the dead leaders.
Some dude
“Regarding the three day quarantine of Lord Bach, a government spokesperson, speaking on account of a anonymity, said :
There is absolutely no truth to the rumor that we found a really, really expensive steakhouse in Ginza, ordered it to close for three days and set up a palatial suite, and that is where Lord Bach will quarantine. These rumors are destructive and untrue. It was in fact a shop specializing in kaseki ryori and they volunteered to do all of the above after meeting our heavily tattooed and muscular representatives”.
gogogo
I hope Japan isn't turning this into "we are the only country to have an atomic bomb dropped on them" sort of deal because that isn't going to go well for them.
Fighto!
Bach, Coates, Sebastian Coe and Dick Pound are not "dignataries". They are the lowest of all gutter politicians with their snouts in the money trough. They do not deserve any welcome or hospitality - they deserve to be harrassed and booed wherever they go.
Cancel the corrupt Olympic trainwreck.
Sam Watters
Well said!
wanderlust
He and his fellow robber-baron Coates should be visiting Tohoku and/ or Fukushima to celebrate their 'recovery', after all, that was the prime reason Japan pushed and bribed their way to getting these games.
Monty
@Tokyo-Eng
No, No...I don't support anything that is related to the Olympics.
In my opinion the Olympics should be canceled, but I guess it is too late for that.
Your sentence in you post sounds to me, that ONLY japanese people are hard workers.
So to give some kind of "refreshment" to that, I said "I am a hard worker too", even I am not a japanese. (LOL)
Back to the Olympics...I guess we have to accept that they will be held and that guys like Bach will travel to some places in Japan.
I accept already that the Olympics will be held, and I will take this situation in my own hands by doing my Best to come out of this situation healthy during my daily life.
I will continue to do my best personal preventions, like wearing mask, keep social distance where it is possible, use sanitizers...yeah..and wait till the Olympics is over.
I will got my first shot of Moderna tomorrow and my second shot on July 30th at my company.
But that is too late for the Olympics.
Some people will complain that the vaccine is too late for the Olympics.
But complaining about that makes no sense for me, because complaining will not change anything.
It is opposite: I am happy and thankful that I can get the vaccine much earlier than expected.
Kobe White Bar Owner
Not welcome. Stay home and keep your Olympics!!! Beyond ridiculous.
Stewie
The telling line in the article is that the IOC gets 75% of its revenue from television rights. Nothing else matters. Got to keep them fat cats fed and watered.
Tokyo-Engr
Monty. Yes: many of us who are foreigners here in Japan also work hard, pay taxes, etc.
I feel more sorry for the Japanese citizens who don’t want the Olympics to carry on than as scheduled than I feel for myself however as it is their own government doing this to them.
It seems people can provide down votes but cannot provide any logical explanation as to why Coates is correct to say the games should be held even in a state of Emergency or explain why it makes sense for these “dignitaries” to travel to Hiroshima and Nagasaki under the current conditions.
GdTokyo
This man is an embarrassment as is the Olympic "movement" (substitute the word "bowel" and you are there).
The IOC is an un-elected quasi-state that seeks only to enrich itself. As such, it enables totalitarian dictatorships that oppress their own populations. It's time to start boycotting them.
Some dude
VrethToday 10:20 am JST
The title of "president" has really gone to his head
Presidents are, theoretically at least, supposed to be accountable to the people who elected them.
Bach’s attitude is nearer to that of a king or a dictator than a president.
kusunoki
Why only 3 days in quarantine?? Literally EVERYONE else (sorry, I mean those who aren't connected to the Olympics) has to spend 14 days locked in strict quarantine, checking in with the government multiple times per day with some crazily invasive and strict quarantine regulations. Yet anyone connected to the Olympics is exempt?
For reference, current quarantine measures: https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2021/06/25/national/japan-quarantine-measures/
jason
Why can’t they work from home like we have to?
tamanegi
Welcome to Japan President Bach!
Sven Asai
Of course, welcome. Why not, as long as the games are canceled. I also often just visit Nagasaki and the sites there and don’t hold big virus spreading sports events. lol
Blacklabel
I am also curious how he only gets 3 days quarantine.
Mung
Asiaman7
Exactly! The Japanese holidays start early to mid August right when the Olympics are finishing, and a lot of the people of Japan and especially Tokyo return to their families for Obon which is my biggest concern. My little coastal town of Miyazaki is popular with tourists and that on top of returnees, I can see it only going one way like it did after Christmas holidays and Golden week.
Will the Japanese government try to stop this happening after previous failures? I’m not holding my breath.
Gooch
Three days, eh? It's good to be king.
Abbey
So now we are referring to clowns as dignitaries are we ?
shogun36
That long, huh? Such a rule abiding human being............
He should be doing 3-5 years in solitary confinement.
Hideomi Kuze
Hiroshima seems to do Not welcome IOC.
Zaphod
Meaningless news. Nobody knows the actual infection rate, and seeing that the vast majority of the infected have no symptoms, it is probably much higher. Stop the hype already. As for Bach, he should limit his visit to his work and spare us the sightseeing nonsense
Richard Gallagher
Question: where has Bach travelled the past several weeks? Doubtful he has been sitting at home, maintaining social distancing and staying in place.
Zaphod
Richard Gallagher
I thought the vaccinated don´t need the rigamarole with masks and human distance any more, or are you saying the vaccination is pointless?
Maria 'Bing' Velasquez Reid
Above all of the possible spread - I do really hope no political demonstration of ANY KIND - be it a gesture, a stand, a pin or a hat be considered to appear in the Olympics. It should not be politicized. We already have the variant problem to contend with.
at least it will be pleasure able to watch on TV. I do not want to see any demonstrations etc… or else I will turn off my TV because I do not want political entertainment.
