There are already too many tourists on the island, don't need anymore media people from outside to come and infect a population that is mostly elderly.

If only the IOC had as much sense...

Shame on coca cola, nissay and other torch relay sponsors to keep silent and to continue this farce.

one leg cancelled, more to follow and the games must be postponed to 2022.

Imagine that! Cancellation during a PANDEMIC!

The first part of your statement is true! The second half however is not even close! The population here is far from being "mostly elderly"

Around 80% of the population is between the ages of 0 to 65!

These runners spent years to prepare for this once in a lifetime event. It's not fair that this opportunity is taken away from them.

Those "runners" themselves agreed to it as well! They arent stupid, the island is being pushed to the brink with numerous cases and they know, better than Suga it seems, that people's lives take precedent over any relay!

The Okinawan main island needs to close its border to the fools bearing torches!!!

Or they are just some talento who wants their 15 minutes of facetime/fame on TV and will take PR anywhere they can get it

Yubaru, thanks for the link, very informative but no matter what city I click on for Okinawa it keeps showing the same pie graph, so I think it's only representative of the total population of Okinawa prefecture, and not Miyako. Age group circa 2015 shows as you correctly pointed out 80% 0-65, but if you total it up it's roughly 1.5 million which would be the total population of Okinawa, not Miyako. Anyways, thanks for the link and keeping me on my toes, I'll try and find the Japanese equivalent for Miyako's avg age. Either case, not good to continue with these games.

Why? Is there a pandemic or something?

Would have saved a lot of time if you had specified Miyako Island in the first place, as the article discusses both Miyako and the main island.

And you would still be wrong about Miyako as well!

Wasn't the whole schtick of this torch run was that the flame never stops and does not extinguish? Well, not any more I guess. Welcome to the great 2021 Tokyo Olympics!
