"These claims of indirect effects are pretty unsubstantiated," Bach said, adding he is not aware of any figures supporting them.

no figures? oh, well, that's alright then.... no effect on the real world at all then....

It wasn't perfect.

But

It wasn't the major disaster and failure so so many predicted.

-18 ( +11 / -29 )

This has been my favorite summer Olympics ever. The athletes have put on an amazing performance for us. I really appreciate them.

-21 ( +8 / -29 )

'far exceeded' his expectations

That also number of covid cases in Tokyo and Japan but the games was being held so who will care, right?

I agree

Far away from a super spreader event.

*the Olympic Games are coming at the moment when the world is longing for such a *symbol of hope

Let's retire this silly notion, OK?

23 ( +28 / -5 )

The athletes have put on an amazing performance for us. I really appreciate them.

I hate to tell you this, but the athletes didn’t do it for you. They did it for themselves.

And the IOC didn’t do it for world peace, or hope, or to show victory over the coronavirus and the 2011 disaster. They did it for money.

And we all got suckered into paying for it.

Cruel — particularly when staff at Japan’s Ministry of Health are selectively choosing which few individuals to bully. What if a person can’t endure these public attacks?

The number is up to four now. Why were only these four targeted when Japan’s own Ministry of Health has reported that “about 6,600 people, or roughly 29% of travelers self-quarantining on any given day after entering Japan, do not respond to smartphone app notifications used to confirm their whereabouts.” (See source below.)

Trolls all over the internet are now mining these four individuals’ social media and reporting it all over the Net. It’s downright cruel of Japan’s ministry to orchestrate this!

Bach’s lack of intelligence and greed far exceeded my expectations. What a complete jerk

28 ( +31 / -3 )

Like others I just hope this gets over by tomorrow and finally the govt can start focusing all thier time, energy, efforts & money on speeding up the vaccination

Lastly for people claiming it went smoothly & no escalation in cases, I sincerely hope that does turns out to be true - we will know in coming weeks when these people go back to thier respective countries not carrying the virus.

does anyone know what happens to 43,000 media personnel between the period of 9 Aug and 24 Aug (start of para olympucs)? Do they go back & return to Japan or they continue to be here? If they remain in Japan I worry it will be a big party time for all as they are free to roam around all over Japan without any restrictions?

8 ( +10 / -2 )

Bach is paying ( or someone is) a fortune for dry cleaning-he always looks to be sweating profusely!

2 ( +5 / -3 )

he says this every olympics

21 ( +22 / -1 )

Tremendous efforts were put by Japanese organizers.

-9 ( +6 / -15 )

The question that I really want to ask Bach and Suga. How many Japanese were turned away from hospitalization because beds and medical staff that were were solely allocated to the Olympics could not be used?

14 ( +16 / -2 )

International Olympic Committee chief Thomas Bach said Friday the Tokyo Games have "far exceeded" his expectations with two days to go

Learned that the way to defeat a polygraph (lie detector) test was to be answering a different question in your mind, truthfully. In this case Herr Bach is referring to his bank account. Probably will receive a windfall for pulling this off without any major catastrophe. The pain for the populace will come later once the Olympics have passed from the front page.

12 ( +13 / -1 )

I try to live by the principle that "you can always look for the good in a person if you try". This man really, really pushes the limits of that concept.

12 ( +15 / -3 )

Bach says Tokyo Olympics have 'far exceeded' his expectations

In covid cases? that's about the only thing that would make sense.

8 ( +11 / -3 )

I cannot see how anybody can pass any comment until a month after Obon.

If there is no increase in deaths or people in hospital by then around Japan then Olympics organizers have done well.

Still should have waited till next year though as IOC offered to do and Abe refused.

4 ( +6 / -2 )

Hey, they exceeded mine too.

I never expected that one of the composers would have to quit because he was a psychopath at school and boasted about it.

I never expected that a power-crazed oyaji would yank an Olympic athlete off her bike.

I never expected that the start of the triathlon would be blocked by a boat

I never expected that the allegedly impregnable, totally safe, Olympic village would record close on 400 positive Covid cases.

Yet somehow my expectations were indeed exceeded!

20 ( +21 / -1 )

Bach is rhinking, “now i can get my nobel peace prize

5 ( +7 / -2 )

Bach says Tokyo Olympics have 'far exceeded' his expectations

And the reactions of the anti- Olympics crowd are exactly as expected. Any positive Olympics news is like waving a red flag at a bull.

