So much for the IOC "bubble".

This is expected. Thousands of people will enter and leave Japan during these Games, and this virus has been around for 18 months.

What do you expect?

No mention if the athlete had been vaccinated or even exhibited any illness.

Is this even news?

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

And the US--as of today, has a much higher percentage of its population vaccinated compared to Japan.

Agreed, but the US had about a 3 month vaccination rollout advantage. Plus, Japanese corporate culture requires meetings to decide about meetings, then meetings to decide about meeting topics.

New Zealand and Australia have blocked internal travel and been protective like a grandma to a new grandchild in this cause. What surprises me is that the people stood for the govt lockdowns and haven't thrown the representatives out of office.

I haven't seen much about Taiwan in the news except that they assumed China was lying from the start. Who better to know?

Compared to the USA, Japan has been handling COVID much better. Even in the last month.

At the same time, Japan is an island; I think geography might be an advantage to a degree. Maybe Australia, New Zealand, and Taiwan can be said to have been handling Covid much better than Japan---but have they been implementing the same policies as Japan?

And the US--as of today, has a much higher percentage of its population vaccinated compared to Japan.

So ... 6 people tested positive out of how many thousands who didn't and entered Japan fine?

805,917 infections and 14,855 coronavirus since the start.

~ 1500 new infections are reported daily. The number of infections reported this week is up 4.9% over last week. This is the same as the world-wide increase.

Compared to the USA, Japan has been handling COVID much better. Even in the last month.

https://ourworldindata.org/coronavirus/country/united-states?country=USA~JPN#daily-confirmed-cases-how-do-they-compare-to-other-countries

Cases per million people:

USA: 39:87

Japan: 12.30

Confirmed deaths per million people:

USA: 0.68

Japan: 0.2

Just trying to provide some perspective.

Watch as a few athletes who are favored to challenge Japanese athletes who might otherwise win a Gold medal suddenly start testing positive for Covid at Narita on the way in...

3 ( +4 / -1 )

So, was he vaccinated? Were the others in the party vaccinated?

-2 ( +3 / -5 )

Japan should be testing its own population but the government knows it would find thousands of asymptomatic carriers and would have to cancel

Haven't you heard that testing is a precious and scarce resource that can just be wasted on citizens. Aliens are highly suspected and need to be tested.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

How many until Suga cancels the Olympics?

Even if 100% of the athletes tested positive, he still wouldnt cancel.

5 ( +6 / -1 )

Who really cares anymore?!

0 ( +4 / -4 )

This is going to keep happening! How many times is it going to take before they cancel this madness?

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

“How many until Suga cancels the Olympics?”

He can’t, only the IOC can.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

In all truth I think the incoming Olympic hordes are less of a threat to Japan than Japan is to the incomers!

5 ( +8 / -3 )

It's not just Tokyo. The problem is the athletes all need to practice before the Games begin and they are doing that in various towns all over Japan. A perfect way to spread Covid nationwide. Can they really catch all cases at Haneda or Narita? Doubtful....

7 ( +8 / -1 )

Drove through Shibuya ect today, herds out there. Give all olymipians suica cards and let’em out there it ain’t gonna make no diff.

3 ( +5 / -2 )

One. Over the 3,000+ people that land every single day in Narita/Haneda and are all without exception tested, Olympics or not Olympics, one was today a athlete.

In the meantime in Tokyo on the same day, 518 people were tested positive on a Sunday, a day when almost nobody gets tested unless they show very strong symptoms. Their close contacts are not even going to be considered for testing unless they admit to have licked each other face.

Maybe three cases related to the Olympics this week versus over 8,000 local transmissions. Focusing on those three is surreal.

@Reckless

So it was neither a he nor a she? Interesting Olympics in many ways.

Surely you’ve heard of using “they” for an unidentified person? It’s been standard thing in English for decades if not hundreds of years now…

@Hakman

Translation:

"Healthy 30-year-old tests positive for virus that has a virtually 100% of NOT killing him/her; health check at Japanese immigration port of entry works exactly as designed."

