State sponsored doping in the name of national prestige. They should have been banned en mass ala S. Africa in the 1980s

Just wait until they get up to speed on using transgenders.....

""Official Olympic paperwork and TV graphics will attribute Russian results to “ROC” but won't spell out the Russian Olympic Committee's name in full. Gold medalists will get music by Russian composer Tchaikovsky instead of the country's national anthem.""

SICK and SAD to see these amazing athletes win the gold and have their country's national anthem played!!!

If you think this is just the Russians, I believe you are very much mistaken.

You mean the U.S., right? From what I understand, trans folks do not do well in Russia and I suspect it unlikely that we will see many Russian transgenders on their Olympic team. But, then, the 'sports page' is as foreign to me as is Russia so...seems just vicarious entertainment for fat, lazy people...and the Olympics itself seems mostly a competition not of Humans, per se, but of well oiled, biological machines whose only purpose is to inch out some other biological machine for ephemeral 'national pride'. I suppose I'm just not smart enough to see the point and I'm sure someone will help me with that...

Shame on the IOC for allowing this nation of serial, systemic state-sponsored dopers to compete under any name.

Russia cannot be trusted to be honest and not cheat.

CORRECTION

I see that this years hostess club “models” have hit town...

2 ( +13 / -11 )

Yes. More Russian women’s volleyball team please.

1 ( +9 / -8 )

If they really wanted to fool anyone they'd give all the Russian athletes big fake mustaches to wear

10 ( +11 / -1 )

Why do they keep letting this doping country participate? Ban them completely if you have any integrity or respect for the other athletes.

10 ( +13 / -3 )

How not to wear a mask! Must have seen the chin-covering oyaji photos in Tokyo.

11 ( +13 / -2 )

Russian Olympic Committee daihyou evidently was not briefed on the complexities of wearing a mask.

8 ( +9 / -1 )

I have no doubt that there is a lot of doping and cover up by Russia but I think their biggest problem is they just don't have the better drugs and masking agents like a certain other country.

Now let's see Lance Armstrong was Russian?

8 ( +11 / -3 )

Did they bring replacement urine samples with them to swap before testing?

2 ( +5 / -3 )

Problem with banning Russia, China, or the US (they all cheat systematically to an extent) outright is the revenue each country puts into the system. No Russia means Nike earns less money which means NBC/Universal has less story building material, so the games look less valuable and the distribution contract money goes down. None of these countries will absent from the games unless they boycott them.

What part of 'wear a face mask when you come to Japan to participate in the Olympics' does the athlete in the photo not understand?

Didn't the IOC et al. stipulate this?! If they can't enforce the rules when they first arrive at the airport then we're well and truly .....

1 ( +4 / -3 )

The Russian athletes selected to carry the flag at the opening ceremony are the sprinter Roidstakeasecondoff, and the female weightlifter Whodyanickanollockoff.

IOC is absolutely disgraceful, they will bend the rules to get an extra buck. Time to throw them out.

When will the use of media to smear and politicize the olympics going. It Ok, it is our media reporting it, it must be true. The other media is reporting to its people that it a smear campaign to prevent them from taking part so they can earn more medals. We are just pawns in game played by a select few using their media. He who has and controls the media controls the narrative and controls the masses. Did I say Mass Media. Yes media to shape the thinking and control the masses. Is Balco lab defunct or still operating and doing what it does best ?

Can someone let the athlete in the photo know that it is summer in Tokyo and she does not need to wear a chin warmer.

I would also suggest she wears a mask, but that may upset the anti-maskers.

5 ( +7 / -2 )

Wear your mask properly or leave!

ROC, Republic of China looks set to be confused about just how many medals they will be winning.

A sad situation once again pandering to powerful nations to let them compete when they are under a ban.

All we can expect is that they are cheating, and it's only a question of whether or not we will figure it out.

Their government has decided that it's more important to cheat and win, then to come together as humanity and compete under the agreed upon rules.

Individuals from some countries have done this, and that's egregious. I don't think there's a word for what the government of Russia has done. There's no offense that has ever been at that level of egregiousness to have the unique word it deserves for just how offensive the actions of the government are.

But we keep letting them compete, so it's starting to become our own fault. And now they're even allowed to wear their national colors.

Don't need them, don't want them, can't have un-doped competition when they're part of it.

Someone should host the "doping games" and see what all these people can do at max doped levels.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

The only difference between Russian doping and US, Jamaican, French, Canadian, UK and many other countries doping is that a state sports organization is "known" to have been involved. Not that the Russians are any more doped. The use of performance enhancing drugs is endemic in many sports worldwide.

People would be more wary of the Chinese agency than the Russians

half measures and half truths. What a joke. Just ban Russia

In any sport involving strength or endurance, this is pretty much what you already have.

Victor Conte, the head of Balco labs, who knows a thing or two about doping and evading the pathetic efforts of testers, estimates that 80% AT LEAST are on something.
