Fighto!
How about reducing it to ZERO and cancelling the whole debacle?
The majority of Japanese public have had a gutful of this sick, super-spreading circus.
nonu6976
They might as well have the ceremony in a school hall.
anon99999
I hope the names of these most privileged in the world 1000 VIPs will be released.
Who gets to choose this blessed 1000?
Particularly how many Japanese politicians and business leaders and their families will be among them?
Kobe White Bar Owner
Still 1000 too many!
YeahRight
No one with an ounce of dignity should attend anything to do with the Olympics.
Nobnaga
vips ??? lol
PerformingMonkey
Virus infected persons.
Anyway, I can't imaging sitting in a near-empty stadium will be much fun.
Perhaps they can populate the seats with androids and pipe in some crowd noise for ambience.
didou
Way too many. I should not be anyone from overseas.
Tokyo-Engr
That is "fewer than 1,000" too many
Jim
Are we normal residents supposed to feel grateful and thank these jokers for this news to contain the VIPs - is it not done mainly to reduce the public blow back where residents are banned but VIPs are allowed???
Bjorn Tomention
WHY ARE ANY COMING ?
Should be NONE !
Bjorn Tomention
Bidens wife plus 999 more ?
huh why ?
Bjorn Tomention
May their names all be printed in the roll of dishonor !!
wanderlust
What the criteria for attending?
How much gold, silver or bitcoin deposits they have made into the banks of the Lords of the Rings?
Some dude
The Tv camera operators are going to be working overtime to project the image of a full stadium. Maybe time for a bit of CG magic.
Yukijin
New SOE rules for the rich.
Group sizes capped at 1000 to stop the spread.
InspectorGadget
Why do they need to be there at all?
They're not organising, or assisting in any way. They are simply there as spectators/spreaders.
AManInJapan
I echo others.. the idea of "VIP" attending is sickening.
What is a VIP and what makes them important? Did their company pay lots of money to sponsor this? Are they buddies of Bach & Suga?
michaelqtodd
They have already announced that they will broadcast fake applause and cheering into venues.
Is Krygios the Australian tennis player still the only athlete to withdraw because the whole thing "is not right"? Nobody else has any dignity or empathy?

V.I.P. "Very Irresponsible Person"
shogun36
and fewer than 1,000 people care.
put them all in one room at the stadium, let them mingle, do whatever.
whatever consequence happens as a result, happens.
It will be fun to see what becomes of all of this garbage.
yoshichuta@icloud.com
Too many people gathering at once in a ugly small stadium . Making a virus infectious cluster easily a must !!
Debarring the spectators who’s got the expensive tickets , only relatives canned space pushes up in there enjoy?
coskuri
Among them, there are probably 5 or 6 TIPs (truely important people) that have been pressured to attend. Instead of doing their important jobs, they'll be asked to entertain Suga and Mrs Biden.
No. Many won't participate. Wait and see the numbers in the results every day of competition.
But don't blame the athletes. Most can't afford refusing a big competition. Even if they find an acceptable excuse, they can't communicate much individually (that'd make 2 lines in a local media at best). The small sports totally depend on country sponsored training and competitions.
Athletes would be punished by their local leagues, maybe got their career and study scholarship terminated... for no effect as they'd be replaced in 2 seconds by the next on the list.
It's easier for Kyrgios, Alaphilippe...They are stars like Sandra Bullock that chooses between 15 roles. Their sports are businesses, they sell crap for big sponsors and for them the Olympics are like charity event they may or may not include in their busy schedule.
The lack of courage is from the politicians. They were the ones there to plan the games (including bribes to get them).
Jtsnose
Even with fewer attendees, it is probably still important to well sanitize the different venues . . . .
smithinjapan
That's still hundreds more than the ZERO allowed by the government's "No Spectator Policy", and even high up the ladder, the NO Foreign Spectator Policy established going out the gate. Are these people all immune?
Bob Fosse
Double that number then it’ll be closer to reality. Just like the Olympic budget.
yoshichuta@icloud.com
Even fewer attendees , the number too many ! Only one person better !
Only Bach watching in the venue fully enough !!
Bjorn Tomention
Very Infected people.
Virus insane People.
Very irresponsible people.
Very irrelevant people.
Very idiotic people..............

Exactly,
How long before comments are disabled in this thread too,
Too frequent recently. Has it got something to do with the olympics,
Antiquesaving
Poignant!
At the G7 the news made a big deal about all of them supporting going ahead with the Olympics but not one leader other than Macron dates come.
G7 leader:
"Sure we will send our teams"
"Come to Tokyo, are you crazy?"
Only a fool would come here at this time, especially if they are one of the ultimate fools not vaccinated.
Joseph
This is a quote from Yokyoite worth re-posting:
The problem I think is that the continual blaming of the Olympics, which has not even started, draws away attention from the real causes.
The selective fear mongering on the Olympics, while we still pack into trains everyday shows how flawed the argument is.
I mean, unless you really do believe millions packed onto trains is safer than 5,000 people sat spaced outside in a 80,000 capacity stadium.
Tokyoite
I bet they're glad you've elected yourself as their spokesperson.
Mind you, does not explain the huge demand for tickets that were many times over subscribed.
Tokyoite
Why not give tickets to health workers as they did for the 2021 Super Bowl?
Tokyoite
Just wondering, those that hate the Olympics.
Do you plan to complain and protest against the disabled athletes at the Paralympics ?
The vast majority of Paralympians do not get paid, and for many sport has turned their lives around.
