Nanimowakarimasen anymore.

As a result of Tuesday's decision, over 600 runners will not be able to run on public roads. They are instead set to participate in a flame lighting ceremony at the final destination of each day.

So wait!

If I got this straight, before 600 were going to run or take turns running in the open air.

Now they are going to pack all 600 around a single location to participate in a lighting ceremony.!

Both sound like bad ideas during an SOE but the present event idea sounds even worse than the original plan!

... Tokyo official said. "It is important to connect the flame, and we would like to have the event finish with smiles on people's faces.

Asinine platitudes like this remind one of the kind of nonsense officials said towards the end of the Pacific War.

J-elites care not one whit for the people.

Oh dear, saccharine smiles don’t really cut it in these pandemic days. Makes me want to puke when I read drivel like this which is probably not the intended reaction.

It has been held off the road a number of times already, both in closed areas and in a stadium only, as locals have objected to it. Yesterday, in Kanagawa, there was the ridiculuous sight of all the 'relay runners'on a stage, passing the flame to each other (torch kiss), each one sitting nearby waiting for their turn holding an Olympic torch. (One each - 50 or more on display - how much did they costs? Are they souvenirs?) .Then a big hoo-ha, as the final runner, a JAXA research nearly singed his eyebrows lighting the big bowl.

This car wreck is getting more and more amusing as we go on.

These jokers are the best comedians Japan has produced in decades.

Give us more Funny Japan!!!

so is this just a Tōkyō segment of the relay? because it's been going on for weeks, all over Japan, on and off public thoroughfares. if so, doesn't seem likely that whatever follows the first 8 days is going to be any different.... in any case, it seems all the runners will do is congregate at the destination-point of each leg, and witness the passing on of the flame? if so.... weird and tacky. seems to me that the 5-ringed-circus is sinking further and further into farce, and make-believe.....

Olympic torch relay to be taken off Tokyo's public roads for first 8 days

Does this mean they will just run inside a gymnasium for 8 days?

Well if the JOC don’t determine the policy who will?, the government aren’t up to the task. Hell a scout group has more of an idea then what we have now.

Well I guess no-one gives a damn. I'm in UK at the moment - zero build up to the Olympics. Complete disrespect to the majority of the Japanese public who think these games should not go ahead. Corporate cash rules.

"The situation of infections is very bad. If this continues, (the quasi-state of emergency) will remain beyond July 12," said an official at the organizing committee of the Olympics and Paralympics.

So now the JOC are determining our pandemic policy?!

Brought to you by Coca Cola and Toyota, their massive financial investment being the only reason this farce hasn't been cancelled.

That’s Toyota, as in “we donate to anyone, even if they refuse to recognize the results of a legitimate election” Toyota, yes?

Their PR team are going to be working triple overtime at this rate.

(Hope this isn’t deemed off-topic; I saw a connection, hence the comment).

Won’t make a difference. The only - the only - thing that matters to the people who hold the whip hand is how much money they can make from these games. The games could end up being a total PR disaster for Japan (I’d say we were halfway there already) and the eyes of the IOC people would just be glued to the TV ratings.

I’d love it if this had some major repercussions at the next general election, but history suggests this is unlikely.

80% really wanted a more abbreviated headline:

Olympic to be taken off Tokyo

"It is important to connect the flame, and we would like to have the event finish with smiles on people's faces."

I agree. Or maybe they could just quasi-smile. Good luck Olympic Tokyo.

Currently, the government's policy for areas under the quasi-state of emergency only allows a maximum of 5,000 people at sports and other large events.

Will Covid virus Delta variant really care about that maximum number of people? As long it can find a way to infect other healthy people with close proximity it will.

Another example of burying your head in the sand & hoping that with time the problem will ho away - not this time….

with increased foot traffic already prevalent in Tokyo plus foriegners expected to enter in Jul month would expect the numbers to only go up from where they are today!!!
