1.7 trillion yen, which is 2.3 times greater than the planned 734 billion yen submitted to the International Olympic Committee in 2013 at the time of Japan's bid.
Or 3.6 trillion yen, which is 4.9 times greater.
Our Japanese government continues to demonstrate an inability to provide accurate estimates, or an exceptional ability to deceive its people.

Has everybody noticed that Koike is still hiding because all these scandals about the Tokyo Olympics is still in the press?
Inaka Life
It was 1 trillion yen more expensive than the initial estimate? That’s $7500000000 USD over the initial cost (7.5 BILLION USD!). That is an extravagant waste of money, even for the LDP. Social programs are going bankrupt, taxes are going up, and the LDP spent a total of nearly 13 billion dollars on the Olympics. Unbelievable!

Love how they snooker stories like this away until late in the year when people aren't paying as much attention.
Good
Hopefully Japan can get the Olympics again to prove this story wrong
sakurasuki
Is that matter to government?
No, as long they keep being elected and can raise taxes as they like, Japanese household who will really pay for it.
Seigi
Including the bribes and corruptions???
dan
Disgusting.
But the Japanese keep voting for these inept corrupt old fools!
Laguna
Oh, yeah - the Olympic stadium. Easy to forget that.
Nihon Tora
The pictograms performance made it all worth it!

This is only for the money that has been discovered and thus been audited, and not the hidden unaccounted money. You can bet that there is much more money involved, but is buried deep, with files and documents shredded, and paper trials hidden.

Bigtime - Shiny gold plated criminal LOOTING of Public money.
Gold medals to all these Record breakers and toss in another 80 more years!!
( spread around some wives, families and friends, recruit suits and stowed away in a buncha faraway places)
All votes paid for, collected by the moon church! All the volunteers with the free hats… Whatta scam.
I gotta say thumbs up to em. Billions. They pulled it off.
Candy from a baby. Ripping off the nation takes big cojones!
Again, Yeah, much as I hate to admit it, thats a seriously Bad_ss robbery …even for these Looters.

I hope you are paying attention, Sapporo.

Sapporo is smart for announcing that they're not going to rally support for the Games there.

And why are the prosecutors not filing charges for fraud or misconduct?
shogun36
How can they?
They can't remember how much money they actually used for the event, how much they "say" they used and how much they ACTUALLY used to line their own greedy pockets with.
Outside of Rain Man, no one can keep track of that much embezzled funds going out to that many white collar thieves they call "politicians and executives" all at the same time.
Make it easier. Just delete the whole lot of them.
Start with the main suspects, Koike, Suga, and Aso. Then work their way down to the underlings.

Accounting! not a strength in Japan. Accountability not even a smidgen of understanding of that one.
Nemo
Part of me says we should be grateful that’s all it was.

Surprise surprise SURPRISE!!!

What about the lost Japanese lives due to letting thousands of unvaccinated athletes and thousands of staff and tourist into the country during the games. Right after the games another wave of deaths hit Japan due to COVID and Koike then and only then said hey this COVID is serious. Add another billion or so US in losses due to illness and deaths. The whole event was corrupt to the core from the bribery to win the games to how Dentsu managed the games. Will go down as one of the worse mistakes in modern Japan history.
falseflagsteve
Terrible overspending and a disgrace. No doubt Mr Bach is furious, he demands value for money and governments spend their money helping out people in need, not lining the pockets of the already wealthy

"Officials there this week announced they would stop holding promotional events for the bid and now hold a nationwide poll to gauge support."
Until it is clear that they don't have the support. Then they will hold promotional events and go forward with the bid anyway, saying that they will get cooperation and understanding from the people over time. They'll say as the only nation to have suffered nuclear attacks, Hokkaido should get it. They'll say as the nation that suffered massive natural disasters like 3/11, it is a chance for Japan to prove that is can rebuild. They'll say it'll be the most compact winter games ever, then once the bid is secured they'll start talking about moving events to Nagano and other parts of Japan to "save money" when it's revealed costs are double what they promised in the bid. Then they'll suggest new facilities be built in Nagano instead of using the ones currently available. Then they'll say they shouldn't have done that, but it's too late. Then they'll say construction costs are set to triple because no one could have foreseen whatever the excuse of the day is. Then the human rights abuses with labor trafficking and working conditions will come to light and they'll say, "Well, it's better than Rio!" after denying it for a while first, and of course they'll "take it seriously and look into it". Then the questions about why the government has to increase taxes while wining and dining the IOC comes to light and they'll deny it. Then when that is proven they'll say it will all pay itself off with ticket sales, which will have gone up five times the normal rate. Then the bribery scandals will start to come to light, and they'll deny it until the current politicians have resigned, then blame it on them. Then when all is said and done and it costs triple to five times what the initial statements were, the government of Hokkaido will declare it a success, and ask all of Japan to share in the massive debt it has incurred by holding the Games, and asking for the understanding of the people of Hokkaido as they slash social welfare funding and increase domestic taxes. And of course, the new facilities they build which they claimed would herald in a new era of sports in Hokkaido and Japan and would be used for concerts and events will sit empty as no one wants to rent them at 10 times the normal cost of venues, but that of course we'll have to pay the upkeep for for a few decades before they are torn down to build new ones after the next bid.