But I guess that translation isn't acceptable -- it's more acceptable to have one that's hyper-neurotic about COVID and tops it off with a healthy layer of Japan-bashing.

Your translation is not acceptable as it is false. The survival rate for healthy 30 year olds is very high but not 100%. Also if you recall the Ugandan team (including one infected person) travelled to Osaka after landing at Narita. Finally if this person infects others who are older or less healthy then is that acceptable to you? Perhaps you see this as necessary collateral damage so the glorious olympics can carry on.

I would imagine you would agree with Abe when he says anyone who criticizes the Olympics (including Japanese) are anti Japan. This would apply to my wife, all of our in laws, my Japanese employees, etc.

Showing concern over an international event being held during a Pandemic which will bring nearly 100,000 people into Japan is "racism" in your mind it seems.

9 ( +12 / -3 )

Oh, so the Serbian team have srrived early. So has Canada. I guess everyone else is too.

So much for 'arrive just prior to your event, then leave.' Hashimoto is disgusting.

12 ( +14 / -2 )

How many Japanese athletes will test positive if tested with the same veracity

8 ( +12 / -4 )

I reckon it was caught at the airport. Japan is unsafe.

I hope it wasn't transmitted at the airport! That would be a disaster.

Agree about Japan being unsafe, though. Take care everyone!

8 ( +12 / -4 )

The Nanto city government said that none of its personnel who went to pick up the team at the airport had any contact with them.

Uhhh, isn’t that what picking up people from the airport means?

To have contact, meet and transport the individuals?

7 ( +8 / -1 )

It goes to prove that even if you are vaccinated, you can still get infected and infect others. I bet the IOC is trying to downplay these issues. This elitist and corrupt committee should never set foot in any country including Bach. We should call them the 'untouchables ' - they will never be held to account.

In years to come we will look back at the Tokyo Olympics and wonder why we were so stupid for letting the games go ahead in the midst of a global pandemic.

Our kid and grandkids will study about it and think we were such selfish bar stewards.

I understand the sentiment, but hopefully those kids and grandkids will learn about the role of greed and money in the world and what they result in.

(Then again that presupposes that we will learn anything from this train wreck. I have my doubts).

14 ( +17 / -3 )

How many until Suga cancels the Olympics?

it's not an Olympics anymore if all atheletes end up in an hospital.

We all heard the IOC. “Barring armageddon”, I think they said.

I doubt this even registers on their “armageddon-meter” yet. “Serbian rower? Nobody watches that. No loss of profit. Full steam ahead!”

Course if a super-famous (read: profitable) athlete tests positive upon arrival, thus selfishly denying the IOC potential broadcast earnings, then the meter may shift a little…

12 ( +14 / -2 )

@It is not that the common people are stupid, we have no choice1

Eerily apposite name for a host town: なんと!陽性!?

4 ( +7 / -3 )

It would appear given all that we have seen up to now that J gov had not much power in postponing the olympics. But then they haven't shown any power in anything throughout this whole pandemic other than powering through meetings for deciding when they might announce possible steps that might be considered in the future. Having 200 countries' teams and as many media people .. it's like hearding cats.

Unfortunately this could simply mean they wore masks and are not considered to be "contacts", even if they were for hours in close proximity.

Well that is what the public testing told the directors of my daughter's company after they requested all employees be tested after 2 were found to have covid-19.

The company had to hire a private lab to test the everyone and found 2 more with Covid.

Everyone that tested negative were to remain at home for 2 weeks and tested again before returning to work.

The company had to pay all the testing as the under that government guidelines no one qualified to be tested.

14 ( +19 / -5 )

A lot more to follow in the days and weeks ahead, no doubt.

18 ( +20 / -2 )

At this rate Japanese athletes will have the advantage over all incoming foreign athletes coming in testing positive and not being able to practice until kickoff

Here we go again
