Perhaps it's the cardboard beds.

Oh no I forgot, you are in the 5 star hotel paid for by us.

over troubled Tokyo Olympics

Anyone can start asking why keep insisting doing super spreader event on international scale?

29 ( +31 / -2 )

Bach’s probably watching too much ‘late night JTV ;; ) yet, apparently it’s NOT the News.

9 ( +13 / -4 )

He's troubled because no Olympics means no money to line his pockets.

Cancel the Olympics Japan!

36 ( +39 / -3 )

Who really cares? He has shown his total disregard for the people of Japan! His "promise" of it being totally safe already broken, and the games have not even started. He needs to go home!

31 ( +32 / -1 )

Perhaps he forgot about some ‘sleep medication’ he could have packed in his luggage. Someone needs to check for him? :

Claimed it helped with insomnia.

If you're curious about his room:

13 ( +15 / -2 )

we did it for the athletes.

As with "support the troops", it's a way of shifting focus away from unpopular policy and blatantly corrupt leadership.

22 ( +23 / -1 )

Doesn’t mention Mr. Coates ‘sleeping arrangements’. Isn’t he equally concerned?

3 ( +7 / -4 )

Many people in the world have sleepless nights because of real serious problems, which can not be solved by just canceling the problems.

17 ( +19 / -2 )

"Cancelation was never an option for us. The IOC never abandons the athletes... we did it for the athletes."

Does anyone really buy this crap?

Its all about the billions that some will make if the event goes ahead.

Would love, along with 80% of japanese people, to see this event postponed or cancelled altogether, and show this clown that he has no power in Japan, as he is convinced.

Its time to stop this humiliation towards Japan.

20 ( +21 / -1 )

Perhaps this article will add to those "sleepless nights" in his luxury 5 star accomodations. The U.S. gymnastics team has left the Olympic Village for a hotel which poses very serious questions - below...

(The article was shown in a different thread is huge and speaks much louder and to the point than any of us here can on Japan today. It deserves to be associated with this thread)

https://nypost.com/2021/07/20/u-s-womens-gymnastics-team-bolts-olympic-village

It says about everything one needs to know.

This is absolutely the biggest story related to the Olympics to date but I am sure there are more to come.

Is anyone going to challenge the IOC or JOC with the above questions/statements?

16 ( +17 / -1 )

Aww, poor man, someone give him his security blanket and his anxiety pills. He really should be anxious, if the Olympics does in fact (and I'm betting that it will) cause a spike in COVID-19 cases, he should be one of the people who must pay.

11 ( +12 / -1 )

If you're curious about his room:

https://your-magazine.net/ioc-tokyo-olympics-hotel/

3 million yen per night. Sickening.

20 ( +22 / -2 )

He made his bed. Now he has to sleep in it.

8 ( +10 / -2 )

I would say this is product of a guilty conscience (not everybody chooses to put in risk the health and lives of a whole city just for profits) but it is most likely just lies.

18 ( +19 / -1 )

Who is he waving to?

7 ( +8 / -1 )

Bach says he was upset by the postponement, which occurred over a year ago. He doesn't admit any sense of worry over actually holding the Olympics during the worst part of the pandemic.

The man seems like a perfect partner for dead-eyed Suga.

13 ( +14 / -1 )

Cry me a river. I hope he doesn’t earn a single yen or penny from this she continues to have many sleepless nights for a long time to come. He cares for no one, so why should we care?

6 ( +7 / -1 )

The IOC never abandons the athletes... we did it for the athletes

No you didn't, you did it for the 4 billion in broadcasting rights.

15 ( +17 / -2 )

TOKYO — The chief of the Tokyo 2020 organizing committee on Tuesday did not rule out canceling the Olympics if COVID-19 cases spiked, as more athletes tested positive for the virus and sponsors ditched plans to attend Friday's opening ceremony.

Asked at a news conference if the global sporting showpiece might still be canceled, Toshiro Muto said he would keep an eye on infection numbers and liaise with other organizers if necessary.

"We will continue discussions if there is a spike in cases," said Muto.

"We have agreed that based on the coronavirus situation, we will convene five-party talks again. At this point, the coronavirus cases may rise or fall, so we will think about what we should do when the situation arises."

By Ju-min Park and Sakura Murakami, Reuters | Posted - July 20, 2021 at 8:32 a.m.

So which is it King Bach? No chance of cancellation and zero risk, or reality?

It appears that Bach has learned to lie just like a recently deposed/disgraced US leader.

5 ( +6 / -1 )

Are we supposed to feel sorry for this guy?...

10 ( +11 / -1 )

I sympathise with him sleeping and a mattress stuffed with blood money is not very comfortable. Sometimes a gold coin digs into your back.

