Oh, I see, don't want the numbers to look bad for the LDP in the fall election eh?
Mat
I challenge anyone to look back at the 2020/21 olympics in a few years time and think "yeah, totally worth it".

Although the official cost has been listed as $15.4 billion, several government audits have shown costs may be much higher.
This has been reported since early last year. Still have not heard why a government audit would not be "official". Could time be being taken to make the costs as obscure as possible? Or time the announcement with one of a tax hike? Given the Tokyo Games track record, I would say both.

there's zero incentive to be accurate and news won't be allowed to investigate it. Real data will take years

they haven't been keeping a running total? (⌒▽⌒)
YeahRight
Unofficial cost: Way too much.

Cue the people whinging about ‘my tax money’ & ‘me & my kids will be in debt for years’

The cost should not be about money. The cost should be about lives lost to Covid because the doctors, nurses and other medical staff that were yanked for the Olympics.

They need to wait a little because if they announce it right after an election, the winner will suffer the ire of the people (who will, of course, do nothing anyway). Wait a little longer and they can successfully deflect after the person is entrenched, and easily blame Suga.

Basically trying to cover up any cost that can be hidden to make the amount look "acceptable".

Paper shredding, file deletion, and creative accounting to get to the desired number.
Toshiba accountants and auditors may have a new job!

Well....that actually was our tax money and....well, yes, my kids and I as taxpayers will be paying the cost of this for years to come.
You seem to be implying this is a good thing that we shouldn't be complaining about for some reason.
Samit Basu
I predict $40 billion. All on tax payer's dime.

Typical. No one's in charge here. It's always someone else. The health minister in charge of health? No, it's someone else. The CEO of the Tokyo Olympic organizing committee in charge of the Tokyo Olympic organizing committee? Someone else.
Then who's responsible? And what powers does/had the CEO of the Tokyo Olympic organizing committee then? How much did he get paid for it? And everyone is always looking into something.
Don't they have a ledger, ongoing statistics, ongoing accounting? So they don't keep track of how much money they spend/spent, to whom, when, for what? Is this a joke?
As @factchecker said
Exactly.

That’s you, Muto.
You’re the one “in charge.”
So you’re saying, you’re not ready with the Indo because you’re looking into it?
You’re gonna take at least 3 months to find out that the Olympics took in NO INCOME, yet spent a lot to feed and house the athletes and build infrastructure?
It’s pretty obvious, it’s gonna go over the $15B budget.
The only question that’s a mystery is, how much did you pocket out of all of this?
prionking
Like any official figures anywhere, they're to be take with a fistful of salt.

“Can this all wait until after the elections?” - Perhaps another 6 months or so to “doctor” the books to aid/hurt the party the will remain/be in power at the time?
collegepark30349
Takes that long to cook the books, I guess.

Yeah, you can Sit bach down. The damage- Looting, IS Done Padre..
it's all just picking up the tab now. If the people had a say things would be different.
But you don't pay your way do you so what do you care?
What's it to ya what taxpayers have to say about it now?
Jim
The most expensive and the most pathetic Olympics ever! Budget of $15.4 billion is simply way too much! $4.5 billion budgeted for Paris Olympics, $6 billion for LA and only $2 billion budget for Brisbane 2032! In reality, Japan definitely spent more than $15.4 billion as NHK and other sources have reported that it’s more than $24 billion!
Aly Rustom
wanna pick up the tab??
Sven Asai
Those games, welfare, pension, defense response to China NK etc , education for new sellable technologies, digitalization, economy change for ecology… quite a list of past and future costs to stem. Let’s again print much more money… And the usual complain that would have to shoulder a future generation, well, at those birth rates even that doesn’t grip here. lol
Blacklabel
as will the amount of our tax increase to pay for it.
for something that none of us even got to attend.
Pukey2
I'm not interested in the official figures. I want the real figures.
If the Covid numbers in Japan are anything to go by, real figures will be 10x.
Mr Kipling
Next year.... long after the election.
