The medals will mean nothing. Who wants to hold up one while the world mourns, and possibly spread infection upon arrival or when they return?

Besides, if the Olympics are held, they won't be fair. Athletes for some countries are in no position to train right now. There is a chance of injuries for some sports - you don't want to end up in the hospital with something avoidable- and some will be grieving for loved ones. It will not be a fair comparison of who is the best. It will just show who got lucky. The medals will be worthless.

Even if the corona thing is better, the Olympics turnout is going to be poor. Hotels are going to stay empty. Japan is going to be massively in debt and the only people to profit from it are the US TV networks.

I can understand the statement about having a bit more time to make a decision on this and I also understand that other than the money there will be a lot of disappointed athletes who worked their butts off for this chance.

However, what I do have a problem with is the fact that energy and resources which can be used to fight the virus and the spread of this is being misdirected toward the Olympics.

It seems the best compromise would be to immediately state there will be a delay, not a cancellation and for the IOC and the world to say that once this is under control they will do their best to fully support the games.

This could be seen as an opportunity for Japan and the world to make this a celebration for humanity which would not only be about sports.

My vote is to announce a delay immediately, win the war against Covid-19 and then make the Olympics a celebration for the world.

the sad FACT, is that the 2020 games now already have that BIG * attached.

Whether they go on or NOT the 2020 games will not be a normal Olympics, way past that point already with all the disruptions for many aspects of the games.

I mean will there even be enough airplanes to fly people here...…….

What's your point? The apartments get handed back to the contractors and work begins immediately after the scheduled end of the games. If you're trying to suggest that they can shave off an entire year's worth of construction time and still meet their 2023 deadline I think you're being wildly unrealistic. And they cannot rip up their contracts and push back delivery to 2024.

IOC is like the WHO in that they'll wait until everyone else has abandoned them and then make the obvious decision forced off their money supply. This level of corruption is why they have lost so many host cities and nations and why it's been only controlling societies interested in hosting.

Abe is digging himself a bigger and bigger hole as is starting to appear the world as "stubborn" (for lack of a better word.)

HIs thoughts should be with the athletes and their ability to train properly.

As it stands now very few can. If Abe still holds them it will probably go down as one of the most boring Olympics with the fewest number of records being broken.

You wrote that families will be moving into the apartments after August and I was just pointing out to you it isn't true. It is you who is wrongly assuming that if the olympics is not held this year then new condos have to be built by 2021. I don't think the 2023 timeframe for buyers to move in is impossible to me even if the olympics is postponed to 2021.

The Japanese are hardworking and have shown on many occasions they can meet the tightest of construction schedules. The national stadium and the submerged road that was fixed in one week are good examples.

I suppose anything is possible if you throw enough money at it, but this seems overly optimistic. These large construction projects are planned years in advance with military precision. The sub-contractors and the manpower needed have already have been secured well in advance. You can't just call off thousands of workers and complex chains of contractors and sub-contractors and expect to re-hire them next year. Many will be commited to other projects. At this point the developers will just want to recover their money and repay their loans. They have little incentive to bend over backwards and risk the success of the biggest real-estate development in Japanese history.

I'm not familiar with these specific incidents but there's obviously a difference between a developer who's obligated to cure some defect in a newly constructed stadium and a developer who is just being asked to delay a project for national pride.

Well, it is true that they are moving in after August, but that doesn't necessarily mean immediately (ie September 2020). Sorry if I wasn't clearer on that. In any case, my point was just that these apartments are set to be re-purposed after August.
