It's not their money so sure why not just take more cash from the hard working people of Japan, many of whom now really don't want the Olympics to happen in 2021.

Now it's just getting ridiculous. So the budget was 13 billion yen for the ceremonies, which is bad enough. Now they're upping it to 16.5 billion, a 26% increase, after already upping it 43% previously. And trying to use COVID as an excuse.

Why not just own up to it? The JOC is being run by a bunch of corrupt cleptocrats who know they've got their noses firmly in the money trough, and are using any and all excuses to try and snort up a little bit more of the public's money in order to line their own pockets.

Dishonorable bunch of (words that would get this post deleted).

What a boondoggle. Good money after bad.

More money and more and more, when does it stop!!!

At this point and with so many people struggling this is just a huge slap in the face to the Japanese people and of course us residents of Japan as well.

I was at a factory yesterday working with a client. As a supplier I really have never heard clients talking about these types of issues while working however somehow the conversation got around to what a crappy year 2000 is, then the virus, then the government response/Go To Travel, and the Olympics. One guy got going and these guys kind of opened up. Listening to them, in laws, and other folks I know it seems the distrust in the government by the average Japanese is at a level I have not seen before (even after 3/11). I think there is a huge level of dissent in Japan and the people either feel powerless to do anything about it or just do not know what to do.

Of course, sink more money into that garbare event that gets paid by the people that don't even want it.

The Tokyo Games organizing committee is planning to increase the budget for the opening and closing ceremonies of the postponed Olympics and Paralympics to 16.5 billion yen ($159.7 million), sources close to the games revealed Monday.

Organizers have decided to raise the budget by an additional 3.5 billion yen due to the influence of the games' one-year postponement over the coronavirus pandemic, the sources said. The increase will be discussed at a board meeting on Tuesday.

Any representatives from the public allowed at the meeting? Thought not. If there were they might asked for the money to be better spent on direct cornavirus relief funds.

All I keep hearing about with the Olympics are ballooning costs for an Olympics the people don't want but Japan and the IOC keep pushing for. They really refuse to quit and just keep throwing money at it.

18 ( +18 / -0 )

Why bother cos it ain’t gonna happen!

12 ( +12 / -0 )

Any business project manager that had the cost over run these games are producing would be fired and the project would be shut down. It's really bad for us taxpayers that the government has the wrong MBA, Masters of Bungled Administration.

Waste of money. These ceremonies will be super spreader events anyway.

11 ( +12 / -1 )

There aren't going to be any Olympics. There isn't going to be an opening ceremony. There aren't going to be any refunds. Where will the money go?

17 ( +17 / -0 )

There are many real reasons for these, non good. First Dentsu and the international tv stations make a killing on the adds around these 2 events. Best action from the public is not to watch them so the next Olympics the budgets will go down. Second Dentsu also makes money on the organisation of the ceremonies.

Then, to make it acceptable to the public, in the initial drafts these event budgets are underreported and in normal times the budget adjustments pass without to much comments.

further more with so many local sponsors Dentsu needs bigger ceremonies to have enough add time on tv. While no branding is allowed during the games it iss allowed around tv programming.

finally, the IOC can easily stop this by setting an upper cost limit for the ceremonies but doesn’t for the same reasons.

In normal times I found this disgusting waste, now, it is just unacceptably disrespectful to all people

If it happens, will they make double of it? Or gets down into the debt?

I wonder what most athletes/players think of the Olympics and the situation, after years of training, they're still dreaming and hoping about the medals in front of the whole world.

For Organisers - Money

For Players - Medals

For Others - Motion ?

Hahaha. Are you so naive? C'mon, Tokyo 2020 OC is set up under the public structure. Public representatives are always in these meetings. The problem is all the constant outsourcing this country has in its processes. Welcome to the most expensive Olympic Games in history (and this number was before COVID).

If I were you I would start asking your government why they have signed a blank check, and why they don't stop wasting (now the correct term is wasting, as almost everything is ready) money... and, to stop corruption. This last item will be very important for the future in Japan.

FYI: I work in Tokyo 2020.

Give it a rest and let the Olympics go. Continuing to throw taxpayer money at this is such a terrible waste. This article should be in the Crime section. This Olympics has nothing to do with sports. It's just about money and saving face.

If this extra budget replaces AKB and some kids singing that god awful Paprika song, I fully support it.

My choice would be a Kusama Yayoi spectacular, set to the music of YMO!

If you're going to bankrupt the country, you may as well do it in style? But even that doesn't excuse this reckless behaviour as the cursed 'games' won't be happening anyway!

6 ( +6 / -0 )

Closing ceremony surly most if not all athletes have been bundled home by then?

The virus Olympics are not going to be a joyous event. Except for those that deem it so.

Without Olympics, Japanese government would not decide vaccine plan quickly enough. So, Olympics should work as a good deadline to decide any measures to the pandemic.

Several years ago, I remember someone saying "Japan hosting the Olympics is like hosting a house party with a plugged toilet" because of the Fukushima situation. Now, its going to feel like a plugged toilet and you've just lost your job.

Eyes down, round and round

Let's all sit and watch the money-go-round

Everyone take a little bit here and a little bit there

As all have already pointed out - unacceptable waste of funds better used for other needs!

But I guess they realize there will be actually No Olympics so they are concentrating on the ceremony :-)

As much as I am for holding the Olympics,

this I am against.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

completely backwards decision. Should cut cost and donate left over savings to covid relief. are you guys serious?!?!

5 ( +5 / -0 )

Especially in this situation, there is no need for the Tokyo Olympics at all.

Keep based on reality and watch what's going on in the modern world around them! Without the Olympics, the Japanese government will not settle fast enough on a vaccination programme. Therefore, the Olympics should serve as a good deadline to focus on any pandemic steps. If it would cost the sufferings of his own people, CCP will do anything to get the powers.

Sure sure. Take what you need. Do you guys need more, on top of that?

How about another $30 Billion for your travel expenses. Limo service to and from the hotel. Also don't forget to add another $50 Billion to cover the costs of the steak and lobster dinners for each meeting.

Please make sure this is the best Olympics EVER (that never actually happens.)

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Makes sense to me. The less people attending should warrant rasing the costs of advertisements and cleaning staff, and of course more meetings to discuss about the next few meetings.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

I guess with all things going on that is the right thing to do...wait...did they say "rise"!?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

what happened to the opening and closing ceremony budget that wasn't used this year?

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Raising the budget means they are already over budget!!! Expect every committee to raise their budget! The "Organizing Committee should be renamed the "Over budget committee"

What a kick in the shin / face / ruts. Pushing forward with the Olympics I get, but due to covid we going to spend more on the opening and closing ceremony? Just no share
