And well they should.
And if FIFA denies both teams' request, the girls should all forfeit the match.

Definitely! 11AM is ridiculous.

No and No!
We in Tokyo have to deal with road closures, expressway surcharges causing heavier traffic on local roads, forcing people to take public transportation during a surge in covid.
You chose to come here despite major opposition to having the games, you were all warned of the heat and humidity,
If we have to deal with it well tough luck, deal with it!

Isn't it ultimately the American TV networks who decide when which events happen at what time? They're the ones who essentially own the IOC.
I'd guess that there's not much of an audience in the US for any event that doesn't involve US athletes, so I can see this request being granted.

Japan is set to play Mexico at 20:00 in the bronze medal game that same day. Why not switch times? — particularly since the gold medal game should be given precedence.

Asiaman7: "Japan is set to play Mexico at 20:00 in the bronze medal game that same day. Why not switch times? — particularly since the gold medal game should be given precedence."
That makes too much sense. Better to just stick with showing the Japan men, who will draw more of a domestic crowd to the televisions, in the evening, and keep the foreign women playing for gold in the midday sun. They are not "samurai Japan", after all.

NBC pays billions of dollars but as someone else said, USA team is out and not much USA following for this game. Could be changed.
Fighto!
Swedish and Canadian people would have genuine trouble handling that heat and humidity, let alone running around in it for 90 minutes.
Changing it to a cooler time would be logical, but we have seen that the IOC does NOT place a high priority on safety.
Partyice
Exactly!

"Swedish and Canadian people would have genuine trouble handling that heat and humidity, let alone running around in it for 90 minutes."
LOL and Asian, Latin Americans, Africans can't handle the cold?
shogun36
You’d think, knowing the heat from the sun in Japanese summer, they’d put a roof on top of that olympic stadium……….
but like others said, that’s too logical for Japan.

America no longer has any dogs in the race. Why should they care?
garypen
Last night, we waited to walk the dog until after 7pm, when it cooled down a little. We had to cut our usual 30 min walk in half.
And, I thought I'd do a little yard work this morning at 9am, before it got to hot. I had to stop after 15 minutes.
I can't imagine running around on a humongous soccer pitch for 90 mins in this blistering humid hellscape.
kolohe
tennis players had their matches moved to 3p.m. after complaining about the mid-day heat.
BurakuminDes
A closed roof was in the original design, but scrapped due to "fiscal concerns".
It’s hot so what
Olympians should be able to play in all weather. They are olympians
tooheysnew
I, in my mid 30’s, played football regularly during these summer months, at midday, on dusty dirt grounds.
What I would have given for a lush green grassy pitch
rainyday
Two countries that are definitely not used to this type of heat.
Either that is a typo or the temperatures were greater than those on the surface of the sun.
Pukey2
Why is the bronze medal match taking place AFTER the gold medal match? To protect the Japanese athletes?
garypen
So, they were moved to the hottest time of day? Were they being punished for making the request?
rainyday
Thanks to the idiotic way the clocks are set in Japan (it gets dark by 7PM even in the summer), I think 3PM is a couple of hours past the hottest time of the day.
Jind
Request denied by IOC.

I have been going rock climbing for the past 3 months and the weather has been like being in a red hot oven. It's 2 hours I do and longer than a football game.
Athletes are fitter than me and should be able to endure the 90 minutes game. Thy should be given at least one break each half to refresh. I carry gaterode with me.
Sven Asai
Just don’t compete and grab even 22 gold medals. What is possible in high jumping must be also fairly be possible in women’s soccer.
Fighto!
True, if high jumpers can choose to share gold, other athletes should too. But in this case they will go to a countback, for example goals scored minus goals conceded thru the tournament.
kurisupisu
Good to see social distancing being carried out-as always in the ‘safe’ Olympics…
tooheysnew
I’m sure you’d love to be in there amongst them too
garypen
Clocks are set appropriately for the time zone. There's nothing"idiotic" about it.
And, it only starts getting dark at 7pm.
You think wrong. Do you actually live here?
If you want confirmation, just look at any hourly weather forecast.
garypen
Incorrect. The game has been rescheduled to 9pm.
