I presume from the picture that his biological sex is male.

The article doesn't elaborate on his new identity, what is it?

For example does he identify as a Lesbian?

looks just like anybody else, why all the fuss?

Congrats to this person on their appointment, but this would have been more newsworthy months or even, years ago.

Now, it just appears to be just more efforts for attention to garner anyOlympic Support” in these final days.

"There's been a massive change if you compare it to 10 years ago,"

Lol. Just about choked on my breakfast with this one.

"Japanese law requires that transgender people who wish to change their official documents must meet strict criteria, including being designated as without reproductive capacity, effectively requiring most people to be sterilized to meet the standard.

They must also be single and have no children under the age of 20"

"Japan is the only G7 nation that does not legally recognize same-sex marriage".

The things I hear everyday about this country and its laws just make me sick !!!

Good luck to this person in a highly backwards society.

Excellent !!.. LGBTQ rights are HUMAN rights !!..

Sorry medievals, this is not your century.. lol !!

Live and let live !!..

They really need to change the whole forced sterilization of transgender people law. It's just cruel and inhumane. I can't think of that being a stipulation for any other medical procedure. It's not even a punishment for rapists or murderers!

Especially considering Japan is always focused on their population and birth rate decline, you'd think this would be one of the first or easiest laws to fix.

So a guy or chick decided to come out of the closet and they relate it to the previous ojichan saying sexists remarks that ultimately costed him the throne, how?

including being designated as without reproductive capacity, effectively requiring most people to be sterilized to meet the standard.

That's pretty dang messed up.

I presume from the picture that his biological sex is male.

So he's convinced you he's a man.

Yep, the LDP have backtracked on every promise made during the run up to the Olympics (smoking bans, gender equality, LGBTQ laws etc) and have been held up to global ridicule for forcing women to take their husband's name after marriage.

Good luck to Fumino Sugiyama and all that, but this really does smack of a cynical PR move.

Excellent !!.. LGBTQ rights are HUMAN rights

aren't we all HUMAN..... equal rights and all that?

3 ( +6 / -3 )

Yet another ploy. Good Grief!

It is tiring having to go around guessing genders these days- it doesn’t matter to me...

1 ( +5 / -4 )

Seems the olympics are being used to push the agenda about gender and the rest of the alphabet up to the letter T .

How about they keep it about sport but shouldnt they be not even having these damn games with this virus going on.

Live and let live !!..

So you have no problem with people using "he/him" for biological men and "she/her" for biological women right.

Just let people apply whatever pronouns they choose to apply.

-5 ( +0 / -5 )

We are all human and deserve to live and be happy, people can choose whatever pronouns they want, asked to be addressed anyway they want but in this case of international competitive male female gender sports, this is just all wrong.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

I dont care whatever these New recruits gender or whatever pronouns they are into etc, it just DAFT to be making a bunch of changes at this point in time to try & put lipstick on this pig known as the Tokyo olympics.....what a farce

Good for her!

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

@bass4funk if you read the article you'd see that he retired before he transitioned and hasn't been competitive for a decade. He's part of the Olympic Committee, not the Olympic team.

@burning bush Fumino Sugiyama IS his identity. He transitioned a decade ago.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

I'm not good with Japanese names; anyway, I congratulate her.
