It’s almost like…holding a massive sporting event while a contagious virus is mutating and spreading all around the world at different rates and in different strains…is kind of not a very good idea.

Would be interesting to see how UK responds to this revised restrictions of not entering Japan till 5 days of event start and isolate for three days after Japan entry - UK has more medal winning potential than India....

Japan continue to be incredibly lacking in empathy for other countries.

Has it always been like this here? Admittedly, I've only been in Japan for 8 years.

highly unfair for Indian athletes, who have worked hard for five years,

Blame your populist prime minister who doesn't seem to care about public health. It's called "collective karma".

The reality sandwich of holding the games during a pandemic starts to be tasted and understood!

The mods don’t do very well with figurative or metaphorical posts (too much lateral thinking required), so your amusing post (and this one) will probably get deleted. But before it is: if we show a brainless talento eating said sandwich and squealing hysterically about how delicious it is, we may yet be able to convince people that these games are Officially Endorsed by the Titans of Japanese TV…

I wouldn’t call it intentional lack of empathy, personally. It’s nearer to tone deafness.

Good luck with the protests but since the Japanese government has made clear it will not listen to their own people that is against holding the games there is no chance they will listen to other countries so they can be treated fairly.

7 ( +7 / -0 )

The lack of empathy for other countries is very real.

One of the problems for the Japanese people to get the vaccine is that the don't trust foreign drugs. Now, the j-gov is trying to sell the narrative that Astrozeneca is made-in-japan, so more people will accept it.

India has a point. The Olympics are for everyone, if it's ok for some countries to go, it should be ok for everyone to go (minus countries banned for cheating). This is exactly why the Olympics should be put off until after the pandemic has passed.

Ah, I see, another trick to improve Japan’s chances in the medals haul!

Millions suffering in India due to virus and poverty and they want Gold to make Indian proud of their country?

4 ( +6 / -2 )

To add further, Narinder Batra, president of the Indian Olympic Association, I just searched about him. He is a businessman, closely associated with the current ruling party, and played hockey at the college level. I guess this explains all.

Get your act together, India, and then you can talk about "unfair" rules.

@bokuda

That's an interesting point about not trusting foreign drugs.

However, people here seem to be obsessed with other foreign things-music, fashion, Christmas, valentine's Day, Halloween, food, films...the list is endless.

I wonder what the problem is with foreign drugs?

Don't come to Tokyo, then. It's not going to be much of an event anyways, even if they decide to have it.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

It is nothing to do with the athletes. It seems to me Japan govt restricted the number of visitors along with the athletes. Many politicians in the name of sports administrators plan to have a free trip to Tokyo with the Government's money. It is their free lunch, which is at stake. By the way, how many medals India expects to win?

3 ( +3 / -0 )

All is summed up with 3 words; politics, money, and hypocrisy. Nothing wonderful about that.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Let’s see: We presently have “Playbook version 3, 6.16.’21”. - Too late for retroactivity by were these policies & protocols in place for the arriving Ugandan team Sunday?

“The protocols will involve daily testing of athletes for a week before they depart for Japan and for them to "refrain from coming into contact with other teams for three days after they arrive" in Japan.” -

No need to come, just boycott, hopefully the other 11 and will follow suit.

The Japanese gave India the social stigma being amplified now. They let the impervous salaray man travel to & and from india with no honest restrictions and now point to India as a problem. What a shameful country Japan has become. Shame on you Japan and your scapegoat leaders.

1 ( +4 / -3 )

Japan's actions are NOT reasonable under the circumstances.

Most European countries for example accept proof of full vaccination and one more negative PCR test upon arrival to be free from any quarantine. And actually they will be doing more than that with multiple testing before and after arrival. All participating countries should be put on same level.

'unfair' Tokyo Olympic rules

Welcome to Tokyo!!!

The home of contradictions, double standards, and money science.

How may we help you?

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Ah, I see, another trick to improve Japan’s chances in the medals haul!

This is what I've been thinking all along. The Japanese athletes will be refreshed and well-prepared, not having to endure all the restrictions imposed on all foreign athletes. This, on top of NO foreign supporters.

I think Japan's actions are reasonable under the circumstances.

Under the circumstances, the games should be cancelled.

Humble apologies to anyone that may have been offended within this thread. The ESL online thesaurus offered that word as a synonym for “idiots”. - Upon additional study, it was cross-referenced and clarified in another tome as “urban slang” and inappropriate for such a respected public forum. It’s misuse here was not intended to be offensive or intentionally hurtful.

Ah, I see, another trick to improve Japan’s chances in the medals haul!

China is hoping to do that next year by simply denying the competition entrance or making compliance so inconvenient that athletes will be off their game.

money OVER science**

Easy solution. Don't come, make your actions speak.

This is up there with building a "charitable" high speed railway line in India that is completely incompatible with the existing railway network, despite the fact that major European railway companies have said that making it compatible can be done at minimal cost.

To me, this suggests team members have not & will not get jabbed.

India, please call Japan out. To most of the western world you stand on equal ground and that those paying attention know your future influence only get’s stronger.

Yeah, no. To most of the western world, India is still considered a third-world country.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Yes, I agree. An equal footing for all should be adhered to. Either decide not to hold the games or treat every participant equally. And as far as testing is concerned, I don't believe testing is in anyway accurate. So this is also unfair and could be deemed as discriminatory.

@Hakman, well spotted!

India, please call Japan out. To most of the western world you stand on equal ground and that those paying attention know your future influence only get’s stronger. Keep speaking out and use the developing nation card to your advantage…. Like China’s a developing nation… omg. You have my support and best wishes!

Japan is providing India with medical equipment and $50 million in free aid.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

LOL India is not going to win anything anyways (except maybe in wrestling or shooting). The Indian Olympic contingent should save themselves the embarrassment and stay at home.

Maybe they already have an excuse ready for their impending failure and that is why they are complaining about COVID restrictions.