Sorry it hasn’t been the superspreader you were all hoping for.

-12 ( +3 / -15 )

I guess that means Bach made his millions. Objective achieved.

11 ( +13 / -2 )

I love the Olympics but not Bach. I still think the games should not have happened since the Delta Variant is amazingly spreading across Japan and that is what we need to focus on. We need to save people lives and save peoples businesses.

Bach thinks of himself as some kind of authority over the population.

Crazy.

10 ( +13 / -3 )

Sorry it hasn’t been the superspreader you were all hoping for.

Typical overemotional reaction from an Olympic fanboi.

It is actually possible to hold a somewhat nuanced position on this.

For instance: in the last week or so, positive cases in Tokyo have gone up very sharply. It is debatable as to how much of this is due to the influence of the Olympics, and the Japanese people themselves must shoulder at least some of the responsibility.

However, the very act of holding them in spineless deference to the IOC and US broadcasting networks will have given the impression to a lot of people that there is therefore no risk in going out and getting hammered daily because, hey, we're hosting the world's biggest sports event, and there is no way that the government would ever do that if they thought there was a risk to the public, right?

The promise of a "totally safe and secure" games was proven to be false by the nearly 400 cases reported in relation to the Olympic village and assorted assistants / volunteers. This is certainly a low number in relation to the number of people involved, but one can argue that there should have been zero cases, as these games were a mistake from the beginning.

See? Walking and chewing gum at the same time is in fact possible if you put a little effort into it.

10 ( +12 / -2 )

"far exceeded his expectations"

And

"I never had any doubt about the preparedness of Japan"

Are contradictory Mr Bach.

5 ( +7 / -2 )

Bach says Tokyo Olympics have 'far exceeded' his expectations

The games with zero spectators that have left the host nation in financial ruin, exactly coincided with an explosive Covid outbreak and given nothing in return?

I’ll be so glad when this jackass and his rip off circus is no longer Japan’s problem.

8 ( +11 / -3 )

I agree

Far away from a super spreader event.

Because you expected cases to suddenly increase overnight? that makes no sense.

In the real world the effects of something in the spreading are expected to become gradually evident several days after it, it is still too early to say this is the worse that happened.

6 ( +10 / -4 )

Superspreader event or not the plain fact of the matter is that the Olympics diverted attention and resources away from where they should have been and have undoubtedly caused damage to the Japanese people

6 ( +9 / -3 )

He either must be living in a different planet or he wrote this before the Olympics started. I’m sure most of us have a far different outlook on this than you, Uncle Bach. Thanks for the propaganda Bach, but we’re not stupid.

Can you name these athletes and their nationalities?

-4 ( +0 / -4 )

Personally, I was thinking that this Olympic Games would not be succeed, and it would be like Montreal 1976 where the host country didn't get even one gold medal in that games.

I understand those who made criticism regarding financial thing, but I think all host country had this same thing too and all depends on how Japan will deal with it and how the government will solve it.

plastic monkey: "I hate to tell you this, but the athletes didn’t do it for you. They did it for themselves."

Yeah, but wait until the Japanese gold medalists start their post-games media junket.

Producer, off camera: "OK, now we've been through this, but remember: this gold medal is for the People of Fukushima and the Children of Japan, got it? Any hint that it was for yourself and we'll have your sponsorships yanked so fast your head will spin"

Athlete: "Yes, sir!"

International Olympic Committee chief Thomas Bach is fully aware the reason these Tokyo 2020 Games, proceeded in the midst of a pandemic.

It certainly was not for the benefit of the people of japan, or the country health care system.

Not matter how much fork tongue spin Bach spouts.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

"The question that I really want to ask Bach and Suga. How many Japanese were turned away from hospitalization because beds and medical staff that were were solely allocated to the Olympics could not be used?"

Zero. Since, each team brought their own doctors and health care workers. Here is a good example:

Bach says Tokyo Olympics have 'far exceeded' his expectations

I'm sure he's referring to his luxury 5-star hotel.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

But the Olympic village held only 13.7% of the total people here for the Olympics…

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Bach, at best, is delusional. There he stands behind a podium, masked and spouting inanities & clichés. Spewing PR. Fully immunized, emergent from his luxury suite and all the amenities fit for a pasha. 'Exceeded his expectations'. What, they didn't run out of body bags?

