"You never want to lose to Canada..." is a horribly crass thing to say, but then again consider the source. I'm rooting for Australia!

I'm American, but after the team took a knee during the national anthem, I'm glad Canada won (Geaux Canada)!!!!!

And yes, "You never want to lose to Canada." ??? Huh? Whut? Megan Rapinoe: Not only did we lose, but I'm an idiot!

Looks like the US team’s market value just went down. No problem. They just play for the pleasure of sport.

Canada got a goal out of nowhere, while the US was the better team throughout the game but couldn't get it into the net - that's football for ya.

(After all, Japan won a World Cup final despite being out-played. And now they couldn't even get into the medal rounds while finishing 3rd in their group)

So congrats to the Canucks - they have to now face the on-form Svedish blondes

"You never want to lose to Canada..." is a horribly crass thing to say, but then again consider the source.

Because Canada is the US women's rival in North America

Just like Mexico and the US are the rivals in the men's game - Mexico would say they never want to lose to the US, and vice versa

It's a rivalry thang - if ya don't get the Clasicos and derbies, ya won't understand it

I’m glad Canada won….but that was one of the worst competitions I’ve seen at these games.

I wouldn’t know if it’s "tainted" but seriously, it was like a comedy of errors in slow motion. With all the self-promotion by the USWNT I was at least expecting some skill, if not speed. There was neither. This is supposed to be high level.

soft penalty

I never knew what a soft penalty was, but after watching the video replay, I certainly get it now.

Go Canucks!

Yeah all these "Im gonna use my platform" people forgot to realize you dont have a platform when you lose.

They lost to a bunch of boys

And so would any women's national team - the US male teams are no slouch

The US women's national team still has a very impressive record of being undefeated in 45 of their last 49 games against other national teams (winning a World Cup along the way)

And they still have a chance to win 3rd place and bronze medal here

And this may become a good thing - it'll whet their hunger to win again the next World Cup. The last decade, the USWNT has won the next global tournament after being beaten in the previous tournament

Congratulations! to Canada. Condolences to the other team.

The top ranked US womens team was beaten - and beaten handily - by an under-15 boys team in Dallas just 2 years ago.

Tells you all you need to know.

As for Rapinoe, she's now off to destroy Vicoria's Secret in a business venture I'm sure they're really looking forward to knowing she's not only a loser, but perhaps the most unlikeable athlete in sport.

People are gonna hate the best in the world for their own reasons of narrative and political reasons and bias, but winning the last two World Cups, and 44 straight international wins...a stretch from Jan. 2019 to July 2021...proves without doubt the dominance of the greatest national sports team this millennia.

I’m Canadian, ergo my happiness. But that’s beside the point.

My point was that the level if soccer was terrible.

US women's team is top notch, but they just do not have the marketing power.

It doesn’t help that they are marketing their politics and not their sport.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

Of course, this match against the academy team was very informal and should not be a major cause for alarm.

They lost to a bunch of boys - end of story. Imagine if the US men’s team played the women’s team just to build chemistry to get ready for Russia - no one would be playing down a loss.

Bob, I'm guessing you are a guy. Dogging a women's soccer team which has won women's world cups and women's Olympic soccer.

Like fr, you are pretty much dumping on women's sports in general. Jussayin

Surely you watch the professional women's club games, no?

I've seen some when they managed to be on a network. Same for national games

Btw, the next FIFA Women's World Cup is just 2 years, in 2023 in Australia and New Zealand (so not much time difference with Japan)

Wolfpack & Bob,

Just how far are you guys willing to drop to discredit a "women's" soccer team? Ok maybe you don't agree with their protests against racism and equal pay. But.....wait those are the things ur mad about?

Also,

"biological males shouldn't participate in women's sports"

"Boys soccer team beats women's soccer team"

"See they're not that good"

It’s been a rough Olympics for the American stars with many of the more outspoken “I’ll use my platform to promote (X)” failing or bringing in disappointing results.

As for the game, you hate to have ref decide the outcome. That foul was a free kick in the box if anything, seeing how the Canadian player quickly got up.

True.

Of course, this match against the academy team was very informal and should not be a major cause for alarm. The U.S. surely wasn’t going all out, with the main goal being to get some minutes on the pitch, build chemistry when it comes to moving the ball around, improve defensive shape and get ready for Russia.

What a coincidence. Heres what the Junior High School student paper reported the following day;

"Of course, this match against the US National Women's Soccer Team was very informal and should not be a major cause for alarm. The under-15 boys team surely wasn't going all-out, with the main goal being to get some minutes on the pitch, build chemistry when it comes to moving the ball around, improve defensive shape and get ready for Riverside Junior High School."

But of course, you don't have to wait 4 years for the pleasure of watching. Surely you watch the professional women's club games, no?

Yeah, its just so hard, isn't it?

It IS a bit amusing, though, seeing the Trump ers on here, who have done ZERO for their country, hope that their team loses simply so they can stick it to a woman who rightly bashed their hero.

They took a knee AFTER the anthem for about 10 seconds. You'll be fine

Anyway, was a pretty physical game, I was kinda looking forward to a USA / Japan rematch but its good to see some new teams this year.

This has been a great Olympics, not for who has won but for who has lost.

-6 ( +5 / -11 )

Megan Rapinoe and the women's national team has done more for women's sports than anyone. They did not come to the Olympics only on a platform. They've been the best in the world for a long time...44 straight victories before these Olympics and so popular, even the men's national team in the last week has come out in protest saying, yes the women should be paid more than us, because of world wide success and great character of the women, including Rapinoe.

Rapinoe talks the talk and walks the walk. She doesn't just symbolize a platform with a mask, then avoid interviews due to disdain for the media, except when she's paid from the media which makes her feel good. She doesn't show up at the ESPY's, do swimsuit photos, glorify herself by having a Barbie doll but avoid her own sporting events. Then to just to show up in one she'll get 'better' attention, crying the wrong message. That person is not the voice Megan is.

No, Rapinoe is the truth. She's legit in her actions and her platform. one she's been on for years, she's a great sports person, and is an iconic hero, as is the USA women's team of people like Alex Wolfe, Carli LLoyd, Christen Press, Julie Ertz, Crystal Dunn, Tobin Heath, etc. It was a poor tournament, and yep, they're older and slower. It's likely the end of an era, but they still have bronze to go for.

People are gonna hate the best in the world for their own reasons of narrative and political reasons and bias, but winning the last two World Cups, and 44 straight international wins...a stretch from Jan. 2019 to July 2021...proves without doubt the dominance of the greatest national sports team this millennia.
