time to start calling China “Taiwanese China” and describing it as a rogue state off the coast of Taiwan.

Yes, "should"...But it won't. Because the IOC is as corrupt as it is devoid of any principle beyond promoting its dishonorable game.

About 9 years ago, the Tokyo International Film Festival had a program that was going to be called "Contemporary from from Taiwan" or something like that. China pressured the organizers to change it to "Chinese Taipei." Since film festivals are supposed to champion expression, I thought they would refuse but they caved in.

The pretense, that Taiwan, is China, was and is ludicrous. Its present state, as a corporate outpost, think Foxconn or Han Hai, which assembles and manufactures for Apple and others, in mainland China, ignores a very apparent reality that is lost in geopolitical supposed realpolitik.

China, the emergent world power, the beneficiary of largesse from USA corporations and companies, is best understood for what it is, not some cardboard construct by ideologues and crackers in the USA.

As for Taiwan, as is said, what's in a name? Cleveland Indians or Cleveland Guardians - to put it simply.

Xi says that if even One Japanese soldier goes to aid Taiwan China will Nuke Japan...and you wonder why there is no flag and no national anthem for a Taiwanese God Medal Winner?

Face it. Since Beijing Olympics China now owns the IOC - The IOC members are shaking in their boots and do whatever China pays them to do.

The world isnt intersted in the Olympics...The world is more interested in Self Euthanizing with China's Covid Vaccines

The US stabbed Taiwan in the back playing geopolitics against Russia back in the early 70’s. It’s long past time for America to make amends by giving Taiwan full diplomatic legitimacy and tell the CCP to stuff it.

The IOC should change the rules and live through the mainland CCP-Chinese govt's tantrum. Then it will all go away and the world will call Taiwan, "Taiwan".

These report must live another planet, The OCI is owned. Any decision the IOC make has to be run through headquarters Beijing first.

Despite being a self-ruled democracy of 23 million people with its own borders, currency and government, Taiwan's status remains disputed.

Bull feces. It has been a sovereign nation for decades. Everybody needs to stop kissing China's butt.

On the plus side, it's great that dictatorships are so thin-skinned and petty that you can annoy them by uttering a single word. Any regime riled by terms and symbols must be really insecure. Hungary and rainbows etc.

Taiwan's problem is that too many will roll over when China tell them to, and they can easily get excluded (UN, WHO, IOC etc). The US are happy to use Taiwan as a political weapon, but don't actually step in much.

Kuo Hsing-chun is a stellar sportswoman - one of a select group that dominate their field. The rest of the competitors did their thing, and then she stepped out and took the gold with her first lift.

You might be surprised to find that some GB athletes have been blocked from performing in the Olympics by comparable idiocy.

There is no GB men's football team in the Games, because the regional FAs (England, Wales, Scotland and NI) couldn't come to terms. The same thing happened in Rio. The pathetic inadequates are so scared of losing control to a unified body, that they effectively block participation. The women's FAs, in contrast, just sorted it and are taking part. I think state TV here (the BBC) are avoiding the men's football because of this.

By the way the right way of describing Palestine is not ‘disputed’ or ‘unrecognized’ but occupied.

I really wish West Taiwan would stop telling the Republic of China what to call itself.

I went to Taiwan a few years ago. Lovely place and the people were charming. A lot of them spoke excellent Japanese too.

Feel sorry for them being caught up in this pathetic posturing on the part of mainland China.

Beijing boycotted those games and quit the International Olympic Committee two years later.

If only history would repeat

Why do people think this is a new thing?

It’s been the case for decades now.

Now is the time for Taiwan to step up and out from under China's thumb. And the IOC along with the entire world needs to support Taiwan.

12 ( +13 / -1 )

I only recognize Taiwan as the real government not the ccp

Because the Olympics is clearly a non-political organization which focuses only on bringing people together in a spirit of brotherhood through the holy power of sport.

Thank you, I’ll be here all week.

Because China.

7 ( +10 / -3 )

Reason enough to boycott the entire olympics really, if one thinks about it. The IOC is very obviously in China's pocket.

Right now is the perfect time to claim Taiwan name, it's now or never.