8 ( +9 / -1 )

3 million yen per night. Sickening.

No that money is spent to support the athletes.

The IOC never abandons the athletes... we did it for the athletes.

Did what, spend US$ 26 Billion for the athletes?? (and expected to be several billion higher when all the Tokyo Olympic costs are counted)

Just think about this a second. There are only 11,000 athletes. That's over $2.5 million per athlete!! And yet, none of these athletes are paid (and at best, may win a medal worth a max of $800).

And this doesn't include the untold billions that go directly from sponsors and TV rights directly to the IOC.

I bet the vast majority of athletes would quit their sport in a second if offered 2.5 million instead.

8 ( +9 / -1 )

You'll sleep much better once you cancel the olympics and go back home, you doofus.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

I am wondering if the fact that the U.S. Gymnastics team is going to further complicate Bach's ability to sleep. There are several questions which will likely keep him up at night which would include the fact that the gymnastics team leaving, sanctioned by the USOC, implies the athletes do not think the Olympic village is safe. I would also have a difficult time sleeping if confronted with this dilemma.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

Cry me a river...

4 ( +5 / -1 )

His hotel suite is ¥3,000,000 a night.

https://your-magazine.net/ioc-tokyo-olympics-hotel/

it is more like an office for entertainment and business.

must have a huge staff for maid service.

12 ( +13 / -1 )

Awww, my heart bleeds for you. What courage, sacrificing yourself for the athletes like that.

Hopefully your modest accomodations in Japan will help you sleep.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

Enough of this person already.

5 ( +7 / -2 )

If he’s sleeping 7 hours his hotel room is about ¥7,000 per minute.

10 ( +11 / -1 )

Maybe the guilt of profiting off a nation's misery is finally getting to him. If so good. Wasn't it his decision not to cancel the games? Any fallout from holding the games falls squarely on his shoulders. And he knows that.

Having said that, I personally don't believe his comment about his sleepless nights. I don't believe the man has a conscience. Simple as that

Thanks for that. What a shambles. Good for USW gymanastics for walking away from the horrorshow at the Olympic Village, sorry for teams without money or clout to do the same.

Stephen Wade AP's comments here on relationship of IOC & Toyota very revealing:

3 ( +5 / -2 )

Vile guy - making such statements expecting people to have sympathy for him. Absolutely out of touch with ground reality

6 ( +7 / -1 )

Aaawwww shucks!!

I'm all broken up about poor Mr Bach and his tossing and turning.

Of course, my husband and I have both been diagnosed with insomnia, depression, and anxiety attacks thanks to the impact of COVID on our lives - an impact which will be potentially worsened by the Olympic Games if it becomes the super-spreader event some are predicting.

But I can bet Mr Bach hasn't lost any sleep over that.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

My heart bleeds for you. Bring out the violins.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Oh, poor baby! In your 5-star hotel with your every need attended to. Since you are so good at showing empathy with the pain of others, I am sure the world will come together to make everything OK for you.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

Your sleepless nights were not spent in an ICU ward.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

IOC president and aspiring comedian too…

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Oh! Poor baby! Cry me a river. At least you, Bach, are sleepless in a 5 star luxury suite, while the athletes sleep on cardboard with possible exposure to COVID. Everyone else here, who have been here for many years, has to deal with COVID with the rest of the population, waiting for our vaccinations.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

I learn more interesting stuff each day from @alfie than from the articles themselves :-). Thanks.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

I would insist Bach and Coates reside in the Olympic Village, where there is "zero” risk of athletes passing on the virus to Japanese or other residents of the village.

Bach and Coates can eat the food sleep on cardboard , in support/solidarity of the athletes. what good for the goose is good for the gander.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Sleepless nights in a luxury hotel at other people's expense. Must be tough.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

If there is ever a movie made about these games, we can use poor Mr. Bach’s insomnia and his disregard for human welfare to create a title:

Sleepless in 死に至る

Simple solution:

Quit Olympics

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Bach admits 'sleepless nights' over troubled Tokyo Olympics

Awww didums! Don’t worry just think of the millions you will be stashing away into your account regardless of the human toll and you will sleep like a baby. I hope this Olympics is a lesson for those cities considering hosting them…don’t!

2 ( +3 / -1 )

I’m not sure the athletes, coaches etc who will now miss the games due to isolating or not being able to prepare properly will agree with him. There will be more in this situation, too. They will be thinking ‘if only it had been postponed to 2022 I may have be able to get a medal’

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Try counting dollar signs.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Look like Abe and Suga will get their wish. They will be remembered for bringing the Olympics to Tokyo. Though it won't be the kind of memory they were hoping for. A complete shambles. Billions in needed tax funds spent to trash Japan's global image. Thanks loads, Abe.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

"We can finally see at the end of the dark tunnel,"

For him maybe, for the average person the tunnel hasn't even started yet. There are at least 70 games cases (probably way more given Japan's track record) so far and the games haven't even started yet.

