Oh lord, that’s another well thought out compromise. Off the rails but foot down let’s go!
Yubaru
Hell let's just go for broke here! Fill the stadium to capacity! Take away all restrictions!
Since the IOC and the Japanese government dont give a crap about the people of Japan, let them decide whether or not they want to be spectators.
(just in case there are people who take this comment seriously.... it's sarcasm!)
Zarathustra
Now it's time for the Japanese people to put their money where their mouths are and boycott the games. However, I still feel that despite all the anti-Olympic sentiment they will still get fans on seats.

“A panel of experts will decide whether to approve the new attendance cap later Wednesday.”
Experts at what? Prolonging the covid situation in Japan by being NOTHING but utterly useless yes men?
noriahojanen
Do they apply for all types of event gatherings, indoor or outside? Things must be very different.
At some stadiums for UEFA Euro 2020, attendance is controlled not merely by numerical cap but also by health status (negative test proof or vaccination). Should be taken into account.
ian
Around 1/7 capacity. Certainly better than 1/2 capacity but what's the basis?
rowiko68
Cap at 10,000. Regardless of size of venue???

Tokyo just reported 501 new cases, https://japantoday.com/category/national/Tokyo-reports-501-new-coronavirus-cases
Not a good idea to have any spectators, more sick people may result in future shut downs, and may hurt the economy more later on . . . .

I'd say this throws another wrench in the works, but there are so many wrenches there now that whatever remains of a plan is long gone

Oh, come on! Another panel of so called experts, another rounds of meetings, looking into things, taking things into consideration and so on? So what was the meaning of the previous meetings, considering things, etc.? They are just burning through the money like a shinkansen without brakes.
WilliB
Sensible compromise. Let visitors in, but avoid overcrowding. I am glad to see that the Japanese government retains some common sense and does not cave to hysterical Corona fearmongering.

Seems Japan has a real talent for inflating and deflating numbers.
According to some last week, IF ‘China allegedly CGI’d their miraculous Mars landing’
then, of course, Japan can easily triple with CGI the 10,000 to half fill a 68,000 capacity stadium.

@Reckless,
'Will I be a lucky one of those 10,000? I have no tickets yet...'
Of course not........unless you are one of the vaccinated regardless of age members of either Persona or Dentsu.
The plebs are simply not welcome except for their monthly tax payments,of course.
tooheysnew
i can’t believe that you still can’t believe.
It’s gonna happen, so get over it.

Yet another nonsensical number plucked out of thin air based on zero scientific reasoning.
JustAGoodOleBoy
" Existing guidelines allow a maximum of 5,000 people or 50 percent of a venue's capacity, whichever number is greater, until the end of this month." Is the limit the greater or smaller? Yesterday's JT article "Gov't considering quasi-state of emergency in Tokyo during Olympics" stated the opposite, "Until the end of this month, attendance at big events will be limited to a maximum of 5,000 people or 50 percent of a venue's capacity, whichever number is smaller."
Goodlucktoyou
Only takes one of the 10000 spectators to start a cluster.
if 1000 get the virus that is 1000 clusters.
Fuzzy
Is this the actual rule or is this sentence incorrect? Shouldn't it be whichever number is smaller? Let's say Venue A has a capacity of 20,000 and Venue B has a capacity of 5,000. According to the rule the way it's written here, Venue A would be allowed to have 10,000 people (50% of 20,000 = 10,000 5,000) and Venue B would be allowed to have 5,000 people (5000 50% of 5,000 = 2,500).
snowymountainhell
Agreed @6:32pm, seems like ‘fuzzy math’ to many here, too.
As observed earlier,
Fuzzy
The greater than symbols disappeared from my post.... Venue A would be allowed to have 10,000 people (50% of 20,000 = 10,000 and is greater than 5,000) and Venue B would be allowed to have 5,000 people (5000 is greater than 50% of 5,000 = 2,500).
Fuzzy
So the larger venue operates at 50% capacity, while the smaller venue can operate at full capacity.
Fuzzy
@snowymountainhell
Yep, the J-gov mathamagicians are at it again.
drlucifer
The cluster will take care of itself, the infected will take care of themselves.
The numbers have to stay smaller. Even the England variant didn't the Indian Variant
won't as well.

If social distance can be maintained, all are tested, and vaccinated, etc,
Then 10,000 might as well be 40,000. in for a yen in for a 1000 yen.

The mysterious panel of experts........Yoda, Gandalf, Mary Poppins
Tora
Just saw the news on this while having dinner and almost choked on my lump of meat when they announced yet another meeting with a panel of experts. This is appalling. It's like Suga doesn't know how to say anything else. It could almost be a tape recorder playing.
shogun36
I wonder what will be more difficult to obtain.
2 TIX to one of these 10,000 CAP olympic events or 2 vaccine shot appointments by the time OBON starts

Excerpt from JTimes:
itsonlyrocknroll
supercalifragilisticexpialidocious, along with a spoon full of sugar helps the vaccine do down.
These panels? Why?
The IOC has decided these game will happen not matter what.
Drive the vaccine, fill out the stadia, fill one seat, the next seat leave empty. jab them all as the rotate around the turnstiles.
The J tax payer has been shived, well and truly, so much so they can barely crawl, let alone walk .......
snowymountainhell
Interesting numbers @Fuzzy 6:48pm:
Discussing these kinds of issues with @blvtzpk today disclosed many subtle, yet significant issues: will not accept combination of symbols, auto-correct changes, etc. - hmmmm?
Oxycodin
This10k limits on spectators is for profit and nothing more. You be an idiot to go to covid lypics and supporting the virus to spread…..
kaimycahl
Looks like Japans government is participating in the Olympic games in the "steeple Chase event!!
TARA TAN KITAOKA
This Olympics will become a huge problem for all. Japanese government and I.I.O.C must be held responsible for their capitalist decisions.
Thomas Tank
So.... what about people who have already purchased tickets? Are the buybacks forced??
Thomas Tank
It's a good thing they colored the seats in random colors and patterns. It will be harder to see there are so few people!
Thomas Tank
Is that 10,000 total? Per venue? (some only support a few thousand) Article needs more information, but it's likely the IOC / JOC has simply not provided information.
ZENJI
Let the Super Spreader Games Begin.
Tokyoite
That is exactly how it is going to play out.
"Yes of course you can come.
What no vaccine yet?
Such a shame you don't work for one of those large companies that have been giving the vaccine.
Sorry....."
Tokyoite
The Olympic stadium which holds 80,000 will have 10,000.
starpunk
Gotta suck in all that monet from all the expenses. If this were held off until next year things would be a windfall for Suga, Tokyo, IOC - but nooooooooooooooooooo.......
Everything has to go on now now now now NOW! Play now, pay with your health and maybe your life later.
PM Suga is stepping on thin ice here. Let's see how things look for him when he's up for re-election.