Success. By what measure. Broadcast revenues into the coffers of the IOC?

These games, in no way benefitted the Japanese citizenry. For the most, the games have been ignored. The costs will be borne with no return on investment, none. Whatever the coincidence, SARSCoV-2 in Tokyo, went from 500 cases a day to 5,000 during the Olympics.

The Tokyo Olympics have fully exposed the corruption inherent in the IOC and the adverse impacts on any city that hosts the games, but it is especially clear in examining the Tokyo Olympics.

3 ( +5 / -2 )

Having personally visited a few Japanese city's including Tokyo in the 1980's/ 1990's not at all surprised that the Tokyo 2020 Olympic games is a roaring success against all the " COVID 19" pandemic odds. Will alwaysbe remembered as the " TOKYO 2020 TELIVISION OLYMPIC GAMES" in the history of the Olympics.

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

An excellent job done in difficult circumstances. Mr Bach and Mr Suga have been admirable in their hard work and determination to ensure a safe games

As others have mentioned, the Super Spreader Olympic variant does not occur as most of us knew.

The worlds media has been dominated with Olympic coverage and this has been a welcome distraction for all as well as the world deals with Covid and return to normality.

-6 ( +3 / -9 )

Tokyo Olympics have 'far exceeded' his expectations

Of Couse it has, Japan makes the difficult look easy. Exceeding expectations is second nature to Japan.

-4 ( +2 / -6 )

Less dead and fewer hospitalised than he expected, both from infection and from heat exhaustion. More income than expected from broadcasting the images. Enough volunteers working for free.

He's happy.

The tax-payers here will never know the true cost of these games, from the secretive payments to win the right to be the host country, the real cost of managing the games and ceremonies, and feeding and housing the thousands who comprise the Olympic family, to the construction, upgrading and future maintenance of facilities.

And infections continue to rise in the general population.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Mugging exceeded expectations, but that already happened when Ishihara made a hosting bid.

On the brighter side - Olympic did not become a super-spreader event, but only because athletes were

in a quasi-quarantine state.

The virus is politically smart, and it may hit after Olympics.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Exceeded expectations” of this preening “dodo” Bach and those LDPJOC “ostriches” with their heads in the sand but

NOT the expectations of the “Peacock” NBC Network and sports coverage abroad.

"Tokyo is the best-ever prepared Olympic city. "

How about those complaints from many athletes concerning the water quality for various boating events?

How about the complaints from quite a few athletes concerning their "quarters" at the velodrome?

And so on, and so on.

Hope you're including those who didn't want it here in the first place and those having to sacrifice the summer and tax to pay for this clown show.

More than a few on here wanted the Olympics stopped way before anyone ever heard of COVID. They then tried to use COVID as a reason to get it stopped with predictions of doom and gloom.

However it did happen despite all the challenges that would have meant defeat for most. Well done to the people of Japan for pulling off a great Olympics when many said it could not be done.

Only shame is the lack of fans due to a political decision (even though in parallel fans continued to attend sumo and baseball).

Looking forward to the Winter Olympics in Sapporo. The bid is a dead cert win.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

More than a few on here wanted the Olympics stopped way before anyone ever heard of COVID.

Many people didn’t want the Olympics before Covid hit.

It was way over budget before 2020. The money wasted was appalling. Gross mismanagement from a financial point of view.

Many people didn’t want the Olympics before Covid hit.

It was way over budget before 2020. The money wasted was appalling. Gross mismanagement from a financial point of view.

Many? Who are these 'many'? Sounds like an emotional reaction.

The fact is, the people who mattered made the decision to hold the Olympics, snd it is being held.

"I never had any doubt about the preparedness of Japan, the organizing committee and the Japanese people," Bach said at a press conference.

More than Japan being prepared, t he athletes were prepared to play under near before ten conditions.

Give credit to them.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

Bach: Tokyo Games have "far exceeded" his expectations with two days to go.

Here are the facts

Close to 500 athletes, volunteers and staff members Covid positive.

one athlete went missing

a group of athletes drink party outside

Uzbekistan has been arrested on suspicion of raping a woman at National stadium.

people are going out to watch the Olympics, which government told them to watch at home.

This does not far exceed the expectations. Bach is only trying to look good.

Bach is a big clown running a corrupt circus called the IOC. Perhaps he and his cronies should think about retiring soon.