We will be feeling the impact of these games for months, likely years. I would not be remotely surprised if this were taught alongside the bubble economy in Japan in the future, as an example of abject failures that held the country back.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

"We can finally see at the end of the dark tunnel," said Bach, adding: "Cancelation was never an option for us. The IOC never abandons the athletes... we did it for the athletes."

How can he say such rubbish and expect people to believe him............

He is such a liar, he isnt doing it for the athletes at all , he is doing it for the money !!

3 ( +4 / -1 )

It's not incorrect to say that 55% of respondents in the Asahi Shimbun poll said they didn't agree with holding the Olympics this year. However, the full picture is that only 33% agreed. Even more tellingly, 68% said the Olympics couldn't be held safely, which suggests that most of the 12% who neither agreed nor disagreed explicitly don't want the games this summer either.

Even in an article supposedly critical of the event it's still possible to see the glass half full.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

"We can finally see at the end of the dark tunnel," said Bach, adding: "Cancelation was never an option for us. The IOC never abandons the athletes... we did it for the athletes."

Come again?? The IOC never abandons the athletes??

Then WHY did you have them sign a statement saying they wouldn't hold the IOC responsible if they got the virus??

Isn't that EXACTLY what that is?

8 ( +9 / -1 )

Sleepless nights over troubled olympics, Bach? Drink a bottle of the finest French wine with a handful of benzos, you'll be sleeping in no time. The people of Japan will be grateful for sure.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

When Bach, insisted, the Olympics must go on, no matter the cost, apparently, at a minimum, it held double meaning. It requires coin to pay for his luxurious lifestyle. And with nonchalance, cliche and artifice he addresses the enormous issues in regards to being the individual responsible for an event that will eventually spread the variant of SARSCoV-2 throughout Japan and the world. He is literally, willing to kill, in order for the games to take place. That is not hyperbole.

The spectacle that he so embraces and which endows him with status and power is an absurdity that will by intention cause sorrow to the many. Let alone the financial costs borne by the Japanese which will not be confined to the almost 30 billion dollars, but the impacts on the economy, that will far exceed that enormous sum. That is not an abstraction. Consider the harm to small, local, independent businesses in your neighborhood or that have been long existent and are a foundation of local culture.

What is unfolding is a disaster in motion, over-lorded by an arrogant, callous individual who along with Suga offers bromides and clichés as some manner of concern - all the while luxuriating in pomposity.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

"Cancelation was never an option for us. The IOC never abandons the athletes... we did it for the athletes."

Does anyone really buy this crap?

Not sure if they believe it but it has been the mantra if certain people here along with *think of the children"....

And browsing through certain Canadian sites and UK sites I recognise the near exact comments posted on them

Like " the athletes have worked all their lives for this" " the games are needed to lift spirits" " the children.....".

18,000 athletes, the vast majority will be eliminated within the first few days if not the first day they compete.

3/4 of all medals will go to a handful of rich power countries ( 20 countries took over 3/4 of all medals last Olympics).

18,000 Athlete's dreams!!!! Who cares!

I worry about my livelihood under the SOE, that of my friends and neighbours, the hundreds of thousands of Japanese workers and business owner that have lost and more will lose their jobs and businesses the more this SOE drags on.

An a main reason for it dragging on is the Olympics, instead of placing all resources behind vaccination, testing, helping businesses, etc .

The government pushed by Bach and the IOC played games trying everything they could to pretend all was fine, so the games could proceed.

Honestly his behaviour and that if the Japanese government borders on criminal disregard for life.

5 ( +6 / -1 )

It may help Bach's sleeplessness if he would actually go to the Olympic Village and spend 2 or 3 nights there. I believe this is a relevant request (relevant to this article) as he may feel uneasy about his uncertainty about the accomodations and safety thereof.

If Mr. Bach would take it upon himself to stay in the Olympic village I believe the athletes and the Japanese public would be reassured of his statement of "Zero Risk".

How about it Mr. Bach? Why don't you go the Olympic Village and this may help relieve your anxiety after you experience the "zero risk" conditions.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

I will cry you a river Bach. Unbelievable arrogance.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

Bach, it’s called cognitive dissonance. You have sleepless nights because you know you are trying to force a square peg into a round hole, that you’re ignoring the science, that you are making promises you can’t keep, that you are courting disaster by flirting with COVID-19, that you are endangering the world, not just Japan, and that the illness and potential deaths of people will be on your conscience. You have sleepless nights because you know what you are doing is wrong.

