"When it was in its prime, it was the national game of the country.

Previous generations of Indians were taught in school that hockey is the national sport, even though most had never played hockey and had instead played cricket and football in school. These days, the Indian government says that there is such declared national sport in India. It is embarrassing for them to admit the decline of hockey and easier to claim that there never was a national sport even though most were taught otherwise in school.

Whatever be the result in Tokyo, the glory days of Indian hockey are long gone now and will never return. The decline of Indian hockey started with the rise in popularity of cricket and Kapil's devils who won the World Cup, and given the amount of money in cricket these days as compared to the humble lives most hockey players live, no talented youngster in his right mind would want to take up hockey as a sport.

Hockey India players are peaking at the right time. The Manpreet Singh led Indian stick-wielders have the potential to go far in Tokyo. All the best.