But not to worry. You’re going to have many more sleepless nights as the Olympics begin and you won’t be able to contain the virus.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

This is the biggest joke of the century. Sleepless nights?? More like thinking about how much money and benefits he would enjoy.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

On a more serious note - Bach would be out of Japan shortly with his bank account padded and safe but it will be residents in Japan who will be left behind holding the bag of these games costs overruns

Recent news on Mainichi - link below

https://mainichi.jp/english/articles/20210720/p2a/00m/0na/025000c

In a typica Japanese manner no one wants to make a decision and being pushed out as to who will bear how much costs

What remains a certainity is that it will be Japanese residents who will bear this costs in terms of additional taxes for years to come - as if this corona and vaccine debacle was not enough suffering on the residents….

5 ( +5 / -0 )

Virusex: "I would say this is product of a guilty conscience" but some people like him don't even have a Conscience

3 ( +3 / -0 )

@BigYen

All these comments and not a single one showing any sympathy for the IOC overlord. It would be great if he read them all, but of course he won’t. That’s yet another privilege of living in an extremely expensive and luxurious ivory tower.

One must wonder if any of the people Bach surrounds himself with read any of this and how they feel about it. If he is surounded by people who are simply "yes men" or "yes women" then he probably hears none of this as he is existing in a vacuum of filtered information in that case.

I would have a hard time believing everyone thinks what he says and does is OK. This would make it hard for him to sleep.

In an ideal world he would sleep better by spending a few nights in the village and living like the athletes do but he does not. Therefore it must impact his ability to sleep when he reads that the US gymnasts, who actually live in the village, do not feel safe enough to stay there and relocate to a hotel. This would also cause me to lose sleep so perhaps I am undestanding things better now.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

I hope Bach also has nightmares, as the Olympics he pushed in spite of the pandemic is truly a nightmare.

With all the scientists pointing to the same idea about risk in holding the Olympics now, the IOC refused to listen. There will be other calamaties in the future. The IOC has to have plan C and D in the future when planning for the next Olympics. You just don't charge blindly and hope for the best. Calculate the risk. Listen to those outside the Olympics. Covid is not just a flu or a cold. Listen to Mother Science.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

@anon

Some gems from the article you referenced (https://www.asahi.com/ajw/articles/14399314)

The government has secured about 2,000 hotel rooms in the greater Tokyo metropolitan area for the self-isolation of Japanese nationals arriving at Narita.

There are now concerns about a hotel room shortage because more Japanese studying abroad are expected to return home for their summer break.

A government source said 500 hotel rooms that had been secured for returning Japanese have been turned over to those related to the Olympics in response to a request from the organizing committee.

The shortage of hotel rooms has led the government to move arriving Japanese nationals to Chubu Airport in Aichi Prefecture for self-isolation there.

In other words, tax paying Japanese citizens - sorry - Prime Minister Bach has sequestered the hotel rooms for you.

Foreign arrivals clearly connected to the Olympics have been sent back home because of insufficient documentation. And many who do arrive with the proper paperwork are allowed into the country even though they are obviously not among those needed to organize the Games.

Sorry Japanese citizens. Do not come home this summer so we can hold our Olympics. We need to do this (sacrafice) for Bach and the IOC.

There are now concerns about a hotel room shortage because more Japanese studying abroad are expected to return home for their summer break.

Bach, so you cannot even manage the proper documentation for those coming? Your incompetence is to the point where people with incorrect paperwork come in? The Japanese Government has to share responsibility for this as well.

Foreign arrivals clearly connected to the Olympics have been sent back home because of insufficient documentation. And many who do arrive with the proper paperwork are allowed into the country even though they are obviously not among those needed to organize the Games.

YES - I would lose sleep too!!! But I have a conscience; something Bach obviously is lacking.

crazy town:

https://www.yahoo.com/news/tokyo-insanely-deploying-army-half-161830291.html

Holy cow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They are actually telling people to not take the 2nd shot because they may miss working due to potential side effects. The most selfish of the selfish. Miss your 2nd shot for Bach and the IOC!

In June, Tokyo quietly sent out a missive asking workers to delay their second shot until after the Olympics. Why keep volunteers from getting fully vaccinated? Because “doses received during the Games, and potential fevers caused by side effects to the second dosage could hinder operations supporting the Olympics,” read an email from The Bureau of Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020 Preparation, sent to the inboxes of Tokyo 2020 staff members last month.

Bach - is it this you are losing sleep over?!?! It is absolutely unbelievable!!!!!! Risk your health or risk reducing the effectiveness of the vaccine for the Olympics!!!!

Olympic supporters: please tell us why this is OK.
